This document discusses Canada's Bay of Fundy as a critical location for developing marine renewable energy at an industrial scale. It outlines Canada's progress and contribution to the pathway toward commercializing tidal energy. Key points include Canada having supportive legislation and infrastructure like FORCE to facilitate early commercial deployments. The goal is a staged 300MW prototype project by 2020-2025 to demonstrate tidal energy can meet market needs for cost, scale, and reliability. Both large industrial projects and smaller community-scale deployments are seen as important to fully demonstrate tidal energy solutions.

SMUD's PV Pioneer Program was the first commercialization effort for grid-connected PV in the US. The concepts behind SMUD PV Pioneer Program are essential in addressing the issues and challenges currently facing all utilities as well as other entrants in to the utility market space. These include: an understanding of market transformation dynamics, the creation of a truly compelling product/service offering in partnership with specific vendors, and the re-orientation of the utility/customer relationship.
Challenges at project level for microgrid solutions lisbon 2016Trevor De Vries
There is a significant gap in the electricity sector to retrofit high penetration renewable energy resources into existing diesel power systems while maintaining the performance and reliability of the system. Remote communities and mining applications are prime candidates to utilize renewable energy resources e.g. solar and wind, integrating them into the existing diesel fired generation system due to significant cost of diesel fuel. Although, microgrid applications in these remote communities and mining sites are attractive, there are various challenges which should be taken into account at project level. In this presentation, various technical, financial and logistic challenges for the application of microgrid systems with some case studies which have been deployed by Canadian Solar, will be discussed. Technical solutions, at the project level, will be presented and the Canadian Solar Microgrid Test Centre and their holistic approach to address various technical challenges will be introduced. MTC is a scaled-down hardware implementation of prospective microgrid system design equipped with a various renewable energy resources, including diesel generators, wind turbine,PV system, PV and wind resource simulators, grid simulator, and power storage devices to facilitate design and testing of even the most demanding microgrid solutions.

Isolated island power systems are experiencing unprecedented demands for the connection of solar PV. This is currently seen as a threat to traditional utility models. As costs of renewable energy are decreasing, there is increasing complexity in the integration and the economics surrounding this. The realisation of existing investments in networks and generators is often shaping the discussions and way forward. The presentation will discuss the impact of disruptive technologies on islanded systems.

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.

2. Progress toward recognition of marine energy
as a clean energy solution: Canada’s Bay of
Fundy as a critical path to industrial scale
Chris M Campbell Ph.D.
Senior Advisor
•
•
3. Who do we need to impress?
• Purchasers of electrons
• Power project developers
• Supply chain
• Lenders
• Investors
• Certification agencies
• Insurers, etc.
What do they need to see?
• Movement to competitive cost of energy
• Ability to meet in-service dates and reliable energy supply
• Plant scale that meets market needs
• A solution that can be replicated in a larger market
So, it is a project developer story – supported by technology maturation
4. Canada’s Bay of Fundy
• Safe extraction target >> 2GW
• The right FIT for the first stage
• A supportive Government and public
• Shared infrastructure to reduce costs and risks for the first stage - FORCE
• Access to installation experience and 64 MW of offshore connection
• Facilitated permitting, environmental research and monitoring
• Access to transmission capacity
• A strong shareholder owned energy company
• A vision for a hydro-backed regional resource development, enhanced
grid interconnection and electricity market development
• Engagement of the worlds leaders
• Emera, Atlantis Resources and DP Energy as developers
• Open Hydro, Andritz Hydro, Marine Current Turbines, Atlantis, Schottel,
Bluewater, Tocardo, Nautricity as technology providers
An industrial development strategy – the 300MW
prototype!
5. Canada’s contribution to the pathway to industrial tidal
• MRE legislation in effect
• Planning for next commercial site underway
• FORCE - Open Hydro 2 devices – 4 MW
• FORCE Schottel staged deployment of 2.5 MW
• FORCE Atlantis deployment of 1.5 MW
• FTI Digby Neck deployments
• Potential for new licenses at FORCE
• New Commercial Site area identified
• Deployments by Minas Energy, DP Energy + expansions
• Potential License Call in new area
• FTI Further deployments
• Balance of deployments
• 20-50 MW of tidal energy
• 50 MW+ Federal EA filing
• Expansion to 300+ MW
An international development happening in Nova Scotia!
2015
2016
2017
2018-
2019
2020
6. The big versus small debate?
• Not simply a technology, engineering or financial question
• Solutions must be Fit for Purpose
• There will be significant but small numbers of large
industrial projects
• There will be large numbers of community-scale projects
• Both solutions remain to be demonstrated.
7. But it is not all large-scale!
• FTI – Fundy Tidal Inc.
• 5 sites for community-scale projects
• 1.95 MW in Digby Gut
• 500 kW in each of Grand Passage and Petit Passage
• 100 kW in Barra Strait
• 500 kW in Great Bras d’Or Channel
• Special FIT
• Significant community ownership
• Tribute Resources as project development partner
And not all in Fundy!
• River current solutions
• Several Canadian technology developers
• Canadian Hydrokinetic Turbine Test Centre
• Trial deployments in Canada, US and Asia
• Wave energy integration with coastal communities
• West Coast Wave Energy Initiative
