Solution The populist movement was started by the farmers in the 19th century in order to bring about an economic, whereas progressive movement commenced in 20th century by the urban middle class against the political system which was considered to be corrupt. The people of the populist movement were called the populists, whose basic demands was to impose high taxes on big corporate houses. The populists wanted the government to take full control over all the sectors in the economy, from telephone to railways, to banks and industries. The Progessive movement revolved around bringing about both a political and economic change in the society. It\'s major stakeholders was the educated middle class from urban areas, who stood against the corrupt government and also questioned the political decision makers about inflation and other activities than affected the day to day life of a common man. Progressive movement had more successes as it involved a more holistic approach to economic development, wherein industries and other economic sectors were encouraged to fluorish in a free and conducive economic environment.
