The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake saw the northeast coast of Japan destroyed, taking along
with it its industry, culture and people. One of the many islands affected is Miyato Island:
famous for its views and natural beauty, it is now a barren wasteland. However, the
government’s plan of building a 40km long seawall (dubbed “The Great Wall of Japan”)
along the eastern coast is the response to protect these coastlines. Such a response can
potentially cut off the connection out towards the sea and threaten the nearby ecosystem...

Miyato Salt Farm Onsen
The proposal has 3 main parts: the community hall, the salt water onsen (lit. Hot springs) and the bathhouse. The visitors
are guided through the landscaped gardens first (from left to right as read from site plan above) and it given a tour of
the saltwater operations before moving on to the main entrance where one would walk though the community hall and
then finally to the changing room for the open hot spring baths. This journey has allowed the visitor to acknowledge the
communal/cultural significance of the saltwater they are about to bathe in. The final flourish where the bathers would end
would be the bathhouse, overlooking the salt terrace farm; out towards the sea...

Bath House
The final flourish of the project that is the bath house would be the partying gift for any
visitor by offering up the view of the salt farm channeling downwards towards the sea. The
technique ‘Borrowed Scenery’ is used here; commonly a Japanese landscaping trick to
incorporate the background landscape into the composition of a immediate space.
	 Immediately on the left of the user would be the salt absorbed concrete, not only
to visualize the salt of the water the user is bathing on - but is also to regulate the salinity of
the water.

The Solar Decathlon is an international competition to design, build
& operate sustainable housing solutions powered by solar energy.
Exclusive to university students around the world; the final phase
sees each team to fully assemble the prototypes which are then
exhibited to the public and evaluated through 10 contests for 2
weeks. Representing the CASS School of Architecture, we design
and built SOL_ID, a net zero energy house in Cali, Colombia that
also combines modern aesthetics and data calculations to form the
building.
	 The project promotes teamwork and scrutinizes on
every detail of building design, from MEP, heating strategies, water
discharge and waste disposal...

PVC membrane was applied to one arch as a waterproofing finish.
Tensioning the membrane across the face was not achieved, instead
the plywood was waterproofed with an oil.
The arches leaning up against the building act as flying buttresses.
Although not structurally required, with them, SOL_ID feels...Solid.

Throughout the Solar Decathlon, we had a total of 10 competitions to
compete in. Some of these contests were quantitative, they included hot
water draws, measured thermal comfort, electrical energy balance and
operating electrical appliances at certain times of the day.
The other contests were marked by a jury. A series of contest captains
were in charge of showing the juries of different disciplines around
the prototype. The design was marked on several criteria, namely
Architecture, Innovation, Communications, Engineering & Construction,
Urban Design & Affordability.

SOL_ID - CALI : CONSTRUCTION
The idea behind the service pod was to contain almost all the serviced
elements within one block. The images illustrate how the electricity and
water is taken from the service room, along a bridge over the kitchen
and then down through the ceiling of the toilet and shower rooms.
Power produced by the photovoltaic on the roof is directed to the service
room, where it is inverted from DC to AC. The power is directed into the
circuit breaker before being distributed into the rest of the house.
The bridge taking the electricity and water pipes over the Inverter and circuit breaker Water and electricity is directed to the toilet and bathroom through the ceiling

Each house is responsible for hosting at least one dinner party throughout
the competition week. Teams invite members of other teams over for a
set menu dinner.
We cooked a Thai green curry that went down a treat, receiving our
lowest score of 97/100.
CALI:COMPETITION
SHIGERU BAN ARCHITECTS
PROFESSIONAL PROJECT
This new station building is built approximately
150m inland from the old station building which
was destroyed by the tsunami on March 11th,
2011. The building will uniquely have two
programmes under one roof: a onsen (hot spring
indoor bath) and train station).Furthermore, the
3-storey station building will consist of retail
shops, and waiting areas on the 1st floor and a
viewing deck on the 3rd floor.
	 My role in the team was pivotal
in the presentation of the project; being a
disaster relief project, consultation, design and
presentation was done in quick succession.
Being the team member mainly in charge of
visualisation, rending and model making, we
was able to convince the locals as well as the
government, that the project was a elegant
architectural response to the disaster.

Site Model MakingModel Making and Visualisation
The scheme, planned for an ocean-front
property just 40 minutes from Taipei, will provide
a new arrival hall to serve the complex’s 10,000
existing burial sites and an oceanic pavilion for
an additional 150,000 ashbox sites. Pulling the
ocean horizon into the composition, intersecting
spheres will be embedded into a rectangular
plan shrouded by a thin sheet of water.
	 The main challenges working on the
project was the negotiations of the landscaping
to the ramp ratios to be of regulation. Many
options was proposed but my calculation was
a key deciding factor for the ramp positions and
design for which disabled access as is funeral
hearse to access the necropolis.

One of the many islands affected is Miyato Island: famous for its views and natural beauty, it is now a barren wasteland. However, the government’s plan of building a 40km long seawall (dubbed “The Great Wall of Japan”) along the eastern coast is the response to protect these coastlines. Such a response can potentially cut off the connection out towards the sea and threaten the nearby ecosystem... Hot springs) and the bathhouse. The visitors are guided through the landscaped gardens first (from left to right as read from site plan above) and it given a tour of the saltwater operations before moving on to the main entrance where one would walk though the community hall and then finally to the changing room for the open hot spring baths. This journey has allowed the visitor to acknowledge the communal/cultural significance of the saltwater they are about to bathe in. The final flourish where the bathers would end would be the bathhouse, overlooking the salt terrace farm; out towards the sea... 6

  • 8. Bath House The final flourish of the project that is the bath house would be the partying gift for any visitor by offering up the view of the salt farm channeling downwards towards the sea. The technique ‘Borrowed Scenery’ is used here; commonly a Japanese landscaping trick to incorporate the background landscape into the composition of a immediate space. Immediately on the left of the user would be the salt absorbed concrete, not only to visualize the salt of the water the user is bathing on - but is also to regulate the salinity of the water.

Exclusive to university students around the world; the final phase sees each team to fully assemble the prototypes which are then exhibited to the public and evaluated through 10 contests for 2 weeks. Representing the CASS School of Architecture, we design and built SOL_ID, a net zero energy house in Cali, Colombia that also combines modern aesthetics and data calculations to form the building. The project promotes teamwork and scrutinizes on every detail of building design, from MEP, heating strategies, water discharge and waste disposal... The images illustrate how the electricity and water is taken from the service room, along a bridge over the kitchen and then down through the ceiling of the toilet and shower rooms. Power produced by the photovoltaic on the roof is directed to the service room, where it is inverted from DC to AC. The power is directed into the circuit breaker before being distributed into the rest of the house.   • 15. This new station building is built approximately 150m inland from the old station building which was destroyed by the tsunami on March 11th, 2011. The building will uniquely have two programmes under one roof: a onsen (hot spring indoor bath) and train station).Furthermore, the 3-storey station building will consist of retail shops, and waiting areas on the 1st floor and a viewing deck on the 3rd floor. My role in the team was pivotal in the presentation of the project; being a disaster relief project, consultation, design and presentation was done in quick succession. The scheme, planned for an ocean-front property just 40 minutes from Taipei, will provide a new arrival hall to serve the complex’s 10,000 existing burial sites and an oceanic pavilion for an additional 150,000 ashbox sites.
