ENGLEWOOD CULTURAL ARTS CENTER

ENTRY LEVEL PLAN
The Englewood Cultural Arts Center had to be highly visible and easily
accessible. The intersection of the Santa Fe transportation corridor and
Highway 285 provides maximum metro-wide exposure and makes the
arts center convenient for both automobile and mass transit arrival. In
this location, the ECAC will be a “Billboard for the arts”. This exposure will
augment the aggressive promotion of the arts that is necessary to sustain
an art center’s fiscal success.
A new pedestrian bridge establishes a gateway marker and connects the
city of Englewood to the art center, park, and riverfront.
By connecting the city center to the South Platte River Greenway, the
ECAC becomes a catalyst for the development of a new art park provid-
ing sculpture gardens, performance areas, artist live work spaces and
other art related retail. It is hoped that special programs, festivals and
other recreational activities along the waterfront will reinforce the vitality
between the new art center and the local community.
The proposed design articulates the different functions and disciplines
within the center in to several clear forms and encourages diversity and
interconnection of the disciplines through the use of stairs, ramps, escala-
tors and other gathering spaces. The design also integrates artful expres-
sion and sustainability into all components and structures.
The largest of these forms is the theater complex (orange) with its innova-
tive multiple stages and turntable seating located above rehearsal spaces
and dressing rooms. The grey forms are multiple levels of classrooms
and dance studios; the purple form is two levels of dividable conference
and meeting spaces, and the blue form is the administration wing with
live-in artist lofts above. The termination of the administration spike de-
marcates the main entry.
The sphere located in the atrium is a café that would be accessible via
the bridge from the city and the park even when the center is closed; of
course while open it is accessible by all.
The 600 parking spaces provided below the center feature natural ventila-
tion and daylighting and serve a dual purpose as overflow parking for the
Englewood mass transit stops.

VICTOR VALLEY TRANSIT AUTHORITYh e s p e r i a c a l i f o r n i a
AERIAL PERSPECTIVE
The Victor Valley Transit Authority (VVTA) was looking for a Transit Campus de-
sign that was thought provoking and an icon for the California High Desert. The
answer was a four building campus that invokes movement and sustainability
generated through dynamic architectural forms. The campus includes a 26,000
square foot Administrative and Operations building, 36,000 square foot Mainte-
nance Facility, a Fuel/Fare/Wash facility, a Public CNG fueling facility, as well as
covered and uncovered storage for 254 buses. Relationships between all of the
buildings were created through the use of color, form, and materials – keeping all
the buildings strongly connected. LEED Gold certification will be realized through
the use of many different sustainable design elements such as daylighting, build-
ing orientation, the use of optimized overhangs and louvers, a Photovoltaic bus
canopy for on site renewable energy, a transpired solar collection wall, innova-
tive wastewater technologies including water efficient landscaping, recycled and
regional materials and several other sustainable strategies. The budget for VVTA
is $44 million and it is scheduled to begin construction
in February of 2008.

THIRD LEVEL PLAN
The new Sunset Maintenance Facility for the Regional Transportation Com-
mission (RTC) of southern Nevada is a highly visible civic project in southern
Las Vegas. Design emphasis has been placed on creating a functional, co-
hesive and attractive campus that encourages a strong visual connection to
public transportation.
The employee and visitor entries have been developed along view corridors,
creating unexpected and secure visual connections to the bus service yard.
To further emphasize RTC’s main public front the visitor parking is also rotated
to align with this view corridor.
With the ability to be isolated for after hours events this centrally located lobby
also contains the training areas, which will eventually be shared by the ad-
ministration and operations departments of both fixed route and bus rapid
transit.
The extra volume generated by the use of sloped roofs has been utilized uni-
versally to create mezzanines which conceal the mechanical equipment. The
sloped roofs, similar forms, materials and colors, create a consistent language
between the various buildings reinforcing the campus concept.

SITE PLAN
The new Emil “Lucky” Reznik Center to be located
in the new Studebaker redevelopment will provide
Transpo with a much needed state of the art main-
tenance and operations facility. The initial project
includes an administration and operations wing,
a high tech maintenance facility, and an enclosed
bus storage area for a seventy six bus fleet with
fuel, fare and wash functions.
The design is functional, iconographic and environ-
mentally friendly, addressing the requirements of
operating with efficiency, durability, and safety, and
with a sense of pride and civic duty. The Transpo
building and landscape will be holistically unified
by scale, forms, materials, textures, articulation
and design concept to create a dynamic aesthetic,
and functionally superior facility that is of its place
and time.
The new Transpo facility carries the lofty goal of be-
coming the first transportation facility in the country
(possibly the world) to attain the prestigious LEED
Platinum certification. This program begins with op-
timal building orientation which assists with passive
solar gain, snow melt and controlled daylighting of
the facility. Building materials, which are integral to
the success of this project, are economically effi-
cient, functional, durable, beautiful, sourced locally,
and efficiently used. The integration of site and
building design will reduce operational expenses
and aid in reducing the dependence on foreign
energy sources while aiming to reduce waste by
implementing a recycling system for all areas of the
building.

Two seemingly disparate or contradictory ideas,
serenity and excitement fuse together to create a

tech industrial imagery of the Union Pacific Rail-
road with the contradictory notion of serine and
peaceful parks.

AL GAHDEER MASTER PLAN
a b u d h a b i U A E
Urban Design Concept Statement
With an expected rate of 80% ex-patriot occupancy at Al Ghadeer there is a need to
educate the population to the rich cultural history of the region and at the same time
provide the modern appointments that are expected. It is anticipated that the layering
of these multi-national cultures within the district will add to the richness of the cultural
experience.
Historic patterns and textures will be used in both common and uncommon ways as
a consistent thread to stitch the urban context together reinforced with consistent
landscaping and urban design features.
Contemporary tensile fabric structures will be featured in prominent public spaces to
Provide shade and gathering places as a constant reminder of the regions culture.
Occupants can wonder safely through the whole site via pedestrian parkways that link
the neighborhoods with parks, amenities and the centrally located District Center and
park. These parkways will allow for interaction, education and cultural experience.
Major arteries are crossed either on grade at signalled intersections or beneath with
pedestrian underpasses. The civic open space at the District Center crosses over the
Central beltway with an iconic bridge leading to Lake Center Park and eventually back
into the neighborhoods via the regional pedestrian parkways.
The park systems and Lake Central park in particular have been conceived to host a
multiplicity of activities for all ages from educational and interpretive parks, to active
play spaces and contemplation parks meant to reinforce ones spiritual needs.
Through the layering of these numerous concepts, Al Ghadeer will be a wonderfully
rich and dynamic district that appeals to its occupants intellectual, physical, social and
spiritual needs while promoting an easy, healthy and sustainable way of living.

ENTRY LEVEL PLAN
The Boulder Jewish Community Center embodies the diversity of
the religion as a celebration of the positive elements of the Jew-
ish faith and history, it would be too easy to pick up on the shards
and destructive influence of their history - plus it has already been
done.
Jewish faith is very strongly based on the idea of Jews as “a na-
tion” or as a family (“children of Israel”) sharing a common history,
destiny and connection. “Galut” refers to Jews living outside of
Israel and translates to exile, captivity or dispersion. Despite the
diversity of beliefs the relationship to the community (at all levels)
is of utmost importance. Cross cultural adaptation is common in
the Jewish faith where foreign cultural elements have been incor-
porated into the Jewish mainstream beliefs. Evidence of this can
be found in several key areas of their culture – language, music
and religion:
The entry sequence here is a metaphor for the events from the
story of Exodus; forty years of wandering in the desert led by Mo-
ses who eventually provides food, water and knowledge for the 13
tribes who are represented in this scheme by the thirteen flowering
fruit trees on the entry axis .
At the entrance point to the entry courtyard the library form is more
prominent as Jews consider education brings one closer to God.
This idea is reinforced as it is also a tall space with strong vertical
thrust. The library form is also a metaphor for Moses going “in” to
the mountain to retrieve the commandments (knowledge).
With elevation comes proximity to God, also Jerusalem is sited on
top of a hill. The final stage to the entry sequence is the entry to the
lobby which is up several steps also adding civic importance.
Sokkat is a festival or holiday to celebrate the feeding of the jews in
the desert during exodus. Part of the ritual includes building a per-
gola/shading element which is represented by the shade canopy
around the main lobby space shading the main entry and amphi-
theater courtyards.

  • 9. ENGLEWOOD CULTURAL ARTS CENTER e n g l e w o o d c o l o r a d o
  • 10. TYPICAL PARKING LEVEL SECOND LEVEL PLAN ENTRY LEVEL PLAN The Englewood Cultural Arts Center had to be highly visible and easily accessible. The intersection of the Santa Fe transportation corridor and Highway 285 provides maximum metro-wide exposure and makes the arts center convenient for both automobile and mass transit arrival. In this location, the ECAC will be a “Billboard for the arts”. This exposure will augment the aggressive promotion of the arts that is necessary to sustain an art center’s fiscal success. A new pedestrian bridge establishes a gateway marker and connects the city of Englewood to the art center, park, and riverfront. By connecting the city center to the South Platte River Greenway, the ECAC becomes a catalyst for the development of a new art park provid- ing sculpture gardens, performance areas, artist live work spaces and other art related retail. It is hoped that special programs, festivals and other recreational activities along the waterfront will reinforce the vitality between the new art center and the local community. The proposed design articulates the different functions and disciplines within the center in to several clear forms and encourages diversity and interconnection of the disciplines through the use of stairs, ramps, escala- tors and other gathering spaces. The design also integrates artful expres- sion and sustainability into all components and structures. The largest of these forms is the theater complex (orange) with its innova- tive multiple stages and turntable seating located above rehearsal spaces and dressing rooms. The grey forms are multiple levels of classrooms and dance studios; the purple form is two levels of dividable conference and meeting spaces, and the blue form is the administration wing with live-in artist lofts above. The termination of the administration spike de- marcates the main entry. The sphere located in the atrium is a café that would be accessible via the bridge from the city and the park even when the center is closed; of course while open it is accessible by all. The 600 parking spaces provided below the center feature natural ventila- tion and daylighting and serve a dual purpose as overflow parking for the Englewood mass transit stops. • 11. VICTOR VALLEY TRANSIT AUTHORITYh e s p e r i a c a l i f o r n i a AERIAL PERSPECTIVE The Victor Valley Transit Authority (VVTA) was looking for a Transit Campus de- sign that was thought provoking and an icon for the California High Desert. The answer was a four building campus that invokes movement and sustainability generated through dynamic architectural forms. The campus includes a 26,000 square foot Administrative and Operations building, 36,000 square foot Mainte- nance Facility, a Fuel/Fare/Wash facility, a Public CNG fueling facility, as well as covered and uncovered storage for 254 buses. Relationships between all of the buildings were created through the use of color, form, and materials – keeping all the buildings strongly connected. LEED Gold certification will be realized through the use of many different sustainable design elements such as daylighting, build- ing orientation, the use of optimized overhangs and louvers, a Photovoltaic bus canopy for on site renewable energy, a transpired solar collection wall, innova- tive wastewater technologies including water efficient landscaping, recycled and regional materials and several other sustainable strategies. The budget for VVTA is $44 million and it is scheduled to begin construction in February of 2008.

  • 13. The new Sunset Maintenance Facility for the Regional Transportation Com- mission (RTC) of southern Nevada is a highly visible civic project in southern Las Vegas. Design emphasis has been placed on creating a functional, co- hesive and attractive campus that encourages a strong visual connection to public transportation. The employee and visitor entries have been developed along view corridors, creating unexpected and secure visual connections to the bus service yard. To further emphasize RTC’s main public front the visitor parking is also rotated to align with this view corridor. With the ability to be isolated for after hours events this centrally located lobby also contains the training areas, which will eventually be shared by the ad- ministration and operations departments of both fixed route and bus rapid transit. The extra volume generated by the use of sloped roofs has been utilized uni- versally to create mezzanines which conceal the mechanical equipment. The sloped roofs, similar forms, materials and colors, create a consistent language between the various buildings reinforcing the campus concept. R.T.C. • 15. SOUTH BEND TRANSPO s o u t h b e n d i n d i a n a SITE PLAN The new Emil “Lucky” Reznik Center to be located in the new Studebaker redevelopment will provide Transpo with a much needed state of the art main- tenance and operations facility. The initial project includes an administration and operations wing, a high tech maintenance facility, and an enclosed bus storage area for a seventy six bus fleet with fuel, fare and wash functions. The design is functional, iconographic and environ- mentally friendly, addressing the requirements of operating with efficiency, durability, and safety, and with a sense of pride and civic duty. The Transpo building and landscape will be holistically unified by scale, forms, materials, textures, articulation and design concept to create a dynamic aesthetic, and functionally superior facility that is of its place and time. The new Transpo facility carries the lofty goal of be- coming the first transportation facility in the country (possibly the world) to attain the prestigious LEED Platinum certification. This program begins with op- timal building orientation which assists with passive solar gain, snow melt and controlled daylighting of the facility. Building materials, which are integral to the success of this project, are economically effi- cient, functional, durable, beautiful, sourced locally, and efficiently used. The integration of site and building design will reduce operational expenses and aid in reducing the dependence on foreign energy sources while aiming to reduce waste by implementing a recycling system for all areas of the building.

  • 19. AL GAHDEER MASTER PLAN a b u d h a b i U A E
  • 20. Urban Design Concept Statement With an expected rate of 80% ex-patriot occupancy at Al Ghadeer there is a need to educate the population to the rich cultural history of the region and at the same time provide the modern appointments that are expected. It is anticipated that the layering of these multi-national cultures within the district will add to the richness of the cultural experience. Historic patterns and textures will be used in both common and uncommon ways as a consistent thread to stitch the urban context together reinforced with consistent landscaping and urban design features. Contemporary tensile fabric structures will be featured in prominent public spaces to Provide shade and gathering places as a constant reminder of the regions culture. Occupants can wonder safely through the whole site via pedestrian parkways that link the neighborhoods with parks, amenities and the centrally located District Center and park. These parkways will allow for interaction, education and cultural experience. Major arteries are crossed either on grade at signalled intersections or beneath with pedestrian underpasses. The civic open space at the District Center crosses over the Central beltway with an iconic bridge leading to Lake Center Park and eventually back into the neighborhoods via the regional pedestrian parkways. The park systems and Lake Central park in particular have been conceived to host a multiplicity of activities for all ages from educational and interpretive parks, to active play spaces and contemplation parks meant to reinforce ones spiritual needs. Through the layering of these numerous concepts, Al Ghadeer will be a wonderfully rich and dynamic district that appeals to its occupants intellectual, physical, social and spiritual needs while promoting an easy, healthy and sustainable way of living.

  • 22. SITE PLAN SECOND LEVEL PLAN ENTRY LEVEL PLAN The Boulder Jewish Community Center embodies the diversity of the religion as a celebration of the positive elements of the Jew- ish faith and history, it would be too easy to pick up on the shards and destructive influence of their history - plus it has already been done. Jewish faith is very strongly based on the idea of Jews as “a na- tion” or as a family (“children of Israel”) sharing a common history, destiny and connection. “Galut” refers to Jews living outside of Israel and translates to exile, captivity or dispersion. Despite the diversity of beliefs the relationship to the community (at all levels) is of utmost importance. Cross cultural adaptation is common in the Jewish faith where foreign cultural elements have been incor- porated into the Jewish mainstream beliefs. Evidence of this can be found in several key areas of their culture – language, music and religion: The entry sequence here is a metaphor for the events from the story of Exodus; forty years of wandering in the desert led by Mo- ses who eventually provides food, water and knowledge for the 13 tribes who are represented in this scheme by the thirteen flowering fruit trees on the entry axis . At the entrance point to the entry courtyard the library form is more prominent as Jews consider education brings one closer to God. This idea is reinforced as it is also a tall space with strong vertical thrust. The library form is also a metaphor for Moses going “in” to the mountain to retrieve the commandments (knowledge). With elevation comes proximity to God, also Jerusalem is sited on top of a hill. The final stage to the entry sequence is the entry to the lobby which is up several steps also adding civic importance. Sokkat is a festival or holiday to celebrate the feeding of the jews in the desert during exodus. Part of the ritual includes building a per- gola/shading element which is represented by the shade canopy around the main lobby space shading the main entry and amphi- theater courtyards.
