Anarkik 3D Design for 3D modelling software is a great experience. Its haptic (which means ‘virtual touch’), its fun, its intuitive, its playful, its serious, its not CAD! Its different, easier and quick to learn. It is not prescriptive. Serendipity is the default. Its not for everyone as not everyone wants or can deal with a programme with so few constraints. Artistic persons can!
We developed Anarkik 3D Design for designer makers, applied artists and 3D artists who want a balance between working at the bench and working digitally, want freedom to explore digital form creating, be playful and be able to access 3D printing.
My presentation is about how the right software can make 3D print technology more accessible to many more people and to explain why some artists and designer makers need software that is different from CAD.

We discussed some of the popular misconceptions around desktop vs SLS printing, how 3D Printing applies to client campaigns, as well as Fashion, Selfies, and of course, #3dprintfails. Just don’t ask me to print a gun!
What if you are passionate about 3D printing but can't do CAD. The issue is that to 3D print you need a 3D digital model, not just any model but a watertight solid model in a specific file format. CAD software has been the main way to produce the models for 3D printing and CAD does not fit with many people's way of thinking so they struggle if they get that far!. Fortunately there are now alternative methods of creating and getting models and this presentation, given at the 3DPrintShow 2014 in London, covers those that would be of more interest to applied artists, 3D artists and designer makers. You don’t have to use CAD.

Using a series of compelling case studies, this updated presentation enhanced from just a year ago, will highlight the evolution, current capabilities, and future possibilities for realizing the potential of 3D scanning for 3D printing. Discussion will include background and observations on
the business of 3D scanning and 3D printing with clues to leveraging the explosion of 3D for other downstream design, analysis, and visualization demands. The practical challenges for converting 3D scan data into 3D print-ready files will also be discussed.

Maryland-Based Manufacturers Produce Busts of Governor Larry Hogan for Manufa...Direct Dimensions, Inc.

September 2010, Direct Dimensions traveled to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia to 3D laser scan the Caligula statue. The scanning took a full day using the FARO Platinum Arm, the Faro Laser Scanner, and PolyWorks software. Direct Dimensions then converted this raw point cloud data into a super high resolution watertight polygon mesh model for subsequent analysis.

This PowerPoint presents the technologies for 3D imaging human facial and other body parts for the digital design and fabrication of cosmetically accurate prosthetics.
This was presented by Direct Dimensions at the April 2007 conference for then named American Anaplastology Association.
With the advent of higher powered 3D scanners comes the challenge of dealing with the dense point cloud data sets. Direct Dimensions uses a wide variety of 3D scanning equipment to capture the as-built shape of existing objects. The common problem with all of these projects is the need to proces the point cloud data.
While applications fall generally into either reverse engineering and inspection, both directions present challenges for processing the large data sets efficiently, quickly, and properly. This presentation will focus on an overview of the software tools available commercially that address these problems with a comparison of the various workflows, strategies, and results that one can expect from the various solutions.
There are many reasons why firms need to model the exterior contour of existing aircraft OMLs (Outer Mold Lines). Most aircraft flying today were not designed in a modern 3D CAD program. Even with a current 3D digital design, the actual as-built contour deviates from the intended shape, at least at some level.
Direct Dimensions has used a wide variety of 3D measurement equipment and software for nearly 15 years to accurately capture and model these shapes for many different applications and purposes. This presentation will focus on the evolution of 3D scanning equipment and software through many examples with emphasis on practical application, costs, schedules, deliverables, etc.
Having real world customers that demand higher quality and lower price over time for this application, Direct Dimensions has continually searched for the best tools and methods for performing these projects. This experience and perspective will be freely shared with the audience in order to develop an appreciation for the selection of such tools for these projects.

4. A Call for 3D Imaging Answering the Call for 3D Imaging
When CEO of Direct Dimensions, Inc., Michael Raphael, saw an
artist’s plea for help with 3D scanning for an upcoming art exhibit
in NYC, he knew that it would be a great opportunity to show
the Art world the amazing possibilities his company offers. “The
real reason I decided to help him is because simply we can do this
SO well, that it’s not a stretch for us, but that if ANYBODY else
attempted this, it would not have gotten done in time or possibly
at all”. Direct Dimensions, Inc. has served the Art world for over a
decade working with famed artists including Jeff Koons, Barry X
Ball and Rob Pruitt, as well as acclaimed museums such as the
Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery, the Getty

5. On Site at MoMA PS1 Answering the Call for 3D Imaging
A crew of three techs headed to New York City. They brought three different types of scanners and all of the
equipment that would be used on the job. They arrived and got the space set up for two days of scanning.

The Artist, Josh Kline, lined up 13 subjects (including himself) who would each have one body part scanned. Over
the two days, DDI techs scanned six hands with bottles, four feet in different types of shoes and three heads.

In order to create the best, and most complete, possible 3D models, DDI techs also scanned the bottles and the
shoes separate from their human counterparts. The white spray powder on the bottle above is a non-toxic spray
that creates an opaque surface for the scanner to capture.

Different scanners, and often multiple scanners, were used to collect data depending on the subject matter.

The techs on-site were able to see the data they collected on the laptops they brought so they could make sure
that each subject was captured thoroughly.

Upon return to Direct Dimensions headquarters, the 3D data was used to create high quality 3D digital models that
could be used for 3D printing.

Some sculpting was necessary due to limitations in scanning hair. Luckily several of the Direct Dimensions techs are
highly skilled in 3D digital sculpting.

The artist chose to have others do some additional modeling to finalize the design of the parts for printing.
