Mumbai: TheBJP’sen-
forcer, Union Home
Minister Amit Shah’s
proposed Mumbai visit
on September 05 is ex-
pected to provide the
impetus to resolve any
lingering discord with-
in the Chief Minister
Eknath Shinde led alli-
ance government with
Deputy Chief Minister
Devendra Fadnavis’
party
.
While Shah’s official
schedule seeks to limit
the visit to seeking di-
vine blessings, Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi’spoliticaltrouble-
shooter will likely re-
solve any residual has-
sles remaining in the
second phase expan-
sion for cabinet induc-
tions of MLAs into the
Maharashtra Council
of Ministers.
During the first ex-
pansion (of 18 new min-
isters on August 08), the
BJPhighcommandhad
given in to compulsions
of coalition politics,
conceding to not only
CM Shinde’s pick of
nine new cabinet col-
leagues but also allow-
ing Dy CM Fadnavis of
the BJP a free hand to
leverage his political
authority over the par-
tyinMaharashtra.This
was notwithstanding a
high command’s initial
directive (of limiting
new inductions to 13 on
August 03) of a lean
cabinet in the first go.
A person familiar
with the development
hadthensaid,“TheBJP
top leadership had
sought a lean team
whichalongwithanem-
phasisonyouth,women
and untainted MLAs. It
had also advised due
representation to SC/
ST, other backward
castes (OBC) along with
urban Gujarati and
Marathi candidates,
which did not take pace
in toto. The backdrop of
thepoliticalsetbacksuf-
fered in Bihar also
played a role in the
BJP’s decision to con-
cedetoregionalimpera-
tives in Maharashtra.”
With discontent
brewing, predominant-
lyamongtheremaining
41 MLAs (both rebel
Shiv Sena and inde-
pendents) in CM Shin-
de’s political formation
still to crystalise into a
single political entity,
meeting expectations
of all ministerial aspir-
ants had scuttled the
BJP high command’s
plans.
“On the other hand,
ninenewBJPministers
also missed out on di-
rectives by the party
leadership, especially
onaspectsof urbanrep-
resentation keeping in
mind the forthcoming
civic elections across 23
municipalities in Ma-
harashtra. Another big
cabinet expansion (tak-
ingittothefullstrength
of 44-odd ministers)
may follow during 10
days of the Ganesh
Chhaturti festival that
begins August 31 .
Shah’s visit will help
iron out wrinkles re-
maining over the cabi-
net expansion plan if, it
is not accomplished be-
fore his Mumbai visit,”
a senior BJP leader
said.
According to the
leader, “All eyes are fo-
cused on the Supreme
Court hearing before a
constitution bench,
which is scheduled for
Monday, and how the
judiciary views the le-
gitimacy of the Eknath
Shinde faction that is
ruling Maharashtra.
On the cabinet front the
remaining deficiencies
(read: urban, youth and
women’s representa-
tion) will be resolved.

Phase 2 of Maha cabinet expansion
All eyes are focused on the Supreme

Maha announces separate lane on
Mumbai-Pune E-way for Ganesh festival
First India Bureau
Mumbai: Chief Minis-
ter Eknath Shinde on
Sunday directed the
state administration to
create a separate lane
at the toll plazas on the
Mumbai-Pune Ex-

cles heading to the 10-
day Ganesh festival,
which begins on Au-

A statement from
the chief minister’s of-
fice said the decision
was taken to ease the

the highway followed a
visit by Shinde to the
Khalapur toll plaza. He
took the decision after
meeting officials there,
it added.
CM Shinde has also
asked for increased
manpower to prevent
traffic congestion and
rush at toll plazas dur-
ing the festivals and
holidays, and directed
the authorities to
strengthen the CCTV
system to prevent ac-
cidents and ensure se-
curity on the express-

.
On Friday, the Ma-
harashtra government

ways as well as toll pla-
zas of other Public
Works Department
(PWD) roads from Au-
gust 27 to September
11 in view of Ganesh

The move was aimed
at providing a relief to
Ganpati devotees trav-
elling from different
parts of the state to the
coastal Konkan belt of
the state.
CM Shinde has
also asked for
increased manpower
to prevent traffic
congestion and

directed the authori-
ties to strengthen
the CCTV system to
prevent accidents
and ensure security

New Delhi: BJP is repeating
govts in Gujarat and HP with
a thumping majority, as per
an assessment of Bharat24,
fastest growing Hindi news
channel. In both states, govts
will repeat on face of PM
Narendra Modi and strategy
of HM Amit
Shah. Even on
Sunday, a huge
crowd reached
events of Modi
 Shah in
Gujarat. In Guj,
BJP is expected to get 109
seats, Cong 68, remaining
5 may go to independents
and other parties. This means
there is no chance for AAP in
Guj. However, commenting
on these possible results in
Guj, a political observer said,
“Guj has a general perception
of clean sweep of BJP with
130 to 135 seats.” Now, it
will only be clear on counting
day that which assessment
proves to be correct. In HP,
BJP is likely to get 45 seats,
Cong 21 seats, Independents
and other parties may get 3
seats. Assembly polls may be

Mumbai: The Shiv
Sena on Sunday ques-
tioned the silence of
Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi and
Union Home Minister
Amit Shah on the re-
lease of 11 convicts in
the Bilkis Bano case
and also asked if fe-
licitation of rapists
was “Hindu culture”.
The comments were
made in Rokhthok col-
umn of the Sena
mouthpiece ‘Saamana’,
which carried the ‘Ka-
daknath Mumbaikar’
byline and not of the
Marathi daily’s execu-
tive editor Sanjay Raut,
who is currently in jail
on money laundering
charges.
Why are Modi and
Shah quiet on this is-
sue? Just because
Bilkis Bano is a Mus-
lim, the crime against
her cannot be forgiven,
it said.
“It is not a Hin-
du-Muslim issue, but a
matter of the soul of
Hindutva and prestige
of our great culture,”
the Sena said.
“When the PM visits
Gujarat, he should visit
her (Bilkis Bano) and
extended his support,”
it said.
Bilkis Bano was five
months pregnant when
she was gang-raped
while fleeing the riots
which broke out after
the Godhra train burn-
ing in 2002. Her three-
year-old daughter was
among the seven killed.
The 11 men convict-
ed in the case walked
out of the Godhra sub-
jail on August 15 after
the Gujarat govern-
ment allowed their re-
lease under its remis-
sion policy. They had
completed more than
15 years in jail. Some
reports had claimed
that they were felicitat-
ed by local leaders
upon release.
Several organiza-
tions across the coun-
try have protested
against the release of
the convicts by the Gu-
jarat government in
the Bilkis Bano case.
The column in
‘Saamana’ stated that
Nationalist Congress
Party (NCP) president
Sharad Pawar says PM
Modi does not practice
what he preaches. “The
Bilkis case has proven
him right,” it said.
It is surprising that
the convicts were re-
leased when PM Modi
spoke of women em-
powerment in his Inde-
pendence Day speech,
the Marathi publica-
tion said.

Congress will not survive a
‘puppet’ president: Chavan
By Anwarul Haque
New Delhi: Former
Maharashtra chief
minister Prithviraj
Chavan on Sunday
cautioned that the
Congress will not sur-
vive if someone is
made a “puppet presi-
dent“ as the party an-
nounced the schedule
to elect its new chief.
Stating that elections
should be held for all
posts, including the
Congress Working
Committee (CWC),
Chavan who is a mem-
ber of the G-23 dissi-
dent group said the ur-
gent steps are needed to
save the party and the
“backseat driving“ will
not work.
On Ghulam Nabi
Azad’s resignation, he
said, “His resignation
is unfortunate... Elec-
tions are due in Jammu
and Kashmir and
Himachal Pradesh. In
JK a very junior and
outsider (Tariq Ha-
meed Karra) was made
the head of the Politi-
cal Affairs Committee
(PAC) and Azad Saheb
was made a member.
What was the reason
for this? Was this dis-
cussed?,” Chavan
asked.
“There was no need
to humiliate Azad sa-
hib. There was no need
to say that he has no
value,” Chavan said in
an interview.
“On one hand Sonia
Gandhi tried to include
leaders like Ghulam
Nabi Azad and Anand
Sharma in the election
campaign. He was also
given some responsibil-
ity. The people at the
bottom, whom Azad sa-
hib called “coterie”,
did not even listen to
Sonia ji.”
On the issues raised
by Azad in his resigna-
tion letter, he said,
“There are some per-
sonal allegations in
Azad’s resignation let-
ter, I will not say any-
thing on them. The is-
sues raised in the earli-
er letter (of August,
2020) are valid. We stand
by that even today
.”
Azad had on Friday
resigned from the par-
ty’s primary member-
ship and all posts, al-
leging that the Con-
gress leadership was
cheating in the name
of internal elections.
He had also accused
Rahul Gandhi of “im-
mature and childish”
behaviour.
The Congress had
hit back at Azad, accus-
ing him of betraying
the party and said that
“his DNA has been
Modi-fied”.
The Congress Work-
ing Committee on Sun-
day decided to hold the
election for the party’s
full-time president on
October 17.

An important
issue is that if
Rahul Gan-
dhi has said that nei-
ther he, nor anyone
from his family will
be Congress presi-
dent, then why
shouldn’t he be be-
lieved? If they are not
made then another
alternative arrange-
ment will have to be
made. Elections
should be held and
then someone will be-
come the president.
You decide the
date of the
election, who-
ever has to fill the
form will come. Why
are you causing the re-
verse process? You will
confirm the name in
advance and then con-
duct elections, does
this ever happen?
Hold elections, whoev-
er has to fight, will
fight…. If backseat
driving continues, the
party will not be able
to survive.

Nagpur: A simple ap-

card in Maharashtra
changed the lives of
14 people, who were
reported missing by
their families in vari-
ous parts of the coun-

The Aadhaar Seva
Kendra (ASK) in
Mankapur has been in-
strumental in reuniting
persons with disabili-
ties, women, and oth-
ers, with their families
scattered across the
country in the past year.
The centre’s manager
Honorary Captain Anil
Marathe identified cas-
es in which applica-
tions would get rejected
because of issues with
biometrics during the
registration process.
It all started last year
with the application
of an 18-year-old men-
tally challenged man,
whose school needed
his Aadhaar card de-
tails. However, his ap-
plication would get re-
jected each time due to
issues with biometrics,
Marathe said.
Marathe has been

When the boy’s appli-
cation got rejected re-

about his plans.
“We then spoke to the

The leaking roof was

when CBI raided Deputy Chief

Kejriwal also put his national

was “to satisfy one man’s lust for

N
Why commodity prices are
likely to fall further?
ambridge – Big movements in
the prices of oil, minerals,
and agricultural commodi-
ties have been among the
most salient economic devel-
opments of the past couple of
years. The sharp rise in com-
modity prices for much of
this period was virtually im-
possible to miss. A barrel of
Brent crude that sold for $20
in April 2020, during the first
wave of the COVID-19 pan-
demic, fetched a peak of $122
in March 2022, just after Rus-
sia invaded Ukraine.
Oil was not the only com-
modity to experience a price
surge. The price of copper
doubled; wheat more than
doubled; and global indices of
commodity prices almost tri-
pled from April 2020 to March
2022. And these increases are
in dollar terms; prices in eu-
ros,yen,won,orothercurren-
cies rose even more.
Lesswidelynoted,however,
is that the prices of many
commodities fell this sum-
mer. The price of oil de-
creasedbyabout30%between
early June and mid-August.
The politically sensitive price
of gasoline in the United
States fell by 20% over the
same period, from $5 per gal-
lon to $4 per gallon. The over-
all index fell 12%.
Is this dip in commodity
prices just temporary? Or is it
a sign that prices have peaked
and can be expected to decline
further?
Commodity prices are
highly correlated. One reason
is direct microeconomic link-
ages. When the price of oil
rises, wheat producers’ costs
increase (because harvesting
equipment runs on diesel and
fertilizer is made from natu-
ral gas), which puts upward
pressure on grain prices.
Moreover, as the US Feder-
al Reserve and other central
banks tighten monetary poli-
cy
, real interest rates are like-
ly to rise. This will probably
pushdowncommodityprices,
and not just because high real
interest rates make a reces-
sion more likely
. The level of
realinterestratesaffectscom-
modity prices independently
of GDP, both in theory and
empirically
.
The theory of the relation-
ship between real interest
ratesandcommoditypricesis
long-established. The sim-
plest intuition behind the re-
lationship is that the interest
rate is a “cost of carrying”
inventories. An increase in
the interest rate reduces
firms’ demand for holding in-
ventories and therefore low-
ers the commodity price.
Three other mechanisms
operate, in addition to inven-
tories. First, for an exhausti-
ble resource, a rise in the in-
terest rate increases the in-
centive to extract today and
thus expand the available
supply
. Second, for “financial-
ized” commodities, an in-
crease in the interest rate en-
courages institutional inves-
tors to shift out of the com-
modities asset class and into
Treasury bills. Lastly, for a
commodity that is interna-
tionally traded, an increase in
the domestic real interest rate
causes a real appreciation of
the domestic currency
, which
works to lower the domestic-
currency price of the com-
modity
.
Econometric analyses have
demonstrated the statistical
relationship between real in-
terest rates and commodity
prices. These include simple
correlations; regressions that
control for other important
determinants, such as GDP
and inventories in a “carry
trade” model; and high-fre-
quency event studies that are
much less sensitive to the
econometric problems of the
regressions.
Two episodes illustrate
that the effect of real interest
rates on commodity prices
operates independently of
the GDP effect. Neither the
spike in dollar commodity
prices in the first half of 2008
nor the decline in 2014-15 can
be explained by fluctuations
in economic activity. They
can instead be interpreted as
the result, respectively, of
loose US monetary policy
(quantitative easing) and a
tightening of US monetary
policy with the end of QE.

to convince him are still
going on. Meanwhile,

Global market trends, macro data to guide domestic stocks
New Delhi (PTI): Trading
in the domestic stock mar-
ket would be influenced by
trends in the global equi-
ties, macroeconomic data
and foreign fund move-
ment in a holiday-short-
ened week, analysts said.
Markets may face vola-
tile trends on Monday after
Federal Reserve Chair Je-
rome Powell’s speech at the
Fed’s annual economic
symposium in Jackson
Hole on Friday
.
“Powell sounded ultra
hawkishinhisbrief speech
at Jackson Hole. Markets
will be concerned about the
tight monetary conditions
persisting longer than ex-
pected. The near-term im-
pact on equity markets will
be negative,” V K Vijayaku-
mar, Chief Investment
Strategist at Geojit Finan-
cial Services, said.
“The direction of global
markets will be the domi-
nant factor for this week
while on the domestic
front, India’s GDP num-
ber and August auto sales
numbers will be impor-
tant factors. Apart from
this, the market will also
have an eye on the move-
ment of crude oil prices,
the dollar index, and the
US bond yields,” Santosh
Meena, Head of Research,
Swastika Investmart
Ltd, said.
The Purchasing Manag-
ers’ Index (PMI) data
for the manufacturing
sector, scheduled to be an-
nounced on Thursday,
would also influence trad-
ing, analysts said.
“This week is a holiday-
shortened one and it marks
the beginning of the new
month also so, participants
will be eyeing important
data like auto sales num-
bers. Amid all, the perfor-
mance of the global indices
especially the US would
remain on the radar for
cues,” Ajit Mishra, VP - Re-
search, Religare Broking
Ltd, said.
The investment pattern
of Foreign Institutional In-
vestors (FIIs) and the ru-
pee-dollar trends would
also continue to drive mar-
kets. Last week, the Sensex
tumbled 812.28 points or
1.36%, while the Nifty lost
199.55 points or 1.12%.

Financial inclusion big step
towards growth: Nirmala
FINANCE MINISTER SAYS
New Delhi (PTI): Finan-
cial inclusion is a major
step towards inclusive
growth which ensures the
overall economic develop-
ment of the marginalised
sections of the society, Fi-
nance Min Nirmala Sithar-
aman said on Sunday
.
The success of the Prad-

jana (PMJDY) since August
28, 2014 is reflected in terms
of opening of over 46 crore
bank accounts with deposit
balance of `1.74 lakh crore
with its expanded coverage
to 67% rural or semi-urban
areas as well as 56% of
women Jan Dhan account
holders, she said on the
eighth anniversary of the
flagship financial inclu-
sion scheme.
Continuation of PM-
JDY beyond 2018 saw a
marked shift in approach
to meet challenges and re-
quirements of the emerg-
ing FI (financial inclusion)
landscape in the country
.
There has been a shift
in focus from 'every house-
hold' to 'every adult', with
added emphasis on usage
of accounts by enhancing
Direct Benefit Transfer
(DBT) flows through these
accounts, promoting digi-
tal payments through the
use of RuPay cards, etc, an
official statement quoted.
The underlying pillars
of PMJDY -- namely, bank-
ing the unbanked, securing
the unsecured and funding
the unfunded -- has made it
possible to adopt multi-
stakeholders' collaborative
approach while leveraging
technology for serving the
unserved and underserved
areas as well, she observed.
She also said the JAM
(Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mo-
bile) pipeline created
through account holders'
consent-based linking of
bank accounts with Aad-
har and mobile numbers of
the account holders, which
is one of the important pil-
lars of the financial inclu-
sion ecosystem, has ena-
bled instant DBT under
various government wel-
fare schemes to the eligible
beneficiaries.

Earlier, CIDCO had
completed the construc-

PMAY—in just 96 days.
The complex in Baman-

“CIDCO has set an

The casting of 500

‘MVA took good decision to
sell wine in supermarkets,
but it wasn’t implemented’
First India Bureau
Pune: Nationalist
Congress Party
(NCP) chief Sharad
Pawar on Sunday
said the Maha Vikas
Aghadi (MVA) gov-
ernment had taken
a good decision to
sell wine in super-
markets in a bid to
boost fruit-based
wineries, but for
some reasons it was
not implemented.
Pawar was speaking
ataconferencehereon
grapes organized by
the Maharashtra Ra-
jya Draksha Bagaitdar
Sangh (MRDBS), an
umbrella body of
grape farmers.
He also said he will
hold talks with the
state and central gov-
ernments on how to
promote the grapes
market.
In January of this
year, the previous
MVA government, of
which the NCP was a
constituent, allowed
the sale of wine in su-
permarkets and walk-
in stores across Ma-
harashtra. A minis-
ter had then said the
decision was taken to
boost fruit-based win-
eries, which provide
additional income to
farmers.
Later, a social work-
er filed a public inter-
est litigation (PIL) in
the Bombay High
Court to challenge the
decision, claiming
that it would under-
mine the goal of de-
glamorizing alcohol
consumption and al-
low people to buy alco-
hol on their own with-
out supervision.
Pawar also raised
concern over farmer
suicides in the state
and said people need
to come together to
think and prevent it.
“It is utterly heart-
wrenching. If the
economy is not in or-
der, farmers opt for
ending their life. We
should think togeth-
er to prevent such a
situation,” he said.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar also said he
will hold talks with the state and
central governments on how to
promote the grapes market

Mumbai: BJP leader
Mohit Kamboj on
Sunday once again
targeted NCP MLA
Rohit Pawar through
a series of tweets, al-
leging links between
him and Rakesh Wad-
hwan, who is accused
in the PMC Bank
scam case.
Pawar, the MLA from
Karjat-Jamkhed assem-
bly constituency and a
grand nephew of NCP
chief Sharad Pawar,
has rubbished the
claims.
“When I do get such
queries (notices or
calls) from the ED (En-

I will provide them with
the necessary informa-
tion,” he said.

In subsequent tweets

said a 21-year-old entre-
preneur had launched a

port of 200 products
ranging including plas-
tics, diamonds and gold,
through the platform of
Green Acres Resorts.
“Request Guiness Book

He tweeted that from
2007 to 2012, the Maha-
rashtra State Co-opera-
tive Bank had lost
Rs1000 crore, but the
same bank gave a loan
worth crores of rupees
to a sugar mill. “When
the sugar mill could not
pay up in 2012, the mill
was auctioned, and Bar-
amati Agro made a car-
tel to purchase it for
just Rs50 crore,” he al-
leged. Rohit Pawar is
the CEO of Baramati
Agro Ltd.
Earlier, on August 16,
Kamboj had threatened
to expose a “big NCP
leader” and demanded
a reinvestigation into
the irrigation scam. On
August 22, he tweeted
that he was studying
the business model of
Baramati Agro Ltd as a

.
Persons in the ED,
who are familiar with
the issue, confirmed
that the agency had had
launched a preliminary
enquiry based on a com-
plaint involving some
transactions of Green
Acres Resorts and Real-
tors Pvt. Ltd.
The complaint al-
leged links between Ro-
hit Pawar and Rakesh
and Sarang Wadhwan.
Pawar was a director of
the company from 2006
to 2012. Three other di-
rectors of the company
were close associates of

FROM BATHROOMS
FROM BATHROOMS
TO GLAMOUR ROOMS
TO GLAMOUR ROOMS
n the last few
years, we have
seen a great
change in the
design and
conceptualisa-
tion of The
Bathrooms.
From being just a
functional space to
one that is central to a
home, in terms of
style and well-being.
Two decades ago the
bath was an after-
thought tucked into a
part of the house that
could not be used to
put to better use and
had no distinction. At
that time, it was the
plumber who ‘de-
signed’ the space and
helped to make choic-
es out of a well-
thumbed catalogue.
Often the space was
shared, and small and
the objective was to
get in and out quickly.
Today the story is
very different. While
the rest of the home
has become open-plan
to suit modern socia-
ble lifestyles, the
bathroom has become
an even more private
space, offering an es-
cape from the habitat
of life. It is now more
focused on personal
wellness. Everything
in our lives has be-
come so busy that we
are always looking for
a place to do some-
thing for ourselves,
and the bathrooms.
To enhance the
comfort, luxury and
design of the toilets
many brands have
tied up with renowned
designers to design an
exclusive range of
sanitaryware and
bathroom fittings to
give that plush feel.
While luxury is of-
ten associated with
large bathrooms,
there Is a growing fo-
cus on creating small
bathrooms that feel
equally escapist. In
small spaces, it’s the
materials and fixtures
that give you a chance
to ramp up the sophis-
tication. Large format
stone and marble
slabs with few joints
are the designer’s
choice along with a
material palette of
metals, paintings,
mirrors, lighting pen-
dants and other hand-
crafted articles to en-
hance the overall am-
bience of the space.
Finishes can com-
pletely change the
character of a prod-
uct, from polished
brass and copper
which work beauti-
fully with marble for
a super luxe look to
the use of terracotta
or metallic tiles to
give it a rustic and
raw appeal.
The architects and
designers create these
state-of-the-art luxury
bathrooms keeping in
mind the client brief,
requirements and
budget transforming
the bathrooms into
glamour rooms.

  • 1. BJP’s enforcer Amit Shah to visit Mumbai, aid cabinet plan after Ganesh darshan Renni Abraham & Satish Nandgaonkar Mumbai: TheBJP’sen- forcer, Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s proposed Mumbai visit on September 05 is ex- pected to provide the impetus to resolve any lingering discord with- in the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde led alli- ance government with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ party . While Shah’s official schedule seeks to limit the visit to seeking di- vine blessings, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’spoliticaltrouble- shooter will likely re- solve any residual has- sles remaining in the second phase expan- sion for cabinet induc- tions of MLAs into the Maharashtra Council of Ministers. During the first ex- pansion (of 18 new min- isters on August 08), the BJPhighcommandhad given in to compulsions of coalition politics, conceding to not only CM Shinde’s pick of nine new cabinet col- leagues but also allow- ing Dy CM Fadnavis of the BJP a free hand to leverage his political authority over the par- tyinMaharashtra. This was notwithstanding a high command’s initial directive (of limiting new inductions to 13 on August 03) of a lean cabinet in the first go. A person familiar with the development hadthensaid,“TheBJP top leadership had sought a lean team whichalongwithanem- phasisonyouth, women and untainted MLAs. It had also advised due representation to SC/ ST, other backward castes (OBC) along with urban Gujarati and Marathi candidates, which did not take pace in toto. The backdrop of thepoliticalsetbacksuf- fered in Bihar also played a role in the BJP’s decision to con- cedetoregionalimpera- tives in Maharashtra.” With discontent brewing, predominant- lyamongtheremaining 41 MLAs (both rebel Shiv Sena and inde- pendents) in CM Shin- de’s political formation still to crystalise into a single political entity, meeting expectations of all ministerial aspir- ants had scuttled the BJP high command’s plans. “On the other hand, ninenewBJPministers also missed out on di- rectives by the party leadership, especially onaspectsof urbanrep- resentation keeping in mind the forthcoming civic elections across 23 municipalities in Ma- harashtra. Another big cabinet expansion (tak- ingittothefullstrength of 44-odd ministers) may follow during 10 days of the Ganesh Chhaturti festival that begins August 31 . Shah’s visit will help iron out wrinkles re- maining over the cabi- net expansion plan if, it is not accomplished be- fore his Mumbai visit,” a senior BJP leader said. According to the leader, “All eyes are fo- cused on the Supreme Court hearing before a constitution bench, which is scheduled for Monday, and how the judiciary views the le- gitimacy of the Eknath Shinde faction that is ruling Maharashtra. On the cabinet front the remaining deficiencies (read: urban, youth and women’s representa- tion) will be resolved. Anyexistingdissidence of not being accommo- datedinthecabinetwill be neutralized through appointments to state body’s with minister of state rank for the rebel Sena MLAs.” Union Home Minister to offer prayers at Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh Mandal before tackling hassles of Phase 2 of Maha cabinet expansion All eyes are focused on the Supreme Court hearing before a constitution bench, which is scheduled for Monday, and how the judiciary views the legitimacy of the Eknath Shinde faction that is ruling Maharashtra. On the cabinet front the remaining deficiencies (read: urban, youth and women’s representation) will be resolved. Any existing dissidence of not being accommodated in the cabinet will be neutralized through appointments to state body’s with minister of state rank for the rebel Sena MLAs. —Senior BJP leader Amit Shah Maha announces separate lane on Mumbai-Pune E-way for Ganesh festival First India Bureau Mumbai: Chief Minis- ter Eknath Shinde on Sunday directed the state administration to create a separate lane at the toll plazas on the Mumbai-Pune Ex- pressway for the vehi- cles heading to the 10- day Ganesh festival, which begins on Au- gust 31. A statement from the chief minister’s of- fice said the decision was taken to ease the movement of traffic on the highway followed a visit by Shinde to the Khalapur toll plaza. The comments were made in Rokhthok col- umn of the Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, which carried the ‘Ka- daknath Mumbaikar’ byline and not of the Marathi daily’s execu- tive editor Sanjay Raut, who is currently in jail on money laundering charges. Why are Modi and Shah quiet on this is- sue? Just because Bilkis Bano is a Mus- lim, the crime against her cannot be forgiven, it said. “It is not a Hin- du-Muslim issue, but a matter of the soul of Hindutva and prestige of our great culture,” the Sena said. “When the PM visits Gujarat, he should visit her (Bilkis Bano) and extended his support,” it said. Bilkis Bano was five months pregnant when she was gang-raped while fleeing the riots which broke out after the Godhra train burn- ing in 2002. Her three- year-old daughter was among the seven killed. The 11 men convict- ed in the case walked out of the Godhra sub- jail on August 15 after the Gujarat govern- ment allowed their re- lease under its remis- sion policy. They had completed more than 15 years in jail. Some reports had claimed that they were felicitat- ed by local leaders upon release. Several organiza- tions across the coun- try have protested against the release of the convicts by the Gu- jarat government in the Bilkis Bano case. The column in ‘Saamana’ stated that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar says PM Modi does not practice what he preaches. “The Bilkis case has proven him right,” it said. It is surprising that the convicts were re- leased when PM Modi spoke of women em- powerment in his Inde- pendence Day speech, the Marathi publica- tion said. The exterior of the structure, considered the 12th Jyotirlinga (special shrine dedicat- ed to Lord Shiva), is built using red basalt rock,whilethe“shikha- ra“(spire)of thetemple has a lime coating, Mis- ra said. The “shikhara“ rises as a single tower withspiresof diminish- ing sizes, and the lower- most band has sculp- turesof dancingfigures carved on it. “The work will com- mence after the mon- soon season and will be carried out over a peri- od of two months. The upper portion of the temple has blackened a little and plaster con- solidation of this layer will be done along with restoration of sculp- tures,” Misra said, add- ing that the ASI re- stored the interiors of the temple last year. The temple was de- stroyed and rebuilt several times during the Mughal-Maratha conflict. Stating that elections should be held for all posts, including the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Chavan who is a mem- ber of the G-23 dissi- dent group said the ur- gent steps are needed to save the party and the “backseat driving“ will not work. In JK a very junior and outsider (Tariq Ha- meed Karra) was made the head of the Politi- cal Affairs Committee (PAC) and Azad Saheb was made a member. What was the reason for this? Was this dis- cussed?,” Chavan asked. “There was no need to humiliate Azad sa- hib. There was no need to say that he has no value,” Chavan said in an interview. “On one hand Sonia Gandhi tried to include leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma in the election campaign. He was also given some responsibil- ity. The people at the bottom, whom Azad sa- hib called “coterie”, did not even listen to Sonia ji.” On the issues raised by Azad in his resigna- tion letter, he said, “There are some per- sonal allegations in Azad’s resignation let- ter, I will not say any- thing on them. The is- sues raised in the earli- er letter (of August, 2020) are valid. We stand by that even today .” Azad had on Friday resigned from the par- ty’s primary member- ship and all posts, al- leging that the Con- gress leadership was cheating in the name of internal elections. Aadhaar centre helps 14 peoplereunitewithfamily Charles Salve Nagpur: A simple ap- plication for Aadhaar card in Maharashtra changed the lives of 14 people, who were reported missing by their families in vari- ous parts of the coun- try years ago. The Aadhaar Seva Kendra (ASK) in Mankapur has been in- strumental in reuniting persons with disabili- ties, women, and oth- ers, with their families scattered across the country in the past year. The centre’s manager Honorary Captain Anil Marathe identified cas- es in which applica- tions would get rejected because of issues with biometrics during the registration process. It all started last year with the application of an 18-year-old men- tally challenged man, whose school needed his Aadhaar card de- tails. However, his ap- plication would get re- jected each time due to issues with biometrics, Marathe said. Marathe has been making a special effort, with the help of the UIDAI technical centre in Bengaluru and the regional office in Mum- bai, to get Aadhaar de- tails of persons report- ed missing based on their biometric data. The boy was found at a railway station when he was eight years old and was looked after by an orphanage and later by one Samarth Damle, who got him admitted to a school, he said. When the boy’s appli- cation got rejected re- peatedly, Damle ap- proached the centre in Mankapur and found that his Aadhaar regis- trationhadalreadybeen done in 2011, before he was reported missing. “Investigations re- vealed that the boy, Mo- hammed Aamir, had gone missing from his home in Jabalpur. The over 100 feet towers with 40 floorseachwerebuiltinviola- tion of building construction laws with the alleged conniv- anceof someNOIDAofficials. The gap between the two tow- ers was only 16 metres. It took nine years for the Residents’ Welfare Associa- tion (RWA) to win the legal battle against the developers after they filed a case in the AllahabadHighCourtin2012. After the high court ordered demolition of the twin towers in 2014, the developer sought relief from the Supreme Court which upheld the dem- olition order in 2021 and also ordered for buyers’ money to be refunded with interest. The demolition of the tall structures, India’s first, was a sight to watch. Carried out with complete technical effi- ciency, it met all safety pa- rameters. Even the dust clouds that arose from the site did not disturb the air quality level. Nor did the im- plosion cause much collater- al damage. At the root of the problem, however, was corruption along with the alleged com- plicity of NOIDA officials. The sharp rise in com- modity prices for much of this period was virtually im- possible to miss. A barrel of Brent crude that sold for $20 in April 2020, during the first wave of the COVID-19 pan- demic, fetched a peak of $122 in March 2022, just after Rus- sia invaded Ukraine. Oil was not the only com- modity to experience a price surge. The price of copper doubled; wheat more than doubled; and global indices of commodity prices almost tri- pled from April 2020 to March 2022. And these increases are in dollar terms; prices in eu- ros,yen,won,orothercurren- cies rose even more. Lesswidelynoted, however, is that the prices of many commodities fell this sum- mer. The price of oil de- creasedbyabout30%between early June and mid-August. The politically sensitive price of gasoline in the United States fell by 20% over the same period, from $5 per gal- lon to $4 per gallon. The over- all index fell 12%. Is this dip in commodity prices just temporary? Or is it a sign that prices have peaked and can be expected to decline further? Commodity prices are highly correlated. One reason is direct microeconomic link- ages. When the price of oil rises, wheat producers’ costs increase (because harvesting equipment runs on diesel and fertilizer is made from natu- ral gas), which puts upward pressure on grain prices. Moreover, as the US Feder- al Reserve and other central banks tighten monetary poli- cy , real interest rates are like- ly to rise. This will probably pushdowncommodityprices, and not just because high real interest rates make a reces- sion more likely . The level of realinterestratesaffectscom- modity prices independently of GDP, both in theory and empirically . The theory of the relation- ship between real interest ratesandcommoditypricesis long-established. The sim- plest intuition behind the re- lationship is that the interest rate is a “cost of carrying” inventories. An increase in the interest rate reduces firms’ demand for holding in- ventories and therefore low- ers the commodity price. Three other mechanisms operate, in addition to inven- tories. First, for an exhausti- ble resource, a rise in the in- terest rate increases the in- centive to extract today and thus expand the available supply . Second, for “financial- ized” commodities, an in- crease in the interest rate en- courages institutional inves- tors to shift out of the com- modities asset class and into Treasury bills. Lastly, for a commodity that is interna- tionally traded, an increase in the domestic real interest rate causes a real appreciation of the domestic currency , which works to lower the domestic- currency price of the com- modity . Econometric analyses have demonstrated the statistical relationship between real in- terest rates and commodity prices. These include simple correlations; regressions that control for other important determinants, such as GDP and inventories in a “carry trade” model; and high-fre- quency event studies that are much less sensitive to the econometric problems of the regressions. Two episodes illustrate that the effect of real interest rates on commodity prices operates independently of the GDP effect. Neither the spike in dollar commodity prices in the first half of 2008 nor the decline in 2014-15 can be explained by fluctuations in economic activity. They can instead be interpreted as the result, respectively, of loose US monetary policy (quantitative easing) and a tightening of US monetary policy with the end of QE. A minis- ter had then said the decision was taken to boost fruit-based win- eries, which provide additional income to farmers. Later, a social work- er filed a public inter- est litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court to challenge the decision, claiming that it would under- mine the goal of de- glamorizing alcohol consumption and al- low people to buy alco- hol on their own with- out supervision. Pawar also raised concern over farmer suicides in the state and said people need to come together to think and prevent it. “It is utterly heart- wrenching. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva FROM BATHROOMS FROM BATHROOMS TO GLAMOUR ROOMS TO GLAMOUR ROOMS n the last few years, we have seen a great change in the design and conceptualisa- tion of The Bathrooms. From being just a functional space to one that is central to a home, in terms of style and well-being. Two decades ago the bath was an after- thought tucked into a part of the house that could not be used to put to better use and had no distinction. At that time, it was the plumber who ‘de- signed’ the space and helped to make choic- es out of a well- thumbed catalogue. Often the space was shared, and small and the objective was to get in and out quickly. Today the story is very different. While the rest of the home has become open-plan to suit modern socia- ble lifestyles, the bathroom has become an even more private space, offering an es- cape from the habitat of life. It is now more focused on personal wellness. Everything in our lives has be- come so busy that we are always looking for a place to do some- thing for ourselves, and the bathrooms. To enhance the comfort, luxury and design of the toilets many brands have tied up with renowned designers to design an exclusive range of sanitaryware and bathroom fittings to give that plush feel. While luxury is of- ten associated with large bathrooms, there Is a growing fo- cus on creating small bathrooms that feel equally escapist. In small spaces, it’s the materials and fixtures that give you a chance to ramp up the sophis- tication. Large format stone and marble slabs with few joints are the designer’s choice along with a material palette of metals, paintings, mirrors, lighting pen- dants and other hand- crafted articles to en- hance the overall am- bience of the space. Finishes can com- pletely change the character of a prod- uct, from polished brass and copper which work beauti- fully with marble for a super luxe look to the use of terracotta or metallic tiles to give it a rustic and raw appeal. The architects and designers create these state-of-the-art luxury bathrooms keeping in mind the client brief, requirements and budget transforming the bathrooms into glamour rooms.
