Communication infrastructure consists of the organizations, procedures, facilities, and networks used to transmit and receive information electronically. A well-established communication infrastructure provides many opportunities but also influences urban landscapes and most aspects of modern life. Founded in 1495, Santiago is the second largest city in the Dominican Republic, located in fertile lands important for farming and livestock. While telecommunications play an important role, Santiago still lacks reliable basic services like water and electricity. The SMART initiative aims to develop Santiago into a knowledge-based production center through education, projects, and marketing. Singapore has one of the most advanced telecom infrastructures in the world and a policy of establishing itself as a global innovation and knowledge center through organizations like IDA.
