In 2010, a Prosperity Plan defined the regions economic future through collaboration of all 6 counties, 2 states, federal agencies, City of South Lake Tahoe plus rural areas that make up the Tahoe Truckee watershed. They all agreed to work together in service to the WATER that connects us all and in that spirit create a holistic (eco-onomy) prosperity that would serve the economy, community and environment, by committing their support to 3 clusters: Environmental Innovation, Health and Wellness and Sustainable Tourism (geotourism). Sustainable Tahoe was included as a key player in the geotourism cluster.

The key now is the fully adopt and covert all tourism to geotourism. The lines have already formed (thanks to the Bay Area, Europeans and other visitors who enter the basin with a stewardship heart), so lets' lead by example in hosting our precious water in ways that will sustain or enhance it for the future.

(In 2006)...200 travel experts rated 115 of the worlds top destinations based on the 12 geotourism principles. Lead by Jonathan Tourtellot, ED of NGCSD...Geotourism emerged in1997 as a way to ' educate locals on the value of local authentic assets, reduce poverty and preserve world heritage sites'. A signed Charter was a first step in demonstrating commitment from local leaders to embrace the 12 principles that would ensure the regions sustainable prosperity on all fronts.

Jacquie Chandler of Sustainable Tahoe provided a 4 hr presentation in collaboration with Dr Ross to set up the parameters for the ability to design Fun, Meaningful, Low-Carbon adventures that support sustainable tourism for Tahoe. The goal is for students in build geotourism adventures they would like to experience to deepen their own connection to the area while preserving it in the process. the GeoTrack template is guided by the 12 geotourism principles and the TriNomic model for collaboration that supports prosperity for all who support this type of visitor expereince.

2008 NGCSD and US Dept of Interior MOU
in 2008 National geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations and 5 US Depts of the Interior signed a Memorandum of Understanding committing 10 years of support to all US destinations (on USFS and Indian lands) who embraced and implemented sustainable tourism strategies designed around 12 geotourism principles. Sustainable Tahoe (501c3) has been actively in service to this directive since 2007.

Lake Tahoe's new currency
when looking to grow a sustainable economy, do you want Seed or Sod? Lake Tahoe tourism strategy has relied on large carbon-loading event menu focused around 2 seasons and 4 main activities to attract people.
But really, Tahoe looks better naked. it is much more rewarding to enter the basin like a temple of sacred water waiting and willing to heal, inspire and transform the respectful touch.
