Volleyball, born in 1895 through the inventive mind of William G. Morgan, originated as "Mintonette" within YMCA circles in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. Quickly evolving from its humble beginnings, it underwent a significant name change to "volleyball" as Alfred Halstead aptly captured its essence during an early exhibition. With standardized rules established, the sport spread rapidly, finding fertile ground within YMCA organizations and beyond. The formation of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) in 1947 marked a pivotal moment, ushering in a new era of international recognition and growth. Volleyball made its Olympic debut in 1964, captivating audiences worldwide with its fast-paced action and competitive spirit. Over the years, beach volleyball emerged as a popular variant, further diversifying the sport's appeal. Today, volleyball stands as a global phenomenon, celebrated for its athleticism, teamwork, and universal accessibility, embodying the enduring spirit of camaraderie and competition.

John Martin
In his first year at the
helm of the Central
Oklahoma program is
John Martin, who took
over the reigns last July
after spending the previ-
ous four seasons as head
coach at Coffeyville
(Kan.) Community College.
Martin, a former standout at Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival
Emporia State and Major League Baseball
draft pick, went 133-105 at Coffeyville and
guided the Ravens to the regional tournament
all four years.
John assumed control of the Coffeyville
program in August 2011 and led the team to a
school-record 33 wins during the 2012 season,
earning Jayhawk Conference Coach of the
Year honors.
The Ravens tied that record by winning 33
games again the following season, set another
record with a 38-18 campaign in 2014 and had
29 wins last spring. Martin took the Ravens to
four straight super regional tournaments, one
of just two teams in the junior college ranks
to accomplish that feat.
A prep standout at Shawnee Mission (Kan.)
North High School, Martin played one year at
Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College before
going to ESU and putting together a sensa-
tional three-year starting career at catcher.
John capped his college career by leading the
Hornets to the NCAADivision II World Series
The Martin File
as a senior and was a 24th round draft pick of
the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006.
He spent two years in the Dodgers organi-
zation and also played one season each for
independent professional teams in Kansas City
and Wichita.
Martin returned to Emporia State to start his
college coaching career in 2008 as assistant
coach, directing the pitchers and catchers. He
helped the Hornets to a 134-42 record during
his three-year tenure, including a national
runner-up finish in 2009.
Martin also spent two summers as manager
of the Liberal Bee Jays, a summer collegiate
baseball team. He coached the team to a 42-
13 record and the National Baseball Congress
championship in 2010 when he was named
NBC Manager of the Year.
John is married (Courtney).

2016 UCO BASEBALL
Aaron Rea
In his first year as a graduate assistant coach with the Central Oklahoma baseball program is Aaron Rea,
who will work with the outfielders and hitters.
Rea coached outfielders and hitters at Coffeyville Community College last year under new UCO head
coach John Martin.
Aaron was a two-year standout at Cowley County Community College, earning All-Jayhawk Conference
honors as a sophomore. He spent his junior season at Division I Wichita State before playing at Emporia
State as a senior, collecting All-MIAA recognition with the Hornets.
Rea earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from ESU in 2014.
Jeff Christy
In his first year as Central Oklahoma’s full-time assistant coach is Jeff Christy, who came to the Bronchos
after spending the previous five seasons at the Division I level.
Christy, who works with the pitchers and catchers while also serving as UCO’s recruiting coordinator,
was an assistant coach at long-time Division I powers Wichita State and Nebraska. He coached with the
Shockers in 2011 before assisting the Huskers the past four years.
A native of Lincoln, Neb., Jeff was taken in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft but chose to play at
Barton County Community College and was a two-year standout there, earning first-team All-Jayhawk
League honors as a sophomore.
Christy moved on to Nebraska and was a two-year starter, helping lead the Huskers to the 2005 College
World Series. Christy caught a school-record 64 games in 2005 and was an honorable-mention All-Big 12 pick in 2006.
Jeff was selected in the sixth round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins and spent four seasons in the Twins organiza-
tion, reaching the TripleAlevel in 2008 and 2009. He spent the 2010 season with the Wichita Wingnuts of theAmericanAssociation
and was named an All-Star.
Christy began his coaching career at Wichita State in 2011 and helped guide the Shockers to a 39-26 record and the championship
game of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. At WSU, Jeff was in charge of the catchers and helped the starting catcher
become a Johnny Bench award finalist and an 18th-round draft pick.
Christy then spent the summer of 2011 as the manager of the Derby Twins in the Jayhawk Summer Collegiate League, leading
the team a 28-17 record and the NBC World Series.
Christy started coaching with Nebraska in the fall of 2011, working with the catchers and as the first base coach. The Huskers made
their first regional appearance in five years in 2014 and Christy helped two NU catchers get drafted and play professional baseball.
Jeff earned his bachelor’s degree from Nebraska in 2008. He and his wife (Michelle) have one daughter (Quinn).
Sawyer Carroll
In his second year on the Central Oklahoma baseball staff as a graduate assistant coach is former Division
I All-American and professional player Sawyer Carroll.
A baseball-football star at Henryetta High School who led the Knights to a Class 3A state baseball cham-
pionship, Carroll played two years at Seminole State College and was an All-Bi-State Conference performer
as a sophomore.
Sawyer went on to play two years at Kentucky, hitting a Southeastern Conference-best 23 doubles as a
junior before putting together a record-setting senior season in 2008.
Carroll became the first consensus first-team All-American in school history that year after hitting a
conference-leading .419 with 19 home runs and a school-record 83 runs batted in to lead the Wildcats to the national tournament.
He was also an Academic All-SEC selection as a senior and finished with school career records for average (.386) and on-base
percentage (.483).
Carroll was taken in the third round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres and played several years in the
minor leagues for the organization, earning Midwest LeagueAll-Star honors in 2009 and Texas LeagueAll-Star recognition in 2011.
A cousin of former UCO baseball All-American Tyler Carroll, Sawyer is married (Katie).
Assistant Coaches
8. 6
2016 UCO BASEBALL
new coach and a mostly new roster should make for an
interesting season at Central Oklahoma, but don’t sell the
Bronchos short just yet.
First-year skipper John Martin is confident his squad will
compete at a high level in 2016 despite having 30 newcomers
on the 39-man roster, with the majority of those new players expected
to fill key roles throughout the starting lineup.
“We have high hopes and I expect us to go out and win right away,”
said Martin, who came to UCO last summer after four years as head
coach at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College. “That’s what our
guys expect as well.
“I think it’s a plus that we have a lot of new faces because we’re all
starting over. We’re going to work hard every single day in everything
we do and we’re going to have fun and we’re going to be a family.”
The Bronchos return just eight lettermen from last year’s 19-26
team, but two of those -- senior first baseman/designated hitter Isaac
Hellbusch and senior pitcher
Dalton Leiker -- are
among the best players
in the Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athlet-
ics Association.
UCO also has back another starting pitcher in senior Car-
son Corff, while senior Jacob Borrego started all last year at
shortstop and junior Chris Lobato was a part-time starter at catcher.
The bulk of the starting spots will be be manned by newcomers
as the Bronchos brought in a heavy influx of talented junior college
transfers and Martin expects his team to be fundamentally sound.
“Playing defense and pitching is what it’s all about,” said Martin,
a standout catcher during his playing career at MIAA rival Emporia
State. “You’ve got to pitch it and catch it. Offensively, we want to put
the ball in play and put pressure on the defense. If you do that, good
things will happen.”
“Our biggest thing is just to go play hard and compete. That’s what
I expect. You can control how hard you play and that’s what we’re
focused on.”
Here’s a position-by-position look at UCO:
Catcher
Junior Chris Lobato started 23 games behind the plate last
season and is ready to assume a full-time role this spring. He’s
a defensive standout with a strong arm and also looks to be
much improved offensively. Junior transfer Dan Weer
will be the main back-up, with senior Isaac Hellbusch
also available if needed.
First Base
The Bronchos are in good shape here, with senior slugger Isaac
Hellbusch slated to take over as the starter after being the main desig-
nated hitter last year. Hellbusch was an honorable mention All-MIAA
selection after hitting .299 with 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 43 runs
batted in along with eight stolen bases and could be even more of an
offensive threat in 2016. Juniors Jon Kamies and Trae Smith can play
here if Hellbusch goes to DH or catcher.
Second Base
Junior Brenton Washausen is the top candidate to fill the starting
spot at second base and should give UCO a big boost with his offensive
prowess after batting .353 with 13 doubles, six homers and 37 RBI at
Independence (Kan.) Community College last year. Junior letterman
Casey Wissinger and sophomore Jake Dyer offer quality depth.
A
Daulton
Leiker
2016 Season Outlook
Shortstop
This is the only position where the Bronchos have back an every-day
starter and senior Jacob Borrego ranks among the top defenders in
the conference. He had a .253 average with eight doubles and 29 RBI
last year in addition to making a team-high 112 assists and is ready to
finish with a flourish. Junior Brenton Washausen is available in an
emergency.
Third Base
UCO is counting on junior T.J. Sparr taking over at the hot corner
and much is expected of this multi-talented newcomer in all phases of
the game. He batted .324 with 14 doubles, a school-record seven triples,
six homers and 23 steals at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College
last season and will have a major impact. Junior Brenton
Washausen can help out if needed.
Outfield
Newcomers will take over in the outfield and competi-
tion is fierce at all three spots.
Juniors Jon Kamies and Korey Floyd are bat-
tling it out in left field, junior Landon Eason
is favored to start in right and fleet-footed
junior Xavier Warren is expected to be in
center. Versatile junior Jake Dyer can play
anywhere, while freshman Brenden Fowler,
sophomore Torey Hart and juniors Hunter
Schellhardt and Casey Bowlan are all
capable of contributing.
Kamies is expected to add punch to UCO’s
attack after hitting .393 with 16 doubles and 33
RBI at Independence last year, while Floyd had
12 doubles and 32 RBI at Northern Oklahoma-
Enid. Eason is a dangerous switch-hitter
and Warren is an offensive
cataylyst who will probably
end up as the team’s lead-
off hitter.
Pitcher
The pitching staff is spearheaded by one of the top
returners in the league, but newcomers will throw the majority
of innings this spring.
Senior standout Daulton Leiker is the ace after earning second-
teamAll-MIAA honors last year. He went a tough-luck 2-4, but had a
fine 3.97 earned run average with 88 strikeouts and opponents hit just
.212 against him. Juniors Greg Hyde and Brock Stuber are favored
to join Leiker as weekend starters, with sophomore Austin Stewart,
juniors Ryan McCourt and Jaycee Parker and senior returner Carson
Corff all fighting for starting duty. Corff went 2-2 with a 6.80 ERA
last year while throwing the second-most innings (42 1/3) on the staff.
McCourt could also see action in a closer role along with sophomore
J.D. Cameron, while juniors Kyle Dale, Zayne Dougan, Jaycee
Parker, Drew Polk, Bobby Pierce, Gibson Russ, Shawn Troutman
and Colt Weiner and senior Zack Wunderlich will be used in a variety
of relief roles.
Designated Hitter
Plenty of players could see action here, depending on what happens
at other positions and who has the hot bat. Senior Isaac Hellbusch was
an honorable mention All-MIAA pick at this position last year and will
see time here when he’s not playing first base, while sophomore Trae
Smith will also contend for at bats.

Central Oklahoma never recovered from a slow start and posted its

The Bronchos lost their first four games of the year and only reached

who were never shut out and averaged 6.8 runs
a game. But UCO had 20 more errors than their
opponents and finished with a team earned run
average of 6.67.
The Bronchos opened the season with a three-
game series at Arkansas-Fort Smith and lost all
three, including one by two runs and another by one.
UCO dropped a 12-10 neutral-site decision to Re-
gis before notching its first win on Feb. 14 with a 6-4
12-inning victory over Colorado School of Mines.

2015 Season Review
three games in a league series with Emporia State to fall to 4-10 overall
and 1-6 in the conference.
UCO followed with a season-best six-game winning streak, including
a four-game MIAA sweep of Lincoln. The Bronchos belted 15 home
runs and scored 61 runs in that series, capped by a 31-7 rout as Ethan
Elroy went 5-for-5 with three homers.
A 16-3 romp over Lindenwood was the final win
of that streak and it got UCO to 10-10 on the season
and 6-6 in the league, but the Bronchos promptly
lost their next five games and never reached the
.500 mark again.
UCO dropped to 12-18 and 7-13 with a series-
opening loss to Northeastern State before coming
back to take the final three games.
The Bronchos then split a four-game set with
eventual conference champion Missouri Southern,
winning the opener 11-9 behind a 17-hit attack and
taking the finale by the same score as Isaac Hell-
busch drove in five runs.
That had UCO at 16-18 on the season and 11-13
in the MIAA, but the Bronchos lost six of their final
eight games -- three of those by one run -- to miss
qualifying for the league tournament.
