The Digital Landscape of Scottish Schools - Napier University Keynote Present...Ollie Bray
This document discusses the digital landscape of Scottish schools. It notes that Scotland has 1 country, 32 local authorities, 3,000 schools, 54,000 teachers and 750,000 students. It highlights that digital skills and literacy are increasingly important for students and discusses approaches to teaching these skills, including critical analysis of online information. The document advocates for innovative teaching methods that utilize digital tools and resources to improve learning outcomes.
This document provides an introduction to Linux, including its history from Unix and the GNU project. It describes the roles and responsibilities of a Linux system administrator, such as creating user accounts, maintaining systems, and recovering from emergencies. Tips are provided for working at the Linux command line and finding documentation. Key features of Linux include stability, security, flexibility and low cost.
The document discusses mobile teaching and learning and the future trends in this area. It introduces the ICT Center, which aims to create a sustainable national education system for information and communications technologies. It outlines three key challenges for ICT pedagogy: keeping content and delivery current, engaging subject matter experts, and sharing knowledge quickly. It then discusses various connecting technologies like Second Life, iTunesU, and web tools that can help address these challenges.
Hurricane Katrina caused widespread flooding and devastation in New Orleans, Louisiana in late August 2005. The hurricane broke levees protecting the city, which sits below sea level, causing 80% of the city to flood. Over 100,000 residents were trapped in their homes without access to food, water or electricity. The federal government was slow to respond to the scale of the disaster. It took days to begin large-scale evacuation and relief efforts. The storm exposed issues of poverty, race, and inadequate emergency planning in New Orleans and the United States.
The document discusses how perceptions can prevent accurate drawing by filtering information and providing an incorrect understanding of the subject. It states that perceptions will not change without instruction and identifies four basic components of drawing: site (where parts go), shape (what they look like), shade (how to make it look real), and accuracy (how to fix things that don't look "right"). Learning these components can help overcome perceptions that have previously prevented accurate drawing.
The document discusses integrating mathematics into science subjects like chemistry, biology, and physics. It provides examples of how to use mathematical concepts and skills like percentages, graphs, standard forms, and unit conversions when teaching topics in these subjects. Some specific examples mentioned include using graphs to show the relationship between solubility and temperature, calculating oxygen production through photosynthesis, and assigning locations in space using mathematical coordinates. The document emphasizes that integrating mathematics enhances learning and understanding of science concepts.
The document discusses top-down and bottom-up approaches to curriculum development and maturing. Traditionally, standards are developed top-down but courses can evolve standards bottom-up by incorporating new knowledge and competencies. Curricula can mature through bottom-up contributions from courses that help standards evolve. Semantic mapping of curricula, standards, competencies, activities and assessments allows for academic analytics and formative evaluation to support ongoing curriculum improvement through bottom-up and top-down processes.
The document discusses how the rise of the internet and social media has impacted politics and democracy. It notes that with more products and candidates available online, politics is seeing "the long tail effect" with fewer blockbuster candidates and more niche candidates gaining support. This aligns with two conditions needed for a long tail. It also suggests increased online participation could lead to higher voter turnout and more involvement in politics, strengthening democracy.
Great Plains Diesel Technologies InjectorDoug Mitchell
The document proposes developing a new type of fuel injector for diesel engines using terbium alloy. It summarizes the key issues with current injector technologies and regulations requiring cleaner combustion. A terbium alloy actuator could enable much faster and more precisely controlled injection, improving efficiency and reducing emissions. The proposal outlines milestones to design and test a prototype injector, develop the necessary terbium metallurgy and electronic control capabilities, and conduct engine tests. Success could open a large market and disrupt current injector technologies.

The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive function. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms.
The document describes several experiments investigating the composition of inhaled and exhaled air. Pie charts are used to illustrate that exhaled air contains higher levels of carbon dioxide and water vapor compared to inhaled air, due to cellular respiration. Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation can revive someone by providing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from their lungs.
This document summarizes a study on developing self-direction indicators for evaluating an eLearning course that used social software. The study analyzed student reflections in blogs to identify indicators of self-direction during a design-based learning course. Key findings were that indicators of self-direction could be systematically collected from reflections but tensions exist between individual and group work. While reflections provided evidence of self-direction in individual activities, students who actively participated in teams stopped reflecting on self-direction. The indicators also did not correlate, indicating problems using self-direction systematically in reflections.
