Editor's Notes
Recently a close friend lost her job, and she remarked that she was confused as to how to handle this.
She said there were lots of advice online, but confusing
I condensed these into 5 essential points based on my own personal experience, as well as what I saw most useful to those that I have helped
Thought I’d share these with you
These are the 5 areas
I’ll go thro each point over the next few slides
One of the most difficult things when you first experience job lost, is to believe that you are not a failure
Its unfortunate that nowadays, it’s common for companies to cut their loses by restructuring – it can happen to anyone, and it has happened to a lot of people
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
There’s nothing to be ashamed of, and you have certainly not let anyone down by losing your job
“every job is temporary” – I find this a very powerful statement
If we can tune our belief that no job is guaranteed, we can prepare ourselves mentally
BLEIEVE IN YOURSELF
Its not uncommon for us to shut ourselves off when something like this happens.
This comes because we believe we have failed our loved ones
BUT you should be doing the opposite – tell your loved ones what happened
Its time like these that you need emotional support
This can come from family, friends – key is to be open about things and re-engage
You would be pleasantly surprised at what can come about
Focus on what matters to you
Enjoy yourself! – I know this may sound kinda silly and I don’t meant to be flippant about a serious situation
BUT I’ve often heard that many find this period to be the most productive and fulfilling period of their lives!
You get a chance to do things you’ve always wanted but never had the time
Eg learn a new skill, visit a new destination,
Be open to new experiences
Most importantly, focus on what gives you joy
Now is also the time to re- assess what you really want to do
Be clear about what your goals are
Better still, create a Business Plan – after all we are in a “business of One” – so what not plan our career like a business!
Look at new opportunities with a different eye – that’s what happened to me and it resulted in my ah- ha moment!
Now is also not the time to think you can do everything by yourself
Go get help – its not a sign of failure or guilt
Help can come from may sources
Mentor – bounce off ideas. Get advice
Coach – for a structure approach to your job search
Even from your own network – best source for new career opportunities
