This document discusses the importance of cultural awareness and preparation for studying abroad. It defines culture and explains that cultural immersion involves expecting differences rather than judging cultures as better or worse. Developing cultural competency skills like flexibility, self-awareness, communication and adaptation can help students have a more enjoyable experience abroad and translate to future careers. The five Vincentian virtues of simplicity, humility, meekness, mortification and zeal provide guidelines for approaching study abroad with an open mindset and working hard to fully immerse oneself in the local culture. Researching the destination culture independently is also recommended.
