Mussolini and his fascist groups gained power in Italy in 1922 when the king asked Mussolini to form a government after the fascist's threatened march on Rome. Violent fascist groups had formed after World War 1 in response to socialism and a weak government, and were supported by industrialists and landowners hoping to prevent socialist control, allowing Mussolini and the fascists to seize control of the national government.
