The presentation provides an overview of elder mediation and the research being conducted to determine what training is needed for mediators in British Columbia who mediate elder disputes. The research examines definitions of elder mediation, concerns that have been raised about mediating elder issues, methodology used in the study, and some initial results. Key findings so far indicate mediators may face challenges with multi-party mediations, cognitive issues, power imbalances, and abuse, and specialized training is needed in areas like pre-mediation meetings and screening for abuse.
