This paper provides an overview of the status of Open Education and Open Science for our global society in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic: It presents practices and uses cases from 12 countries and global regions on the challenges for formal education during the COVID-19 outbreak. A special focus is led on the potential solutions and examples of Open Education and Open Science in these regional use cases. Their analysis and comparison present insights about the developed strategies and implemented practices in the different regions worldwide. And their discussion offers opportunities and recommendations how Open Education and Open Science can innovate and improve formal education in schools, universities and lifelong learning during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as well as afterwards.

Try before you buy?: The changing nature of internships in journalismJanet Fulton
Traditionally, journalism internships have provided employers with a “try before you buy” approach, and studies have shown that, in the past, an internship has provided a pathway into permanent employment. Furthermore, it can also be demonstrated that journalists have found their own internships a valuable experience and provide practical, work-ready skills for navigating the social structure of journalism. Anecdotally, it has been noted by the authors that internships increase students maturity, confidence and leadership skills. Forde and Meadows (2011) found that journalism internship programs, if run with a solid pedagogical foundation, enhance student learning.
The issue of unpaid internships in the media has been in the news again over the last twelve months. Fair Work Australia’s report Experience or Exploitation, released in January 2013, found the media industry to be among the highest in unpaid internships, including print and broadcast journalism, and public relations. In June, 2013, the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) released a statement saying the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) had agreed to work with the MEAA to ensure “unpaid work arrangements throughout the media industry - including unpaid internships for young people - are fair and lawful” (MEAA, 2013). Internationally, similar concerns around internships are unravelling. In the UK, Labour MP Hazel Belars described the growth of unpaid roles ‘a modern day scandal’ and introduced the Internships (Advertising and Regulation) Bill. Part of the attention around the bill resulted from a 2011 FOI request that showed the BBC had used 6000 unpaid interns in the previous four years.
Ongoing, secure employment is increasingly difficult to get in some parts of the media industry and the authors have noted, anecdotally, that organisations seem to be taking advantage of students who are desperate to work in the industry. Many students in journalism programs still want to work for mainstream media organisations and are willing to spend time during their education working in an unpaid capacity. The FWA report surveyed students from the University of Technology Sydney to discover how journalism students viewed internships. However, UTS is a metropolitan university and its students may have a different experience of university than students in other areas. The University of Newcastle (UoN) is a regional university in a one university city and the communication discipline has strong industry ties in the region. Would the internship experience of UoN students differ from the students at UTS?
This paper is based on a survey conducted with students enrolled in the Bachelor of Communication at the University of Newcastle and will discuss internships, focusing on journalism and including recent issues that have been identified, and analyse the Newcastle experience within this context.

What have we achieved?
by Professor Victoria Traynor and Dr Rita Chang
The purpose of this section is to present a
3 years achievement between UOW &
TMU and to create and implement a new
vision for future cooperation.
Background and context
Our collaboration with Taiwan Taipei
Medical University was initiated in 2016 and
since that time meaningful partnerships
have been established (MOUs signed in
2016). This collaboration has multi-
components: research, student and
academic exchanges and a joint PhD,
Master degree. We achieved these
outcomes with funding from a 2017/2019
UIC grant, two mobility grants, a TMU
affiliated hospital grant, recruiting a TMU
Master’s graduate to become a UOW PhD
candidate and in-kind support, including
staff time to work on joint projects. In 2019,
we establish the Taiwanese Australian
Innovation within Ageing Network
(TAIwAN) and continue extend these
international collaborations.
Two-way student exchanges Students
exchange
2018 student mobility program including
inbound and outbound (UOW NCP grant
x3; TMU students x5) and 2019 UOW NCP
grant x5; TMU students x4).
Two-way academic exchanges
In order to a better understanding the others
cultures, developing new pedagogy and
research ideas and building an international
network, two-way academic exchanges has
been established between UOW & TMU.
Three TMU academic as a Visiting Fellow
and co-supervisor of UOW HDR candidate
(TMU-Prof. Chang, Chou & Assist. Prof.
Chen) (UOW-Prof. Moroney).
Joint degrees
Established joint PhD and Master degree
between UOW and TMU (agreements
signed in 2018 & 2019).
Recruited one UOW PhD candidate from
TMU Master’s graduate (commenced
Spring 2018).
Signing ceremony for joint PhD in 2018
Towards the third year of collaboration
2019
There is strong evidence about the value of
collaboration between UOW & TMU sharing
teaching and research activities.
Research activities
A range of research activities have been
under taken between UOW &TMU:

Background and context
Our collaboration with Taiwan Alzheimer Disease
Association (TADA) was initiated in 2016 and since
that time dementia and driving project has been
delivered (MOUs signed in 2017). The TADA is a
member of Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI).
An association with ADI will provide an invaluable
international endorsement of UOW dementia
research outputs. TADA provides UOW with access
to consumers and family carers of individuals living
with a dementia through Integrated dementia care
centres (IDCCs). TADA has 700+ members
(consumers, family carers and transdisciplinary
professionals) and is a highly regarded member of
the ADI.
