The Scout24 Data Landscape Manifesto: Building an Opinionated Data PlatformRising Media Ltd.
The Scout24 Data Landscape Manifesto is the formalization of our opinions on how a successful data-driven company should approach data. In a truly data-driven company, no manager, no salesperson, no engineer and no data scientist can do their job properly without easy access to large amounts of high-quality data. It is Sean's mandate to create a platform that encourages the production of high-quality data and enables engagement with data by all employees. He and his team are opinionated about how all producers and consumers of data need to be active participants in the data platform, to make data-driven decisions and to be responsible for the data they produce. And he built the data platform with 'nudges' that reward data usage that matches his vision for a data-driven company. In this talk, Sean will present the Scout24 Data Landscape Manifesto and will show how the strong opinions it contains enabled him to successfully migrate from a classic centralized data warehouse to a decentralized, scalable, cloud-based data platform at AutoScout24 and ImmobilienScout24 that is core to their analytics and machine learning activities.

The landscape of enterprise data is changing with the advent of enterprise social data, IoT, logs and click-streams. The data is too big, moves too fast, or doesn’t fit the structures of current database architectures. As Forrester points out, “with growing data volume, increasing compliance pressure, and the evolution of Big Data, enterprise architect (EA) professionals should review their archiving strategies, leveraging new technologies and approaches.”
Past infrastructures provided compute, storage and network enabling static enterprise deployments which changed every few years. This talk will analyze the consequences of a world where production SAP and Spark clusters including data can be provisioned in minutes with the push of a button.
What does it mean for the IT architecture of an enterprise? How to stay in control in a super agile world?

Open source Apache Hadoop is a great framework for distributed processing of large data sets. But there’s a difference between “playing” with big data versus solving real problems. The reality is that Hadoop alone is not enough. In fact, almost every organization that plans to use Hadoop for production use quickly discovers that it lacks the required features for enterprise use. And, fewer still have the Hadoop specialists on hand to navigate through the complexity to build reliable, robust applications. As a result, many Hadoop projects never make it to production as executives say, “we just don’t have the skills.” In this session, we will discuss these enterprise capabilities and why they’re important: analytics, visualization, security, enterprise integration, developer/admin tools, and more. Additionally, we will share several real-world client examples who have found it necessary to use an enterprise-grade Hadoop platform to tackle some of the most interesting and challenging business problems.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

11. About Scale-Out File Storage
11
Scale-out file storage is a class of products well suited to address the explosive
growth of unstructured data and distributed computing architectures deployed to
crunch the data. Scale-out file storage uses a parallel file system to cluster multiple
storage nodes together, presenting a single namespace and storage pool to provide
high bandwidth for multiple hosts at the same time.
Hyperscale cloud service providers changed the game by deploying
new file storage technology on millions of servers, which put the
“hyper” in scale. Enterprise NAS leaders were challenged with
the integration of traditional and emerging technologies. In 2016,
NetApp bridged the gap. ONTAP 9 allows massive scalability up to
20 PB in a single namespace with 400 billion files and 200
constituents, while automatically spreading performance evenly
across a cluster.

• IT Pros Select NetApp as Scale-Out File Storage Market Leader
– Market leadership changed hands this year for Scale-Out File Storage when voters decided on NetApp—the
perennial NAS Market Leader—for the first time. IT Brand Pulse believes positive customer feedback about
ONTAP 9, released in 2016, has significantly improved IT pro perceptions of NetApp’s scale-out file storage
offering.
• NetApp Chosen in All Six Categories of Brand Leadership
– The company’s sweep of all six categories (Market, Performance, Reliability, Innovation, Price, and Service
& Support Leader) suggests the breadth of their best-in-class capabilities is shaping views of market
leadership in an ultra-competitive field.
• NetApp Dominates Voting for Innovation Leader
– The brand leader category in this survey with the biggest spread between first and second was Innovation,
with NetApp named the winner, followed by Dell EMC. This is another strong indicator that customers
believe ONTAP 9 is a breakthrough product for NetApp.
• Dell EMC and HPE Place Second and Third in Nearly Every Category
– With the exception of Innovation—where software-defined storage pioneer Scality broke into the leader
board at third place—Dell EMC and HPE finished number two and three in every category of brand
leadership.
