Prez Putin says “can hit any target on Earth”
RUSSIA TESTS NEW MISSILE
Moscow: Russian Pres-
ident Vladimir Putin
said on Wednesday that
Russia has successfully
tested the Sarmat inter-
continental ballistic
missile, saying the
weapon capable of car-
rying nuclear charges
will make Kremlin’s en-
emies “think twice.”
The Sarmat -- dubbed
Satan 2 by Western ana-
lysts -- is among Rus-
sia’s next-generation
missiles that Putin has
called “invincible,” and
which also include the
Kinzhal and Avangard
hypersonic missiles.
Last month, Russia
said it used Kinzhal for
the first time in warfare
to strike a target in
Ukraine, where Rus-
sian troops have been
engaged in a special
military operation
since February 24.
“I congratulate you
on the successful
launch of the Sarmat
intercontinental ballis-
tic missile,” Putin
told the army in tele-
vised remarks on
Wednesday
.
“This truly unique
weapon will strengthen
the combat potential of
our armed forces, reli-
ably ensure the security
of Russia from external
threats and make those
who, in the heat of ag-
gressive rhetoric, try to
threaten our country,
think twice,” Putin
said.
Russia’s defence min-
istry said in a statement
the test “successfully”
took place at the
Plesetsk cosmodrome
in northern Russia.
According to the min-
istry, the missile deliv-
ered training warheads
to the Kura test range
of the Kamchatka pen-
insula, in Russia’s Far
East.

RUSSIAN, BELARUSIAN PLAYERS
BARRED FROM WIMBLEDON
London: Wimbledon
organizers announced on
Wednesday that Russian
and Belarusian players will
not be allowed to compete
at this year’s grand slam
following Russia’s inva-
sion of Ukraine. “Given the
profile of The Champi-
onships in the United
Kingdom and around the
world, it is our responsi-
bility to play our part in
the widespread efforts of
Government, industry,
sporting and creative in-
stitutions to limit Russia’s
global influence through
the strongest means
possible,” the All England
Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC)
said in a statement.
“In the circumstances
of such unjustified and
unprecedented military
aggression, it would be
unacceptable for the
Russian regime to derive
any benefits from the
involvement of Russian
or Belarusian players with
The Championships. “It
is therefore our inten-
tion, with deep regret,
to decline entries from
Russian and Belarusian
players to The Champion-
ships 2022,” it added.
The Kremlin said earlier
on Wednesday that a ban
on Russian players taking
part at Wimbledon as a re-
sult of Russia’s invasion of
Ukraine is “unacceptable.”

Gandhinagar: World
Health Organization
(WHO) Director Gener-
al Dr Tedros Ghebreye-
sus on Wednesday said
long-term strategic in-
vestments along with
governmentsupportare
crucial to fostering in-
novation in the field of
traditional medicine.
He also said that
through the growing
AYUSH sector, “India
will go to the whole
world and the whole
world will come to In-
dia”.
Speaking at the Glob-
al AYUSH Investment
and Innovation Summit
at Mahatma Mandir in
state capital Gandhina-
gar, which was inaugu-
rated by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, the
WHO chief underlined
the need to support the
innovation ecosystem
for health in general
and traditional medi-
cine in particular.
Mauritius Prime
Minister Pravind Jug-
nauth, AYUSH Minister
Sarbananda Sonowal
and other dignitaries
were present.
“Going forward, long-
term strategic invest-
ment along with the
government commit-
ment is needed to sup-
port the innovation eco-
system for health in
general and traditional
medicine in particular,”
said Dr Ghebreyesus.
He also stressed that
innovators, industry
and the government
should come forward to
develop traditional
medicine “in a sustain-
able, environmentally
sensitive and equitable
manner”.
“When bringing tra-
ditional medicines to
market, we must make
sure that the communi-
ties which had passed
on this knowledge and
nurtured these tradi-
tional products also
benefit from their devel-
opment, including by
sharing the fruits of in-
tellectual property,”
said Dr Ghebreyesus.
According to him, the
AYUSH sector, which
comprises six Indian
systems of medicine -
Ayurveda, Yoga and Na-
turopathy, Unani, Sid-
dha and Homeopathy -
is “growing significant-
ly by 17% per year since
2014”. The WHO direc-
tor general added that
the AYUSH industry is
projected to reach USD
23 billion by the end of
this year.
“This fast-moving in-
dustry which spans so
many areas, such as di-
etary, well-being and
pharmaceutical, just to
name a few, is attracting
investment from entre-
preneurs and large
m a n u f a c t u r e r s .
Through the AYUSH
sector, India will go to
the whole world and the
whole world will come
to India,” he said.
He congratulated PM
Modi for “giving priori-
ty to a relatively neglect-
ed area of healthcare,”
saying “your champion-
ship will bring a signifi-
cant change in the use
of traditional medi-
cine”.
“I know that the
world’s first Global Cen-
tre for Traditional Med-
icine (GCTM) in Jamna-
gar will be a game-
changer for traditional
medicine,” he added.
Dr Ghebreyesus on
Wednesday also told at-
tendees that he has ac-
cepted PM Modi’s pro-
posal to hold the first
such meeting in Gujarat
next year when WHO
will turn 75.
“Looking forward to
next year, the WHO will
turn 75 while India will
be celebrating the 75th
year of its Independ-
ence. PM Modi had pro-
posed that we should
jointly hold an annual
international meeting
on traditional medicine
in Gujarat,” he said.

Bharuch: After reap-
ing successful cotton
yield this year, farmers
of the Bharuch district
plan to increase the
crop’s cultivation by
sowing it on 20,000 to
50,000 hectares of land.
In 2021-22, the total
planting of cotton in all
three seasons was done
on approximately
2,00,000 hectares of
land.
In June 2021, farmers
had suffered hiccups
due to heavy rainfall
that led to lower yield
in the first round of
crop planting. Bhaskar
Patel, farmer living in
Bhadkodaro village of
Jambusar taluka said,
“I had sown cotton on
25 acres of land last
year. But due to heavy
rains in June, I could
not attend to the crop
for 40 days. That is the
reason why the first
yield was two quintals
per acre. But, in the sec-
ond round of sowing, I
harvested an average
of six to eight quintals
per acre. It fetched me
pricesashighasRs8,000
to Rs10,000 per quintal,
which was the highest
price I have received for
the crop in the recent
past.”
Patel added, “The
third round of crop is
ready for harvest and I
am hoping that it will
fetch me at least Rs8,000
per quintal. Prices
right now are very en-
couraging and next
year I may sow cotton
on more land than this
year.”
Even farmers in
Amod town of Bharuch
district, farmers are
happy with the yield
and price of the cotton
crop. Hitesh Patel of
Shrekothi village told
First India, “In July
2021, the crop was dam-
aged by an outbreak of
disease, but after assis-
tance from the state ag-
riculture department
and scientists, it was
saved. I have harvested
two rounds of the cot-
ton crop and will har-
vest the third round at
the end of this month.”
With 120 acres of
land, Patel plans to in-
crease cotton sowing in
the next season due to
higher prices fetched
for the crop this year.
Farmers in the
Bharuch district re-
ceive timely guidance
from block officers, ag-
riculture department
officers and extension
officers. As a result,
even after facing minor
setbacks in July, farm-
ers have booked profit
from cotton farming,
said Dhavalsinh Raj,
extension officer of
Amod taluka.

Wednesday. Taking to
his Twitter handle, he
posted the results of re-

aspiring candidates of
the community had

same exact marks.
Tagging state Educa-

questioned, “Will you

Jadeja shared details
of successful candi-

written examinations
held last month. He also
shared a page of the re-
sults wherein, 12 candi-
dates have obtained
116.75 marks. “Of these,
10 candidates are from
the Chaudhary commu-
nity,” he said. His state-
ment was enough to
provoke a reaction from
the Chaudhary commu-

.
Members of the com-
munity started ques-
tioning Jadeja, his posts
and even alleged he had
intended to defame one
specific community by
highlighting the marks
secured by a few candi-
dates who have cleared
the exams. After being
trolled for his posts, he
realized that the Chaud-
hary community was
unhappy with him,
which could lead to
caste conflict. There-
fore, the AAP leader has
not only apologized to
the community but also
withdrawn his posts.

are orchestrating such as scam,” Swejal Vyas,

Rajkot: A local court
on Wednesday sen-

in Porbandar Kand-
hal Jadeja to 18
months in jail for es-
caping from police
custody in 2007 follow-

However, Jadeja,
the only NCP MLA in
Gujarat Assembly at
present, will remain

spent 19 months in jail
in this connection af-
ter his re-arrest in
2009, his lawyer said.
Jadeja became a

The court of Chief

held Jadeja guilty for
escaping from police

fining him Rs10,000.
Jadeja was acquitted

Of the total 14 per-
sons accused in Jade-
ja’s escape case, one
died during the pen-

12 others were acquit-
ted by the court. The
court held Jadeja
guilty under section
224 of the IPC (resist-

ful apprehension), his
lawyer Ansh Bharad-
waj said.
“But the MLA will
remain out as he has
already spent 19
months in jail in this
connection after his
arrest in 2009,” he
said.
The court also
granted Jadeja one
month to approach
the higher court for
appeal against its or-

Jadeja was arrested
by the police in the
case of councillor’s
murder. However, he
had escaped from po-

BORIS JOHNSON
CASE OFFERS
A FEW LESSONS IN
DIGNIFIED CONDUCT
hatever one may hold
against the Brits,
their parliamentary
democracy and insti-
tutions are almost
above reproach. Last week Prime
Minister Boris Johnson paid a
fine of 50 pounds for attending his
own surprise birthday party
. He is
the first British PM to have been
penalised for breaking a rule
while in office. This week on Tues-
day he apologised “whole-hearted-
ly” for attending an illegal party
during Covid lockdown. Johnson
told the House that he unknow-
ingly broke the rules and misled
parliament. Opposition MPs de-
manded his resignation but John-
son refused to oblige. Labour
Party leader Keir Starmer called
the apology a “joke”.
The UK PM now faces a crucial
parliamentary vote this Thursday
to decide if he should be subjected
to further investigation for his
“misleading” statements on ‘par-
tygate’. Apparently confident of
winning the vote, Johnson will be
in India on a two-day visit. Irre-
spective of the outcome one must
appreciate the dignified manner
in which British parliamentari-
ans are conducting themselves.
W
ately, bulldozers
have been in use
to stamp the su-
premacy of the
majority commu-
nity around festival time and
before elections. Ram Navmi
processions led to violence in
Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat,
Jharkhand, Rajasthan and
Delhi with the minority com-
munity being held directly
responsible in three of the
states and Delhi. The Ra-
jasthan government handled
the situation with maturity
but at other places bulldozers
werepressedintoactionwith-
out investigating who the real
instigator was. It was hardly
surprising that only one side
bore the brunt. It was also not
surprising that the reason for
bulldozing of tenements was
the illegality of construction.
Why did authorities wake up
to the illegality of construc-
tions only after the clashes
will remain a mystery
.
At least in Delhi the police
said that the Ram Navmi pro-
cession was taken out without
permission. That was a provo-
cation in itself but the MCD
decidedtodemolishstructures
in the Jahangirpuri area.
What’s more the demolition is
believed to have continued un-
tiltwohoursaftertheSupreme
Court stayed the action.
One cannot dispute that il-
legal constructions should be
demolished as they occupy
public land leading to numer-
ous social problems. However,
it is common knowledge that
everywheresquattersbribeof-
ficials for a roof over their
heads and hardly ever illegal
constructions are prevented
from coming up. But to use
bulldozers without following
the due process of law is a
mockery of the criminal jus-
tice system. It also makes the
Constitutionandthejudiciary
irrelevant.Whilewemayhave
a view on what happens in
other countries, we tend to
make light of strife within.

THE DRAGON DEBT TRAP
CHINA IS EMERGING AS THE NEO-
COLONIZER OF THE 21ST CENTURY
arvane ko nahi pata ki jis
shamaa se who lipat raha
hai, wahi usko jalaa kar
raakh kar degi.” Have you
heard of this famous Bolly-
wood line about fatal attrac-
tion of the moth to a flame?
Similar is the case of devel-
oping or poor countries that
are attracted by soft loans
from PRC with the hope of
developing their country’s
infrastructure and to provide
better life to their citizens.
Unfortunately, they are not
aware of this fatal attraction
and the debt trap, they are
unknowingly getting into.
It’s often too late before they
realize their mistake. More
and more countries are fac-
ing financial crisis after be-
ing trapped by the Dragon.
China is the only country
in the world having expan-
sionist policy to control other
countries. However, their in-
tention to dominate other
countries by luring them in
debt has come to the fore only
in the present Xi Ping re-
gime. China’s growing global
footprints and aggression is
shaping the world forum and
now, Chinese power rede-
fines geopolitics and geo-eco-
nomics of the globe.
RISE OF CHINA AS
ECONOMIC POWER
In the 21st Century, China is
playing a pivotal role in the
world economy and contrib-
utes nearly 20% to global
GDP, being just second high-
est after USA. Beijing is also
the world’s largest non-com-
mercial lender, more than the
International Monetary
Fund and the World Bank.
China’s share of bilateral
debt has risen from 45% to
63% last year. Along with
this, 65 % of all the loans dis-
tributed under bilateral rela-
tions in the world have been
distributed by China alone.
DEBT-TRAP
‘Debt-trap diplomacy’  is a
term which describes a cred-
itor country or institution
extending debt to a borrow-
ing nation partially, or solely
to increase the lender’s po-
litical leverage. The creditor
country is said to extend ex-
cessive credit to a debtor
country with the intention of
extracting economic or po-
litical concessions when the
debtor country becomes un-
able to meet its repayment
obligations. Presently, 42
countries have public debt
exposure to China in excess
of 10% of GDP. Poor nations
like the Republic of Djibouti,
Laos, Zambia, Nigeria and
Kyrgyzstan have Chinese
debts amounting to 20% of
their GDP.
China is using its econom-
ic heft by providing huge and
easy loans to developing and
underdeveloped countries
for infrastructure. Chinese
indirectly get access to the
country’s natural resources
through the market. This
leads to the economy of the
country being crippled. Eye-
ing the opportunity, China
demands acquisition of a
strategic asset of the country
to write off the debt in part.
China has taken control of
the strategic port City of
Hambantota in Sri Lanka,
Gwadar port of Pakistan, Le-
kki Deep Sea port in Nigeria,
Port of Sudan, Mombasa
Port in Kenya, Entebbe air-
port of Uganda and many
more. Subsequently, China
indirectly enters the politics
of that country and then
dominates its sovereignty
.
THE FUTURE
TRAPPINGS
The Dragon debt trap may
enhance further in the future
to trap countries like Nepal,
Afghanistan and Maldives in
South Asia. All these coun-
tries are in heavy Chinese
debt. India’s real concern is
growing Chinese presence
and economic instability in
the SAARC nations.
Post Ukraine conflict, Rus-
sia having been isolated from
the world trade by Western
sanctions, may look increas-
ingly towards China to help
them out. Economically weak
Russia, crippled by sanctions
will slowly be sucked into
same debt trap as developing
countries, albeit from a differ-
ent route. Moscow, which is
more beholden to Beijing,
would be drifting away from
India, in case, Sino-Indian
conflictbecomesunavoidable.
IMPLICATIONS
FOR INDIA
The reality is that majority of
smaller nations are increas-
ingly getting lured by Chi-
nese loans for infrastructure
development. Faced with no
other viable alternative, they
are getting trapped into the
Dragon’s debt trap. Pakistan,
Sri Lanka and the Maldives
in its neighbourhood, almost
falling into the ‘Dragon Debt
Trap’ is not a good sign for
India. It’s time for us to act
fast and protect our strategic
backyard from China’s mis-
adventures. The current nar-
rative by the Indian Prime
Minister Narendra Modi of
self-sustainability (At-
manirbhar Bharat) is the

“At 10:45 am, the SC

tain the status quo on
the demolition drive, I

implementation of the
order”, claimed CPIM

“The law and the con-
stitution have been

demolitions. At least
the Supreme Court its
order should not be
bulldozed,” CPIM lead-
er further said.
The North Delhi Mu-
nicipal Corporation
sent nine bulldozers to
remove what it called il-
legal encroachments in
Jahangirpuri. In a let-
ter to the Delhi Police,
North Delhi Municipal
Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh
asked for 400 policemen
to maintain order in the
area, which has been
tense since the violence.
On Wednesday, more
than 1,500 cops and se-

the poorest by destroying homes in Delhi like in Uttar

INDIA SOAKS UP EVERY MAJOR RUSSIAN
OIL VARIETY AS FLOWS PERSIST: REPORT
New Delhi (Agencies): India
is doubling down on Russian
crude oil purchases despite
warnings from the US, snap-
ping up every major grade
from the OPEC+ producer
as its war in Ukraine nears
a third month. State-run oil
refiners are now looking at
privately negotiated deals
instead of buying through
public tenders in order to get
better prices, according to
Indian refinery officials and
traders. India has purchased
everything from flagship
Urals that ships from ports
in the west, to a rare cargo
of ESPO from the Far East,
typically favoured by China.
India has a longstanding
relationship with Russia that
includes weapons buying,
and purchasing of oil adds to
the Kremlin’s coffers while it
tackles financial sanctions.
President Joe Biden last week
told Prime Minister Narendra
Modi that the US was ready to
help India diversify its energy
imports, but self-sanctioning
of Russian crude by some is
making it cheap and alluring.
The meeting between to the
two leaders followed more
pointed commentary from
Biden’s top economic adviser
earlier this month, who said
that the US had warned India
against aligning itself with
Russia. The war has fanned
inflation and driven bench-
mark oil futures above $100
a barrel.

Cairo (Agencies): In-

a cheaper option for
top importer Egypt but
will have to overcome
quality controls set by
the country’s agricul-
ture ministry as well
as higher freight costs.
Last week, Egypt’s
agriculture ministry
announced it had ap-
proved India as a
wheat import origin
but has placed several
conditions including
inspection for pests
prior to export and the
use of only a specific
pesticide, according to
a ministry document

“Just because we

Quality concerns
linked to the fungal
disease Karnal Bunt

ticides have previous-
ly plagued wheat ex-
ports from India, with
some suppliers receiv-
ing complaints a few
years ago. Traders and
government officials

said it had not received
any complaints when
exporting large quan-
tities this year to coun-

tar and others.
Traders also said
freight costs would be

suppliers.

caught the head con-
stables and their jun-
ior constable escort-
ing a liquor-laden
truck into Rajkot. In-
cidentally, all five ac-
cused were posted
with the Rajkot city
crime branch.
Addressing media
persons, Deputy Super-
intendent of Police KT
Kamaria said on
Wednesday, “Two days
ago, a SMC team had
caught a truck caught
near Morbi Bypass,
with 390 cartons of In-
dian Made Foreign Liq-
uor (IMFL). There were
two police constables in
the truck with the driv-
er, another was on a
two-wheeler and the
other with the police
sub-inspector in a car.
During primary
questioning, it came to
the notice of the SMC
that the PSI or the team
had not informed their
seniors about their
haul. Only after record-
ing their statements, a
kidnapping case has
been registered against
the three head consta-
bles and the junior con-
stable.”
In her statement to
the SMC, Police Sub-
Inspector Bhavna
Kachda, explained,
“My colleague Devji
Dharajiya had re-
ceived information
that a truck laden
with IMFL was going
to enter Rajkot city. I
then summoned my
team members Kri-
palsinh, Upendrasinh
and Subhashbhai to
go and check it out.
We reached Aya vil-
lage in Sayla taluka
of Surendranagar
district, with the help
of our informer Sau-
rabh Chandarana.
That is where the
team found a parked
truck filled with the
illegal liquor in an
open plot.”
We decided to bring
the truck back to Rajkot
and so, constables Sub-
hash and Upendrasinh
sat in the driver’s cabin
whereas Kripalsinh
and I drove in the car.
While escorting the
truck on Jamnagar-
Morbi bypass road, a
private vehicle inter-
cepted the truck and a
person named Ranab-
hai Kugasiya seized the
vehicle. The informer
and bootlegger Saurabh
escaped from the spot,
she added.
SUSPICIOUS
First India Bureau
Lunawada: In less
than a day after an in-
cident of honour kill-
ing was reported in
Rajkot, another com-
plaint was filed with
Kothamba police
against a man who
killed his widowed
daughter’s lover. He
has been apprehended
by police for the crime.
According to the
criminal complaint
lodged by Haresh Mach-
hi, the elder brother of
the deceased, Bhagvan-
bhai had gone missing
on the evening of April
02, 2022. “Relatives
searched for him every-
where but could not lo-
cate him. We then filed
a missing complaint
with Kothamba police
in the first week of
April,” he said, in the
First Information Re-
port (FIR).
On April 13, the com-
plainant was informed
about a body that had
been fished out of a
well. It was then sent to
Sayaji Hospital for a
post-mortem. As the
body was heavily de-
composed, identifica-
tion was tough. But, af-
ter Haresh told police
officials that his broth-
er had a steel plate in
his left leg, it was con-
firmed that the body
was Bhagvanbhai. Fo-
rensic evidence con-
cluded that he had not
drowned but had been
hit on the head by a
heavy weapon.
Police began investi-
gating Bhagvanbhai’s
personal life and came
to know that after the
passing of his wife a
year ago, he had found
love in a widow. “Their
relationship did not go
down well with the
woman’s father Vaghab-
hai Parmar. On April
02, Vaghabhai met the
victim in his field and
hit him with either an
iron rod or a heavy
stone and killed him. To
cover up his crime, he
dumped the body in an
abandoned well,” said
PS Vanvi, Deputy Su-
perintendent of Police.
VNSGU cancels exam
after Sem VI Economics
paper leaks hours prior
First India Bureau
Surat: The Veer
Narmad South Guja-
rat University has
cancelled the exami-
nation of  BCom Se-
mester VI on
Wednesday, as the
paper of economics
was leaked.
Students were in-
formed of the decision
an hour after the ex-
amination had begun,
officials said.
Vice-chancellor
Kishore Singh Chavda
told First India, “Our
squad was informed
that the paper was
leaked hours before
the exam. We fact-
checked the claims
and decided to cancel
all the exams as a re-
sult. Appropriate ac-
tion will be taken after
a detailed investiga-
tion into the issue.
Senate mem-
ber Bhavesh Rabari
has alleged that the
question paper leaked
the previous day at a
private class. He said
the management had
been informed but did
not initiate any action
at the time.
Some students have
alleged mismanage-
ment, alleging that the
same question paper
was administered at
the Wadia Women’s
College a day before
their examination.
Ramesh Ramani, a
student, added that
the matter had been
reported to a profes-
sor, but no action was
taken. “This is waste
of our time and study
.
We urge the manage-
ment to take strict ac-
tion against the cul-
prits. If no action will
be taken we will hold
an agitation. Students
are facing a lot of
problems due to fre-
quent cancellations
of exams,” he said,
adding that as many
as 10,000-12,000 stu-
dents will be affected
by the decision.
Girl’s family members beat
up lover’s mother uncle
First India Bureau
Ahmedabad: The
family of a young man
who ran away with
his girlfriend for the
second time paid a
hefty price on Monday.
The youth’s mother
and uncle were at-
tacked with iron pipes
by the girl’s family.
The injured duo got
themselves treated
and filed a complaint
with the Gomtipur
police station. Mahesh
and Pooja (names
changed) live in the
same society with their
families, and two years
ago, the duo had fled.
At that time, Pooja
was a minor, so the
girl’s family lodged a
complaint against Ma-
hesh, and the case is
still going on. She then
returned to Rajasthan
with her mother. But
suddenly, 15 days ago,
she reached Mahesh’s
office, and from there
they fled again. On
Monday, Mahesh’s
mother Rekhaben
was stopped mid-way
on stairs by Pooja’s
mother who inquired
about her daughter.
When Rekhaben
said she had no clue,
Pooja’s mother pulled
Rekhaben’s hair and
started beating her.
Soon, Pooja’s siblings
joined and started
beating Rekhaben with
iron pipes. Hearing
her screams, neigh-
bours rushed to help.
Pooja’s brother then
hit Mahesh’s uncle
with an iron pipe and
fled. Rekhaben and
her brother-in-law first
went for treatment at
Sharda Hospital.

about yourself.
I come from a conservative
background where women
are not allowed to think of
this glamour world. My
mother and sister always
supported me. I have done

z How do you see your-
self 5 years down the
line?
I am a learner and in the
coming 20 years, I will be a
learner as learning never
ends. I am working on my-
self physically
,mentallyand
emotionally I will be con-
tinuing this in future too.

z How did your journey
begin?
My journey started with
Elite miss Rajasthan, giv-
ing an audition and getting
selected. Really grateful to
Gaurav Gaur and the
whole team of Elite Miss
Rajasthan for their im-
mense support.

z What were some of
the battles you
fought and are still
fighting in your
journey?
As we all know that
our society still doesn’t
consider modelling and
acting as a prestigious
work, so I’m fighting
with all these dogmas
and conservative mind-
sets of society but one
thing I learnt. If you
candreamthenyoucan
achieve it. Apart from
all those materialistic
things, one of the
achievements is that I
fought with society and
I overcame my fears.

YOUR
DAY
Horoscope by
Saurabbh Sachdeva
hen I was a
young boy
my father
tried his ut-
most to get
me to play
cricket. Cor-
rection. To get me to
play cricket with him!
He bought me the best
gear money could buy,
gathered a bunch of
workers from his fac-
tory to create a legiti-
mate team, and in the
sprawling lawns of our
home in Jaipur, set up a
field each Sunday, in
hope. In almost desper-
ate anticipation that I,
his SON, would natu-
rally conform to that
age-old cornerstone of
the ‘father-son’ rela-
tionship – sports bond-
ing. How else would it
be proved, to ourselves
and the world at large,
that we were both, al-
beit in our disparate
capacities of eight-
year-old and thirty-six-
year-old – men!
In case you hadn’t
gathered, I was unre-
lenting. When I was sent
to boarding school with
much pride and joy, I
was told by my father in
no uncertain terms, that
they (my parents) were
going beyond their
means to ensure I re-
ceived a first-class edu-
cation at one of the
country’s most regarded
residential schools, and
that I should under no
circumstances, squan-
der that opportunity. I
suppose their efforts
were in vain. There I
was, lodged in this tes-
tosterone-overdosed all-
boys school, where man-
hood was defined and
measured not as
much by individuality
and character, more by
goals and runs scored.
As I followed my pas-
sion for Hindustani
classical music, both vo-
cal and instrumental,
my peers and my father
were left in despair. I
had failed to prove my-
self a MAN, yet again!
Years later, I fell in
love with a beautiful girl
and got married. My
wife and I lived and
worked in Mumbai. We
loved to entertain. We
were house proud. We
hosted many dinner par-
ties. There too, the gen-
der stereotyping contin-
ued. Even in liberated,
cosmopolitan Mumbai,
our guests would be
most surprised if and
when they found out
that – I’d laid the table,
I’d arranged the flowers,
I’d selected the drapes, I
was sipping a white spir-
it! Blasphemy! The final
nail in the coffin was
that I’d cry like a baby if
I watched or read some-
thing that moved me.
I’m simply using my
life as an example to ad-
dress this hypocrisy and
patriarchal DNA of our
society. I realized very
early on in life that there
are deep-rooted, euphe-
mistically called 'tradi-
tional values associated
with the sexes. I've heard
within my own larger
family things said such
as men can't cry, busi-
ness ladies-log ka kaam
nahi hai, a son is a
son, and oh God that
gay is abnormal and
countless other scandal-
ous, morally repugnant
statements. Telling testi-
mony to the fatal misgiv-
ings of generational
gender biases.
And so, now, as a fa-
ther of a five-year-old
daughter, and as an Edu-
cator, I always urge par-
ents that it is vital that
parents, guardians, car-
egivers, and educators
espouse a gender-equal
philosophy. That we
bring up our children in
a gender-free, gender-
equal manner. So that
generations of unfair
gender biases may final-
ly be undone by the new
generation. How can we
do this?
EQUALITY IN PARENTING
SET THE RIGHT
EXAMPLE
Kids follow examples set for
them at home. If they see, first
and foremost, both parents re-
specting each other equally, a
father genuinely respecting
the mother, treating her like
an equal, that is what the child
will imbibe.
THE RIGHT
MESSAGING
Second, parents should always
make it a point to subtly mes-
sage children with a sound,
equal gender morality. This
can be done in several ways,
from selecting books/stories
that champion this cause, to
showing and sharing films
that speak to equal rights.
Also, we often hear parents
tell their daughters, “behave
like a lady”, and to boys, “boys
are naughty, it’s just natural”.
Clichés such as these amplify
the gender divide and promote
negative stereotypes and
should be avoided.
GENUINE
EQUAL
TREATMENT
Most importantly
, however, es-
pecially in families where
there are children of both gen-
ders, they must be treated
equally. You can’t for instance
have a scenario where the
male child is being sent abroad
for higher studies and the girl
child is not being extended
that privilege.
To rid our children of the
atrocities that manifest as a
result of gender biases, suf-
fered in equal measure by men
as well as women, is both our
duty and an opportunity that
we have. Wouldn’t you want
your child to grow up to be ex-
actly what and how they want
to be, free from judgement,
stereotyping, labelling, and
societal indignation? That a
boy could grow up to be the
most prolific Classical Dancer
and be celebrated for it. That
a girl could go on to become a
Fighter Pilot and not be be-
rated for it. We owe it to our
children, to ourselves and to
society, to employ and imple-
ment, a truly gender-equal
parenting ethos.

  • 1. Prez Putin says “can hit any target on Earth” RUSSIA TESTS NEW MISSILE Moscow: Russian Pres- ident Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia has successfully tested the Sarmat inter- continental ballistic missile, saying the weapon capable of car- rying nuclear charges will make Kremlin’s en- emies “think twice.” The Sarmat -- dubbed Satan 2 by Western ana- lysts -- is among Rus- sia’s next-generation missiles that Putin has called “invincible,” and which also include the Kinzhal and Avangard hypersonic missiles. Last month, Russia said it used Kinzhal for the first time in warfare to strike a target in Ukraine, where Rus- sian troops have been engaged in a special military operation since February 24. “I congratulate you on the successful launch of the Sarmat intercontinental ballis- tic missile,” Putin told the army in tele- vised remarks on Wednesday . “This truly unique weapon will strengthen the combat potential of our armed forces, reli- ably ensure the security of Russia from external threats and make those who, in the heat of ag- gressive rhetoric, try to threaten our country, think twice,” Putin said. Russia’s defence min- istry said in a statement the test “successfully” took place at the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia. According to the min- istry, the missile deliv- ered training warheads to the Kura test range of the Kamchatka pen- insula, in Russia’s Far East. I congratulate you on the successful launch of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile: Putin told the army in televised remarks RUSSIAN, BELARUSIAN PLAYERS BARRED FROM WIMBLEDON London: Wimbledon organizers announced on Wednesday that Russian and Belarusian players will not be allowed to compete at this year’s grand slam following Russia’s inva- sion of Ukraine. “Given the profile of The Champi- onships in the United Kingdom and around the world, it is our responsi- bility to play our part in the widespread efforts of Government, industry, sporting and creative in- stitutions to limit Russia’s global influence through the strongest means possible,” the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) said in a statement. “In the circumstances of such unjustified and unprecedented military aggression, it would be unacceptable for the Russian regime to derive any benefits from the involvement of Russian or Belarusian players with The Championships. “It is therefore our inten- tion, with deep regret, to decline entries from Russian and Belarusian players to The Champion- ships 2022,” it added. The Kremlin said earlier on Wednesday that a ban on Russian players taking part at Wimbledon as a re- sult of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is “unacceptable.” AHMEDABAD l THURSDAY, APRIL 21, 2022 l Pages 12 l 3.00 RNI NO. He also said that through the growing AYUSH sector, “India will go to the whole world and the whole world will come to In- dia”. Speaking at the Glob- al AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit at Mahatma Mandir in state capital Gandhina- gar, which was inaugu- rated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the WHO chief underlined the need to support the innovation ecosystem for health in general and traditional medi- cine in particular. Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jug- nauth, AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other dignitaries were present. “Going forward, long- term strategic invest- ment along with the government commit- ment is needed to sup- port the innovation eco- system for health in general and traditional medicine in particular,” said Dr Ghebreyesus. He also stressed that innovators, industry and the government should come forward to develop traditional medicine “in a sustain- able, environmentally sensitive and equitable manner”. “When bringing tra- ditional medicines to market, we must make sure that the communi- ties which had passed on this knowledge and nurtured these tradi- tional products also benefit from their devel- opment, including by sharing the fruits of in- tellectual property,” said Dr Ghebreyesus. According to him, the AYUSH sector, which comprises six Indian systems of medicine - Ayurveda, Yoga and Na- turopathy, Unani, Sid- dha and Homeopathy - is “growing significant- ly by 17% per year since 2014”. The WHO direc- tor general added that the AYUSH industry is projected to reach USD 23 billion by the end of this year. “This fast-moving in- dustry which spans so many areas, such as di- etary, well-being and pharmaceutical, just to name a few, is attracting investment from entre- preneurs and large m a n u f a c t u r e r s . Dr Ghebreyesus on Wednesday also told at- tendees that he has ac- cepted PM Modi’s pro- posal to hold the first such meeting in Gujarat next year when WHO will turn 75. “Looking forward to next year, the WHO will turn 75 while India will be celebrating the 75th year of its Independ- ence. First India Bureau Bharuch: After reap- ing successful cotton yield this year, farmers of the Bharuch district plan to increase the crop’s cultivation by sowing it on 20,000 to 50,000 hectares of land. In 2021-22, the total planting of cotton in all three seasons was done on approximately 2,00,000 hectares of land. In June 2021, farmers had suffered hiccups due to heavy rainfall that led to lower yield in the first round of crop planting. Bhaskar Patel, farmer living in Bhadkodaro village of Jambusar taluka said, “I had sown cotton on 25 acres of land last year. But due to heavy rains in June, I could not attend to the crop for 40 days. That is the reason why the first yield was two quintals per acre. But, in the sec- ond round of sowing, I harvested an average of six to eight quintals per acre. It fetched me pricesashighasRs8,000 to Rs10,000 per quintal, which was the highest price I have received for the crop in the recent past.” Patel added, “The third round of crop is ready for harvest and I am hoping that it will fetch me at least Rs8,000 per quintal. Prices right now are very en- couraging and next year I may sow cotton on more land than this year.” Even farmers in Amod town of Bharuch district, farmers are happy with the yield and price of the cotton crop. Hitesh Patel of Shrekothi village told First India, “In July 2021, the crop was dam- aged by an outbreak of disease, but after assis- tance from the state ag- riculture department and scientists, it was saved. I have harvested two rounds of the cot- ton crop and will har- vest the third round at the end of this month.” With 120 acres of land, Patel plans to in- crease cotton sowing in the next season due to higher prices fetched for the crop this year. Farmers in the Bharuch district re- ceive timely guidance from block officers, ag- riculture department officers and extension officers. As a result, even after facing minor setbacks in July, farm- ers have booked profit from cotton farming, said Dhavalsinh Raj, extension officer of Amod taluka. ‘Government backing, investments needed to support traditional med’ WHO Chief Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus spoke at the Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit at Mahatma Mandir on Wed (L to R) Mauritius PM Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, PM Narendra Modi and WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on Wednesday. TOP TWEETS BORIS JOHNSON CASE OFFERS A FEW LESSONS IN DIGNIFIED CONDUCT hatever one may hold against the Brits, their parliamentary democracy and insti- tutions are almost above reproach. Last week Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid a fine of 50 pounds for attending his own surprise birthday party . He is the first British PM to have been penalised for breaking a rule while in office. This week on Tues- day he apologised “whole-hearted- ly” for attending an illegal party during Covid lockdown. Johnson told the House that he unknow- ingly broke the rules and misled parliament. Opposition MPs de- manded his resignation but John- son refused to oblige. Labour Party leader Keir Starmer called the apology a “joke”. The UK PM now faces a crucial parliamentary vote this Thursday to decide if he should be subjected to further investigation for his “misleading” statements on ‘par- tygate’. Apparently confident of winning the vote, Johnson will be in India on a two-day visit. Irre- spective of the outcome one must appreciate the dignified manner in which British parliamentari- ans are conducting themselves. W ately, bulldozers have been in use to stamp the su- premacy of the majority commu- nity around festival time and before elections. Ram Navmi processions led to violence in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Delhi with the minority com- munity being held directly responsible in three of the states and Delhi. The Ra- jasthan government handled the situation with maturity but at other places bulldozers werepressedintoactionwith- out investigating who the real instigator was. It was hardly surprising that only one side bore the brunt. It was also not surprising that the reason for bulldozing of tenements was the illegality of construction. Why did authorities wake up to the illegality of construc- tions only after the clashes will remain a mystery . At least in Delhi the police said that the Ram Navmi pro- cession was taken out without permission. That was a provo- cation in itself but the MCD decidedtodemolishstructures in the Jahangirpuri area. What’s more the demolition is believed to have continued un- tiltwohoursaftertheSupreme Court stayed the action. One cannot dispute that il- legal constructions should be demolished as they occupy public land leading to numer- ous social problems. However, it is common knowledge that everywheresquattersbribeof- ficials for a roof over their heads and hardly ever illegal constructions are prevented from coming up. But to use bulldozers without following the due process of law is a mockery of the criminal jus- tice system. It also makes the Constitutionandthejudiciary irrelevant.Whilewemayhave a view on what happens in other countries, we tend to make light of strife within. BULLDOZER POLITICS FOR SUPREMACY Ram Navmi processions led to violence in MP, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Delhi with the minority community being held directly responsible in 3 of states and Delhi. Rajasthan government handled situation with maturity but at other places bulldozers were pressed into action without investigating L THE DRAGON DEBT TRAP CHINA IS EMERGING AS THE NEO- COLONIZER OF THE 21ST CENTURY arvane ko nahi pata ki jis shamaa se who lipat raha hai, wahi usko jalaa kar raakh kar degi.” Have you heard of this famous Bolly- wood line about fatal attrac- tion of the moth to a flame? Similar is the case of devel- oping or poor countries that are attracted by soft loans from PRC with the hope of developing their country’s infrastructure and to provide better life to their citizens. Unfortunately, they are not aware of this fatal attraction and the debt trap, they are unknowingly getting into. It’s often too late before they realize their mistake. More and more countries are fac- ing financial crisis after be- ing trapped by the Dragon. China is the only country in the world having expan- sionist policy to control other countries. However, their in- tention to dominate other countries by luring them in debt has come to the fore only in the present Xi Ping re- gime. China’s growing global footprints and aggression is shaping the world forum and now, Chinese power rede- fines geopolitics and geo-eco- nomics of the globe. RISE OF CHINA AS ECONOMIC POWER In the 21st Century, China is playing a pivotal role in the world economy and contrib- utes nearly 20% to global GDP, being just second high- est after USA. Beijing is also the world’s largest non-com- mercial lender, more than the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. China’s share of bilateral debt has risen from 45% to 63% last year. Along with this, 65 % of all the loans dis- tributed under bilateral rela- tions in the world have been distributed by China alone. DEBT-TRAP ‘Debt-trap diplomacy’  is a term which describes a cred- itor country or institution extending debt to a borrow- ing nation partially, or solely to increase the lender’s po- litical leverage. The creditor country is said to extend ex- cessive credit to a debtor country with the intention of extracting economic or po- litical concessions when the debtor country becomes un- able to meet its repayment obligations. Presently, 42 countries have public debt exposure to China in excess of 10% of GDP. Poor nations like the Republic of Djibouti, Laos, Zambia, Nigeria and Kyrgyzstan have Chinese debts amounting to 20% of their GDP. China is using its econom- ic heft by providing huge and easy loans to developing and underdeveloped countries for infrastructure. Chinese indirectly get access to the country’s natural resources through the market. This leads to the economy of the country being crippled. Eye- ing the opportunity, China demands acquisition of a strategic asset of the country to write off the debt in part. China has taken control of the strategic port City of Hambantota in Sri Lanka, Gwadar port of Pakistan, Le- kki Deep Sea port in Nigeria, Port of Sudan, Mombasa Port in Kenya, Entebbe air- port of Uganda and many more. Subsequently, China indirectly enters the politics of that country and then dominates its sovereignty . THE FUTURE TRAPPINGS The Dragon debt trap may enhance further in the future to trap countries like Nepal, Afghanistan and Maldives in South Asia. All these coun- tries are in heavy Chinese debt. India’s real concern is growing Chinese presence and economic instability in the SAARC nations. Post Ukraine conflict, Rus- sia having been isolated from the world trade by Western sanctions, may look increas- ingly towards China to help them out. Economically weak Russia, crippled by sanctions will slowly be sucked into same debt trap as developing countries, albeit from a differ- ent route. Moscow, which is more beholden to Beijing, would be drifting away from India, in case, Sino-Indian conflictbecomesunavoidable. IMPLICATIONS FOR INDIA The reality is that majority of smaller nations are increas- ingly getting lured by Chi- nese loans for infrastructure development. Faced with no other viable alternative, they are getting trapped into the Dragon’s debt trap. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Maldives in its neighbourhood, almost falling into the ‘Dragon Debt Trap’ is not a good sign for India. RAJKOT POLICE COMMISSIONER TAKES ACTION AFTER SMC TEAM CATCHES THEM PSI, 4 OTHERS SUSPENDED FOR SMUGGLING LIQUOR, KIDNAPPING First India Bureau Rajkot: After a com- plaint was filed for smuggling liquor and kidnapping against one police sub-inspec- tor, three head con- stables and one con- stable, the Rajkot po- lice commissioner on Wednesday suspend- ed them all. The State Monitoring Cell (SMC) has reported that their team caught the head con- stables and their jun- ior constable escort- ing a liquor-laden truck into Rajkot. In- cidentally, all five ac- cused were posted with the Rajkot city crime branch. Addressing media persons, Deputy Super- intendent of Police KT Kamaria said on Wednesday, “Two days ago, a SMC team had caught a truck caught near Morbi Bypass, with 390 cartons of In- dian Made Foreign Liq- uor (IMFL). There were two police constables in the truck with the driv- er, another was on a two-wheeler and the other with the police sub-inspector in a car. During primary questioning, it came to the notice of the SMC that the PSI or the team had not informed their seniors about their haul. Only after record- ing their statements, a kidnapping case has been registered against the three head consta- bles and the junior con- stable.” In her statement to the SMC, Police Sub- Inspector Bhavna Kachda, explained, “My colleague Devji Dharajiya had re- ceived information that a truck laden with IMFL was going to enter Rajkot city. I then summoned my team members Kri- palsinh, Upendrasinh and Subhashbhai to go and check it out. We reached Aya vil- lage in Sayla taluka of Surendranagar district, with the help of our informer Sau- rabh Chandarana. That is where the team found a parked truck filled with the illegal liquor in an open plot.” We decided to bring the truck back to Rajkot and so, constables Sub- hash and Upendrasinh sat in the driver’s cabin whereas Kripalsinh and I drove in the car. While escorting the truck on Jamnagar- Morbi bypass road, a private vehicle inter- cepted the truck and a person named Ranab- hai Kugasiya seized the vehicle. The informer and bootlegger Saurabh escaped from the spot, she added. According to the criminal complaint lodged by Haresh Mach- hi, the elder brother of the deceased, Bhagvan- bhai had gone missing on the evening of April 02, 2022. “Relatives searched for him every- where but could not lo- cate him. We then filed a missing complaint with Kothamba police in the first week of April,” he said, in the First Information Re- port (FIR). On April 13, the com- plainant was informed about a body that had been fished out of a well. It was then sent to Sayaji Hospital for a post-mortem. As the body was heavily de- composed, identifica- tion was tough. But, af- ter Haresh told police officials that his broth- er had a steel plate in his left leg, it was con- firmed that the body was Bhagvanbhai. Fo- rensic evidence con- cluded that he had not drowned but had been hit on the head by a heavy weapon. Police began investi- gating Bhagvanbhai’s personal life and came to know that after the passing of his wife a year ago, he had found love in a widow. “Their relationship did not go down well with the woman’s father Vaghab- hai Parmar. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva hen I was a young boy my father tried his ut- most to get me to play cricket. Cor- rection. To get me to play cricket with him! He bought me the best gear money could buy, gathered a bunch of workers from his fac- tory to create a legiti- mate team, and in the sprawling lawns of our home in Jaipur, set up a field each Sunday, in hope. In almost desper- ate anticipation that I, his SON, would natu- rally conform to that age-old cornerstone of the ‘father-son’ rela- tionship – sports bond- ing. How else would it be proved, to ourselves and the world at large, that we were both, al- beit in our disparate capacities of eight- year-old and thirty-six- year-old – men! In case you hadn’t gathered, I was unre- lenting. When I was sent to boarding school with much pride and joy, I was told by my father in no uncertain terms, that they (my parents) were going beyond their means to ensure I re- ceived a first-class edu- cation at one of the country’s most regarded residential schools, and that I should under no circumstances, squan- der that opportunity. I suppose their efforts were in vain. There I was, lodged in this tes- tosterone-overdosed all- boys school, where man- hood was defined and measured not as much by individuality and character, more by goals and runs scored. As I followed my pas- sion for Hindustani classical music, both vo- cal and instrumental, my peers and my father were left in despair. I had failed to prove my- self a MAN, yet again! Years later, I fell in love with a beautiful girl and got married. My wife and I lived and worked in Mumbai. We loved to entertain. We were house proud. We hosted many dinner par- ties. There too, the gen- der stereotyping contin- ued. Even in liberated, cosmopolitan Mumbai, our guests would be most surprised if and when they found out that – I’d laid the table, I’d arranged the flowers, I’d selected the drapes, I was sipping a white spir- it! Blasphemy! The final nail in the coffin was that I’d cry like a baby if I watched or read some- thing that moved me. I’m simply using my life as an example to ad- dress this hypocrisy and patriarchal DNA of our society. I realized very early on in life that there are deep-rooted, euphe- mistically called 'tradi- tional values associated with the sexes. I've heard within my own larger family things said such as men can't cry, busi- ness ladies-log ka kaam nahi hai, a son is a son, and oh God that gay is abnormal and countless other scandal- ous, morally repugnant statements. Telling testi- mony to the fatal misgiv- ings of generational gender biases. And so, now, as a fa- ther of a five-year-old daughter, and as an Edu- cator, I always urge par- ents that it is vital that parents, guardians, car- egivers, and educators espouse a gender-equal philosophy. That we bring up our children in a gender-free, gender- equal manner. So that generations of unfair gender biases may final- ly be undone by the new generation. How can we do this?  EQUALITY IN PARENTING SET THE RIGHT EXAMPLE Kids follow examples set for them at home. If they see, first and foremost, both parents re- specting each other equally, a father genuinely respecting the mother, treating her like an equal, that is what the child will imbibe.  THE RIGHT MESSAGING Second, parents should always make it a point to subtly mes- sage children with a sound, equal gender morality. This can be done in several ways, from selecting books/stories that champion this cause, to showing and sharing films that speak to equal rights. Also, we often hear parents tell their daughters, “behave like a lady”, and to boys, “boys are naughty, it’s just natural”. Clichés such as these amplify the gender divide and promote negative stereotypes and should be avoided. GENUINE EQUAL TREATMENT Most importantly , however, es- pecially in families where there are children of both gen- ders, they must be treated equally. You can’t for instance have a scenario where the male child is being sent abroad for higher studies and the girl child is not being extended that privilege. To rid our children of the atrocities that manifest as a result of gender biases, suf- fered in equal measure by men as well as women, is both our duty and an opportunity that we have. Wouldn’t you want your child to grow up to be ex- actly what and how they want to be, free from judgement, stereotyping, labelling, and societal indignation? That a boy could grow up to be the most prolific Classical Dancer and be celebrated for it. That a girl could go on to become a Fighter Pilot and not be be- rated for it. We owe it to our children, to ourselves and to society, to employ and imple- ment, a truly gender-equal parenting ethos.
