5. Each oval is a peer-
reviewed article
Ovals that are close
together are often cited
or mentioned together
in other papers
6. Looking closely we can see
dense “nests” of citations
where authors in similar
fields keep mentioning each
other’s work.
7. We also see lots of “long
lines” where authors are
making connections with
other disciplines.
8. And there are also these
articles which sit in the
middle, and seem to form
bridges between
disciplines….
9. If every published article is connected
with many others, what are the
implications for your reading?
10. We often think “reading” is about
understanding a particular article,
but a big part of academic reading
is seeing the connections between
articles that form an ongoing
research conversation.

21. What is an Embedded Inquiry
Specialist?
The Embedded Peer Inquiry Specialist is an
undergraduate student attached to a specific GE
Cluster for the entire academic year. This student has
previously completed the course they are embedded in.
Their primary goals are to provide assistance to
students in improving and refining their writing and
research skills. However, they are also able to offer
personal anecdotes into what they did to succeed in the
course and offer any insight they have learned about
life at UCLA. Your InqSpec can be reached via email,
consultation, office hours, or before and after lectures.
22. Who is the Embedded InqSpec?
• Max McNally
• 2nd Year
• Major: Communication Studies
• Hometown: Newport Beach, CA
I’m hoping to get to know many of you throughout the school year. While I
am here to offer writing and research assistance to students in the M1
Cluster, I am also here for you as a peer. I took this course just last year
and am familiar with the material. Moreover, I know the challenges that
you may face during your freshman year and I am here to help you in any
way I can. I encourage all of you to either attend office hours or schedule
consultations for any help you might need or even just to introduce
yourself. I look forward to working with you guys.
23. Why should you meet with your
Embedded InqSpec?
• Learn to navigate the online resources
offered by the UCLA Libraries
• Improve as a writer through one-on-one
consultations
• Learn successful study habits
• Get advice and insight from someone
who has taken your cluster before
25. How to schedule a consultation?
