Social Darwinism believed that individuals were subject to natural selection and survival of the fittest, so the rich were considered fit and the poor unfit. It justified racism, eugenics, and imperialism. The Gospel of Wealth argued the wealthy should use philanthropy to help the poor through libraries and donations rather than just leaving money to heirs. Both viewed the rich as superior but the Gospel of Wealth aimed to improve the poor's condition while Social Darwinism saw the poor as inferior and deserving to die off.

Social Darwinism was used to justify imperialism and social policies like laissez-faire capitalism, while discouraging intervention and reform. It also provided justification for racist ideologies and practices.

This Dissertation explores the particular circumstances of Mirzapur, a region located in the

environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is

- 1. Social Darwinism and The Gospel of Wealth By: Zoe Byrd
- 2. What is Social Darwinism? Social Darwinism is a philosophy where individuals, groups, and people are subject to the same Darwinian laws of natural selection as plants and animals. Therefor, the “fittest” will survive, and the “weak” will die off. Those who supported Social Darwinism believed the rich were the “fittest” and the poor were the “weakest”, so they should be left to die off instead of being helped.
- 3. How has Social Darwinism Influenced Society? As more immigrated to the United States, Social Darwinism was used to justify racism, since supporters believed some races were inferior to others. Also as a consequence of this philosophy, many immigrants, along with women and minorities, were sterilized because of the eugenics movement. After the Spanish-American War, it was also used to justify American imperialism in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
- 4. What is The Gospel of Wealth? The Gospel of Wealth, created by Scottish immigrant Andrew Carnegie, is a philosophy that says rich Americans, who were intelligent and skilled, take it upon themselves to help close the gap between the rich and poor through philanthropy and therapy. Carnegie thought leaving money to your children was wrong, so he gave away almost all of his money and created libraries for the public.
- 5. How has the Gospel of Wealth Influenced Society? The Gospel of Wealth influenced many of the wealthy to become more philanthropic and generous, like John D. Rockefeller. Because of this, philanthropy and donating has a much more widespread role in today’s society. However, some who had extreme wealth used the Gospel of Wealth to justify them not helping out the poor and others.
- 6. Differences Although the Gospel of Wealth was loosely based on Social Darwinism, the two philosophies had distinct differences. While the Gospel of Wealth aimed to improve the condition of the poor through philanthropy, Darwinists believed the poor should be left to die off because they were lazy, inferior, and less fit. Social Darwinism promoted the idea that anyone could prosper by working hard, but Carnegie said it was the job of the wealthy to help to the poor become more prosperous.
- 7. Similarities Since the Gospel of Wealth was based on Social Darwinism, the two share many common ideals and beliefs. In both philosophies, the wealthy were painted as superior to the poor. They were more intelligent, better fit, and hard-working, while the poor were lazy, stupid, and less fit. Both philosophies also had common values with the Protestant religion, like working hard for what you want.
