A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Letter from the Church Secretary
Dear All,
You will be reading this just as we celebrate another year of
worship and praise to our Lord at Hayes Free Church. How
blessed we have been over the years and I'm sure we will continue
to be. Our Gift Day on Saturday 2nd June is linked in with our
Anniversary on Sunday 3rd June. This will be a weekend of joy and
thanks, with the church open for prayer on Saturday morning from
10a.m. - 12noon. Please give this weekend prayerful thought as
you give a Birthday Gift to our church.
If you are worried about coming on Saturday because you think you
have to pray out loud, worry not. This is a time of quiet and peace,
when you can just come into our beautiful church and pray privately
for however long or short you wish. If you are wondering what to
say in your prayer; this is a time of thanksgiving and also of praying
for the future of our church. God loves each one of us and knows
us, so our prayer is just a conversation with Him.
Each and every prayer our Lord will be pleased to hear, so let us
take this opportunity to add our prayer.
With Christian love to you all,
Mavis

A note from the Editor:
This issue of Catalyst will be published around the time that the
new GDPR regulations come into force on 25th
May and as a result
our church now has a policy (set out in full on pages 9-12). Our
present thinking is that from now on, in most cases, it will only be
possible to print names and other details in Catalyst if those
concerned have given formal permission. This will settle down of
course, but it will take a little time to collect those permissions and
as a result, this issue of Catalyst will contain very few names. In
most cases the contact points for church activities remain the
same, and regular readers will already know these. Otherwise, if
you need to get in touch with the organiser of a church activity, you
can do so by emailing info@hayesfreechurch.com or contacting
me. Thank you and apologies for any inconvenience, Christine

Top of the Pew 2018
Following their first-round victory last month, your team assembled
again only a few weeks later, on 13th
May, to play St Mark’s in
Bromley. The first half saw the lead change hands a couple of
times, and even though Hayes drew slightly ahead, there was a
constant threat to their position - particularly just before the interval
when St Mark’s reduced the deficit from 10 points to 2 over the
space of a single round. In the second half, Hayes maintained their
slight lead, (although more than one round saw equal scores),
before drawing further ahead towards the end. Eventually the final
round, on animals in the Bible, saw Hayes through to a clear
victory, with 76 points to 60. St Mark’s made us very welcome, and
the evening saw much hilarity and good fellowship, with £38.50
raised from refreshments for the Marjorie McClure School. We are
grateful to all who helped to make this such an enjoyable evening,
not least the audience! Please join us for the next match, which will
be at home, and which will see your team in the quarter-finals for
the first time in several years.
And here is a quick quiz to keep all our brains ticking over until the
next contest:
The clues below should lead you to the names of British cities,
towns or counties. The initial letter of each spells out the name of a
Biblical figure. Who is it? (sadly no prizes - answers next month!)
This is the home city of the Guardian newspaper.
The name of this Scottish city means “Mouth of the River
Ness”, where indeed it is situated.
If you are sent here, you will not be able to enjoy any
conversation.
This is what a cockney highwayman might have asked you to
do with your money.
And in My Fair Lady that famous cockney Eliza Doolittle tries
to tell us that in three English counties, a certain
meteorological phenomenon occurs only very rarely. What
letter is she struggling to pronounce?

Ministry of Flowers
Thank you to those involved in the weekly choice and arrangement of flowers
in the church. Thanks go also to those who provide for these displays week
by week.
After the service on Sunday morning, the flowers are distributed in order to
celebrate, or thank, or support, and in all cases to bring further enjoyment.
Besides helping to decorate the church, supplying flowers for a particular
Sunday is an excellent way to mark a special anniversary, or remember a
friend or family member. Please let us know if you would like to help in this.
And speaking of flowers….
The annual Open Garden Festival in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice is
already in full swing. Between mid-May and early September a succession
of people open their gardens to be viewed, usually on Sunday afternoons,
charging a small fee and often offering a
variety of refreshments, plant sales, etc. It
would take too long to list them here
unfortunately but there are a number of
gardens very close to us, including
Ridgeway, George Lane and Goodhart
Way, whilst others are further afield, for
example in Dulwich, Shirley and Petts
Wood. One that is certainly worth a mention
is the Norlands Garden Festival, with seven
gardens open on the same afternoon
(Sunday 10 June 2-5pm) in and around
Norlands Crescent, Chislehurst. An
information leaflet, with all the dates and
times, has been left at the back of the
church.
Saturday 23rd June:
Hayes Horticultural Society summer outing
An outing to RHS Hyde Hall Gardens (Essex).
The cost of £27.00 includes coach travel, entrance, a garden tour, a tea or
coffee and cake. Contact details were given in last month’s Catalyst, but if
you cannot now locate that, please see Christine.

May 2018
Hints and tips and good practice
The URC has provided some useful tips for all of us to bear in mind
if we are dealing in any capacity with the personal contact details of
anyone else in the church. Many of them will have been followed
already.
For example: - respect people’s privacy; don’t give out information
about them without their consent; keep their details safe; use the
“bcc” row if you are sending out emails to a group who may not all
know each others’ contact details; make sure that you only keep
information that you really need – if you don’t need it, dispose of it
securely.
15. - 13 -
There is further advice on good practice, though this is mainly for
the Elders managing the policy as a whole. One point though
applies to us all – it is recommended that the policy is reviewed
periodically, probably annually. So if you discover any point on
which it is not up to date, please let the Elders know so that it can
be amended next time, or earlier if it is urgent. Now that the
deadline of 25th
May is here, there should be no remaining lists in
the church that the Elders do not know about. If there are, they
must be destroyed or brought to the Elders’ attention as soon as
possible.
Some important dates in June:
Saturday 2nd
June: Church gift day and prayer morning
Sunday 3rd
June: Church anniversary
Wednesday 20th
June: The Wandle Ringers, fund-raising
concert for a new Scout hut in Mounthurst Road.
!!!Stop Press!!!
Wednesday 20th
June: The Wandle Ringers
Besides the phone numbers given on the formal poster (see next page) it
is of course also possible to buy your tickets at church on Sunday
mornings (or at other times by arrangement). Tickets are available from
Christine at £8 each.
Christian Aid week
Thanks to all concerned for your help and support during Christian Aid
week. At time of writing the week has not yet reached its conclusion but it
appears that, thanks largely to Barbara’s coffee morning, HFC will be able
to send in some £500 – an excellent total given that we no longer make
house-to-house collections. Our final result will include envelopes returned
after they were picked up at the end of the Parade Service on 13th
May, so
if there are any outstanding, please get them back to Christine as soon as
possible – thank you. A full report and confirmation will appear in next
month’s Catalyst.

20. Final Thought
Loved with everlasting love,
Led by grace that love to know;
Spirit breathing from above
Thou has taught me it is so.
O this full and perfect peace!
O this transport all divine!
In a love that cannot cease,
I am His and He is mine!
George Wade Robinson (1838-77)
… And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is
love. Whoever lives in love, lives in God, and God in him.
I John 4.16 (NIV)
