Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia to Reverend Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams King. He attended college at a young age and earned a PhD in theology. He married Coretta Scott King in 1953 and they had four children together. King led the Montgomery Bus Boycott starting in 1955 and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to promote nonviolent protest of racial segregation and discrimination. He delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington in 1963. King was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee while supporting a sanitation workers' strike.

Thomas Alexander and Charlotte Parke Alexander were early pioneers in Westerville, Ohio. Thomas ran a foundry and barn where he hid and transported runaway slaves as part of the Underground Railroad. Their son John later served in the Civil War. Dr. Isaac Newton Custer was a Civil War veteran and dentist in Westerville who was devoted to patriotism. His daughter Dacia Custer Shoemaker worked to preserve the Benjamin Hanby House and wrote about his life. Joseph Caulker, a student from Sierra Leone, attended Otterbein University but died in an accident; however, he began a family legacy of relatives attending the school.
Amelia boynton robinson
Amelia Boynton Robinson was a leading civil rights activist born in 1911 in Georgia. She became involved in women's suffrage and was one of the few registered Black voters in Alabama in the 1930s. In the 1960s, Robinson helped lead the Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches, including Bloody Sunday in 1965 where she was beaten unconscious while protesting for Black voting rights. She continued advocating for civil rights and human rights throughout her life.

October 30, 1964
Seven teenagers, including three boys and four girls, were killed in a two-car collision late one Friday night near Rose Hill, Kansas. All seven victims were sophomores at three different Wichita high schools. A ninth victim, a senior at one of the schools, later died from injuries sustained in the crash, making it the worst fatal car accident in Kansas history with a total of nine lives lost.
