Cerebral palsy (CP) describes a group of motor syndromes caused by disorders of early brain development from genetic, metabolic, ischemic or infectious insults. While 80% of CP cases are from antenatal factors, fewer than 10% are from intrapartum asphyxia. CP manifestations vary depending on the involved areas of the brain and extremities, and can include spastic hemiplegia, diplegia, quadriplegia or athetoid forms. Diagnosis involves examination, imaging and ruling out other conditions; treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach including exercises, therapy and parental education.
