Grant takes on Lee personally in the American Civil War with a battle plan to constantly attack. Their first encounter is in the Wilderness, a forested area where the woods catch fire, burning wounded soldiers alive. It is a bloody draw with high casualties on both sides. Next they meet at Spotsylvania, where there is more close-quarters fighting in trenches and rifle pits, resulting in heavy losses over 5 days despite rainy weather. At Cold Harbor, Union soldiers know the attack will be suicidal but they charge anyway, losing over 7,000 men in just one hour. Grant continues pursuing Lee but lays siege to Petersburg instead of further direct assaults. Sherman's March also aims to break Confederate will through total warfare
