The lubricating oil system begins with pumps drawing oil from the drain tank, which is often located in the double bottom of the ship. The oil passes through filters and a cooler to be cooled and purified before entering the distribution branches throughout the engine. Used oil returns to the drain tank through strainers and is purified again before being recirculated through the system. The drain tank has an air vent to release air and a sounding pipe and level gauge to monitor the oil level.
