5 Tips and Tricks for IELTS Essay
If you are looking to go abroad for studies or for work, you have definitely come across IELTS
or the International English Language Testing System. Since English is the native language in
the countries where you are planning to go, you need to be adept at English. Depending on
your purpose for travelling outside India, you may need to give IELTS Academic or IELTS
General test. While there are other standardised tests like TOEFL and PTE, IELTS has much
wider acceptability.
IELTS Format
The test has got four sections; listening, reading, writing and speaking and the candidates are
evaluated on all these parameters and graded from 0 to 9. The speaking test is conducted
separately whereas the other three (Listening, Reading, Writing or LRW) are organised
together. These grades are known as ‘bands’ and the average of the four sections is your
overall IELTS band. Although the higher the better, the band required for various purposes,
from studies to work differs from country to country and case to case.
Essay
The writing is the last part of the LRW test and consists of two tasks; a letter and an essay.
Both the tasks need to be completed in one hour. An essay is a short piece of writing on a
particular subject. It has to be completed in about 40 minutes and must be at least 250 words
long. The topics on which a student needs to write the essay are general like technology,
history and society and do not need specific knowledge. An essay is graded on four
parameters.
 The first one is task response which decides if the student has addressed all the parts
of the task or not.
 The second is about the sequencing and paragraphing skills and is called coherence
and cohesion.
 The last two deal with your vocabulary and range of grammar.
5 Tips for IELTS Essay
Writing is one of the toughest parts of the IELTS test and with the modern age, internet and
mobile phones, most of us have forgotten the art of writing. However, there are simple things
that you can keep in mind while writing the essay and score well.
1. Time Management: Writing 250 words in 40 minutes if not difficult but writing a well-
argued essay in 40 minutes is not easy making time management essential. You should
be very careful not to cross the time limit in your first task, report, in order to have all
of the 40 minutes with you. The first few minutes of this time must be spent ideating.
The essay will have two sides or two questions and you must think of the points you
want to make on these sides.
2. The structure of the Essay: A good essay will have a beginning (introduction), a middle
(where you state your arguments) and an end (a conclusion to wrap it all neatly). And
it is for this reason that you must ideate in the beginning and note down points that
are relevant to the topic.
3. Answer to the point: Most students with good grammar lose their marks because they
stray from the topic and believe us, it is very easy to stray from the topic. For example,
if you are asked to talk about the advantages of taking a flight for leisure purposes, it
is likely that many will just point out the benefits of taking a flight and ignore the ‘for
leisure’ part. This will reduce your marks as you would score low in task response.
4. Conclude with clarity: A strong conclusion which is cogent and does not leave any
room for doubt is always the right way to end the essay. It is always better to write ‘I
feel this trend is negative’ than ‘this trend could be harmful’ since the first sentence is
clear.
5. Proofread and edit: What do you do once you are done with your essay? You
proofread, that’s what. Always leave some minutes in the end for editing your essay
and removing any unforced grammatical errors like spelling mistakes. This is essential
because the best of us make mistakes while under test conditions and writing to a
deadline. An average student who meticulously proofreads is likely to do better than
a good student who does not check his writing in the end.
What now?
Writing is hard, there is no doubt about it. Most students in India, because of our tough
education system, become good at listening and reading, but fail to do justice to the writing
part. At FLC, we know this fact, so, walk into any of our branches today!
