Goodness is a fruit of the Spirit that is defined as uprightness of heart and life characterized by unselfish acts that benefit others. It involves sharing one's material wealth, time, talents, and strength of heart with others through acts like giving to the poor, serving one's community, and even rebuking those in error when needed. Goodness cannot be manufactured but is a gift from God developed in Christians as they are filled with the Holy Spirit and do good works that glorify Him.

Moving Forward in Uncertain Times | A Sermon from Matthew 2:13-23Steve Thomason
The beginning of a New Year can often be a time of mixed emotions. This sermon looks at Matthew and Joseph and explores how the promises of God empower us to move into the uncertain future.
Tomorrow we are starting a new series of study:
“The New Man” is a seminar that will focus on the spirit of man, its soul and its body.
We will learn the properties of each one of these three parts of man.
Our spirit is called to be the ruling part of us, actually, our spirit is the main part of our being, and is the place where the spirit of God dwells in.
We meet in Room #3 at CTF Toronto Wednesdays from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. I invite you to come and participate with us in this discovery of how to let our spirit become the ruler of our life.

Salt and Light: You are the light of the worldStephen Palm
Within the language of Mt. 5:16 there is a rich vocabulary of words describing how Jesus intended us to function as the light of the world. We will explore these words and the imagery they suggest and then explore our calling to dispel darkness and reveal the light of Christ. We will also explore some practical ways that we can do this.
This sermon will focus on two key Pauline texts. In 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 Paul gives us some general instructions in demolishing strongholds by using God's means. In Ephesians 2 he identifies 3 strongholds by name, the world, the flesh and the devil.
“Being used by God
is not confined to pastors, preachers or teachers. Anybody can be an instrument
in God's hands.”
God can use anybody, believer or nonbeliever.

What does it mean to be unequally yoked? I contend that, given the literary of cultural/historical context of 2 Corinthians 6:14, Paul is most likely telling the Corinthian church not to become partners with those who were engaging in idol feasts in pagan temples -- for they (the church) are the temple of the Living God (cf. 1 Cor 3:16, 1 Cor 6:19).
Though few worship idols at pagan temples in our society today, there are several idols that are certainly worshiped (money, power, sexual immorality, self, etc.). As in the first century, we in the 21st century should not join others in idolatrous practices.

Gentleness (or meekness) means strength under control. Sadly, it is often mistaken for weakness. But both Moses and Jesus are described as gentle. We demonstrate meekness in our lives by learning, answering, restoring, correcting and living in meekness. (The last portion of this lesson is from Flesh and Spirit, by William Barclay.)

This presentation teaches that spiritual maturity and growth must be a priority of a Christian.
Today's SS lesson, "Living As Strangers". We Christians are to be in the world, looking to love and point people to God's grace by our examples and our genuine good deeds. We first must reject falseness (the old life) in our own lives, then we will be free to be Jesus servants by others
In this first lesson we examine the spirit that every Christian must have. To show things that commonly weigh us down in our spiritual walk. Both audio and slides can be found together at www.cmcoc.org

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

19. Defining “Goodness”Defining “Goodness”
• Goodness is virtue and holiness in
action.
– It results in a life characterized by deeds
motivated by righteousness and a desire to be
a blessing.
– It's a moral characteristic of a Spirit-filled
person.
20. • The Greek word translated “goodness,”
agathosune, is defined as "uprightness
of heart and life."
• Agathosune is goodness for the benefit
of others, not goodness simply for the
sake of being virtuous.
21. • Someone with agathosune will selflessly act
on behalf of others.
• Confronting someone about a sin
demonstrates goodness.
• So do giving to the poor, providing for one’s
children, visiting the sick, volunteering to
clean up after a storm, and praying for an
enemy – is agathosune
Expressions of goodness are as
varied as the Spirit is creative.
22. Goodness is not a quality we canGoodness is not a quality we can
manufacture on our ownmanufacture on our own
• James 1:17 says, "Every good thing
given and every perfect gift is from
above, coming down from the Father of
lights."
• This certainly includes a life
characterized by goodness.
23. • In letting the Holy Spirit control us, we
are blessed with the fruit of goodness.
• As others see our good works, they will
praise our Father in heaven (
Matthew 5:16).
24. • Christians are exhorted to do good works,
such as teaching and preaching the Word of
God, encouraging and serving in various
ways within the fellowship of believers.
• "And let us not grow weary while doing good,
for in due season we shall reap if we do not
lose heart. Therefore, as we have
opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to
those who are of the household of faith."
Gal. 6:9, 10
25. Romans 12 has specific teaching regardingRomans 12 has specific teaching regarding
Christian conductChristian conduct
• "Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is
evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly
affectionate to one another with brotherly
love, in honor giving preference to one
another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in
spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope,
patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in
prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints,
given to hospitality."
26. • All these actions express goodness, the
sterling character of someone filled with
the Holy Spirit.
27. Conclusion:Conclusion:
• Goodness is the nature and character of God.
• Goodness will declare truth without concern for the
consequences. Speaking can appear to be unkind at times,
but goodness will say what a person needs to hear not just
what they want to hear. But we must be careful to speak in a
right way under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
• Goodness always acts in unity with the righteousness of
God.
• Goodness will produce good works that glorify the Lord. We
have been created in Christ Jesus to do good works that
reflect the beauty of Jesus in us.
Editor's Notes
ag-ath-o-soo’-nay Ro 15:14 Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness <19>, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. Eph 5:9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness <19>, righteousness, and truth),
Eph. 4:28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.
“ full of good works and charitable deeds” (v. 36) – NOTE “ which she did ” (v. 39). Tabitha was not full of “good intentions” but good works “which she did.” made tunics and garments for widows (v. 39) – some of the fruit of her work was in making tunics and garments for widows. She had a talent and used that talent in service to others. POINT: I see many talented women in the Lord’s church today. Sometimes they wonder what can they do for the Lord. I have to wonder if they are awaken to their talents? What are you good at? Why not plan to make something for someone? Why not make a card for a widow? Why not make a visit for a widow? Why not make a meal for a widow? Why not do something? Tit 2:5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good , obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed. POINT 2: There is something to say about these widows too. They were grateful for Tabitha’s example, for her person (v. 39). You don’t get the impression that these widows were demanding any charity, they were not the kind of people who sit back with an open hand and had their feelings hurt if someone didn’t pay them a visit. They were a gracious group who sincerely loved Tabitha for who she was.

We can do so much evil with our bodies – We are given a dash in history to live and with that dash we can live such an evil life, filled with hatred, wickedness, immorality and all kinds of sinfulness. THE FACT THAT WE HAVE THE CAPABILITY OF DOING SO MUCH EVIL SHOULD DRIVE US NEARER AND NEARER TO THE LORD! “ Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (Jas. 4:7) If the world stands another 100 years one thing is for sure. . .you will not be standing with it! None who are here today will be. Somewhere your physical remains will be housed, perhaps in a plot of ground. Perhaps they will be scattered upon the sea. . .but you will yet give an account for how you lived upon this earth. “ whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away” (Jas. 4:14) Your life will vanish, but the record of it will remain. “What is your life?” Is your life good as God defines goodness? Have you obeyed the gospel? That is the beginning of reaching the goodness of God.
