Cyrus the Younger, born to rule Persia but exiled by his brother Artaxerxes II, built a large army by giving money freely to friends and promising to take action against the governor Tissaphernes. Though initially just a handful of soldiers loyal to Cyrus, his army soon grew to many thousands from across Greece. The common soldier Eustachius witnessed these events leading up to the battle where Cyrus would reclaim his throne from his brother.
