Warren takes his son James to see a psychiatrist who specializes in music therapy. The psychiatrist observes James interacting with his sister Megan and talks to James, discovering that he is passionate about music. James admits that he is unhappy at school and feels ignored compared to his more confident sister. Megan later gets into trouble for being out past curfew and meets Trinity, who suggests that Megan support her brother more. The psychiatrist then recommends that James attend a boarding school focused on music, which upsets Megan as she had not expected her brother to be sent away.
1. Over at the Bailey’s, Warren was busy dealing with
his sons needs. He had found a psychiatrist who
specialised in music therapy on the local hospitals
website. He did home visits, and had come to meet
James face to face.
2. He began by observing him
and his little sister. Megan
was audibly annoyed by the
special attention being given
him, and kept subtly pointing
out he was hardly the
families star pupil.
3. Next, he sat down to have a long chat
with James. The subject of music
appeared very quickly, without the
psychiatrist bringing it up.
4. He asked James how music made him feel, and the
boy visibly lit up as he talked. He talked about
people and places and genres… Warren had never
seen him so animated.
5. The stranger turned the
conversation around onto the
subject of school, and James
admitted he wasn’t very happy
at his. His sister was so
confident, people only referred
to him as ‘Megan’s brother’
and largely ignored him. He
couldn’t find his place.
Megan, who was
eavesdropping, refused to feel
guilty about that. If he would
just talk to people, he’d make
friends in no time. She had no
appreciation of how hard it
could be to be shy.
6. With her homework finished and
everyone's attention still squarely
on James, Megan decided to get out
of the house, cycle off some of her
frustration. She forgot that it was
after dark, and therefore after
curfew.
7. Trinity was on her
way back from a job
alongside the Poet
when she spotted
Megan hanging
around the back of
some buildings.
8. Something in Megan's sullen nature calls to her, so she strikes up a
conversation. After a little probing, Megan talks about her brother. He’s
weird and annoying, and gets more attention than her.
9. Driving her home like the
responsible citizen she
pretended to be, Trinity
softly suggests that Warren
and Teresa worry about
James more because,
having lost a parent at an
early age, he might have
behavioural or social
developmental problems
to overcome.
Really, she’s the lucky one
and should support her big
brother.
10. Megan came back with a
cheeky quip, and Trinity
found herself liking the kid.
She recognised a child who
was a little bit different from
the family she was born to…
and that was familiar.
11. Trinity suggested, if it’s ok
with her parents, that Megan
come round her house for an
afternoon now and again.
Trinity figures this would be
special treatment for Megan
which she craved, and would
get her out of her parents
hair.
12. At the end of the day
Megan had been out after
curfew, and that was
illegal. Trinity knew all
about being successful on
the wrong side of the law,
and you didn’t want to
start out by becoming
known to the police too
young as some kind of
delinquent.
Not that she was
suggesting a criminal
career for her young
neighbour… but still.
13. Megan returns home to a shock, the specialist had suggested James attend
a boarding school that concentrates on music and the arts. He would
improve his social skills while learning about what he loves.
14. James wants to go, and her mum and dad
are behind the idea as well. Megan can’t
help but reflect that you should be careful
what you wish for.
For all her harsh words, Megan was still
taken aback. She had never dreamed her
big brother would be sent away.
