Seven tips to focus on as the leader or manager of agile teams. This talk was given at the ITWEB conference in 2015 in South Africa and at #SGPRG (Scrum Gathering Prague)
Mindset shift
Change focus from work / people to environment & relationships
Theory X vs Theory Y – need to be Theory Y for agile
Everyone wants to do the best job they can, you need to make that possible by creating an environment where they can
Standup if you want Hyperproductivity
Standup if you want to grow skills
Standup if you want to retain people
Necessary for hyperproductivity/ growth and retention
Hiring – let the team decide – give boundaries - veto rights only.
Even better don’t interview – just get people to do short contracts (3 days part time)
Performance appraisals don’t create excellent people. In fact that they are damaging.
One on one actionable feedback regularly helps people improve.
If you can, get rid of PA’s, if not remove the score and emphasize regular feedback (monthly)
Open salaries if you can, if not adopt the mindset that if leaked everyone would think they are fair.
Fix salaries that are out of line over 2 to 3 years
Bump people who have been there a long time.
Don’t cut salaries but reduce increases for those higher than bands (and explain why you are doing that.)
Never let a hiring decision take salaries out of whack again.
