3- The Ruff is a European shorebird where males come in three differen.docxStephenSR9Ramplingv
3. The Ruff is a European shorebird where males come in three different genetic forms, each with a distinct plumage pattern, breeding strategy, and suite of behavioral characteristics. Independent males have highly ornamented and colorful plumage patterns; they defend small territories to which they try to attract females with elaborate plumage displays (see a video here). Satellite males are also ornamented but are less colorful than independent males. They do not defend territories; instead, they lurk on the periphery of the territories of Independent males and attempt to copulate with females attracted by the Independents. Faeder males are smaller and mimic females in body size, plumage pattern, and behavior. Like the Satellite males, they do not defend Ruff (Philomachus pugnax) display territories; however, because of their female-like appearance and behavior, they are tolerated on the territories of Independent males and, like the Satellites, attempt to copulate with females attracted to the Independents. All three genetic forms coexist in stable polymorphism throughout their breeding range. A. Consider two gene loci in the Ruff, one contributing to variation in male plumage pattern and one contributing to variation in male territorial behavior. Would you expect the alleles at these two loci to be in linkage equilibrium or linkage disequilibrium? Briefly explain (4 points). B. Based on what you learned in class about similar complex genetic polymorphisms in Heliconius butterflies and White-throated Sparrows, what predictions would you make about the genetic architecture and proximity of these two gene loci within the Ruff genome? Briefly explain (4 points).

A K l is on chromosome 9 and is linked to the gene encoding the ABO blood group (locus h ). Here are the genotypes and phenotypes for different blood types (we are not considering the Bombay phenotype): Both I A and I l alleles are dominant over i . The I A and I B alleles are co-dominant. Here is a pedigree with affected individuals indicated in black. The two alleles at the AKl locus are A (dominant, wild type) and a (recessive, mutant). The blood types for this family are also noted on this pedigree. A. What are the two possible ways to write the genotype of individual I-3 at the A K I and I loci with phase information? Remember to use horizontal parallel lines or a " p " 6 indicate the orientation of the pairs of alleles on different bomologs (phase). B. What is the genotype of individual 1.4 at the AKI and I loci? 3- Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disorder that is recessive affectin (1).docxStephenSR9Ramplingv
3. Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disorder that is recessive affecting the lungs and digestive tract. People with cystic fibrosis have a mutation in the CFTR gene (transmembrane conductance regulator) that causes the CFTF protein to malfunction. Determine the genotypes of the parents and offspring for the following family scenarios in a and b below. Use ' C ' to indicate a dominant allele and ' C ' for a recessive allele). a. One parent with the recessive condition and the other parent who does not have the disorder have 2 children. Both children have Cystic fibrosis. 8 marks b. Two parents who do not have Cystic fibrosis have 4 children where 1 child has Cystic fibrosis. 10 marks NOTE: You must draw a Punnet square to determine the possible genotypes of the children. When two alternative genotypes are possible for an individual, indicate both.

3- Bobby is finally starting to understand genetics and decided to go.docxStephenSR9Ramplingv
3. Bobby is finally starting to understand genetics and decided to go to a conference. At this conference there is a lecture on genetic mapping in eukaryotes. Bobby is eager to learn and is taking detailed notes. The speaker was taking about spores and how these are found in a tetrad. There were three different possible assortments of the two studied genes in the tetrad: parental ditype, tetratype, and nonparental ditype. Bobby highlighted the terms he didn't understand. Define and explain these terms in your own words.

3- A Peace Corps physician is stationed in a small area of the Carpath.docxStephenSR9Ramplingv
3. A Peace Corps physician is stationed in a small area of the Carpathian Mountains. A few of her patients have hemolytic ancmia- -inemia that results from fragile red blood cell membranes that rupture easily. These patieats have a mutation in the gene A K l (adenylate kinase). Is there any ambiguity as to the phase of I 4 ? C. What is the genotype of individual II-I at the A K l and / loci? Which alleles of each gene are carried on the chromosome he inherited from his father, and which alleles are carried on the chromosome he inberited from his mother? D. Individuals If-1 and I1-2 just had a baby boy who has blood type B and hemolytic anemia. (Put him on the pedigree above.) Explain how this could happen by drawing a diagram of meiosis in individual II-1. Include drawings of boch chromosome 9 and the sex chromosomes ( X and Y ) .

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
