BACK-TO-BACK NCAA BERTHS
DEDICATION—Megan McGrane worked
her way from walk-on to one of the
nation’s best at her position. She was the
2003 Big East Libero of the Year and be-
came the school’s all-time leader in digs
last season.
LEADING THE WAY—Along with 2003 Big East and AVCA
Northeast Region Coach of the Year Chris Beerman, the Pan-
thers have all-star caliber assistants in Jason Kepner (below
left) and Alija Pittenger (below). All three enjoyed success as
collegiate volleyball players and brought that winning atmosphere
to Pitt.
BIG EAST’S BEST—Four Panthers earned All-Big East
honors in 2004, including (from left to right) Diana
Andreyko, Megan Miller, Gini Ullery and Megan McGrane.
All four players earned All-Northeast Region honors as
well, while Miller, Ullery and McGrane were named Hon-
orable Mention All-Americans.

PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE—The Panthers have had numerous
players earn conference and region honors in 2003-04. (Left)
Diana Andreyko was the 2004 Big East Rookie of the Year.
(Middle) Megan Miller was the 2003 Big East Championships
Most Outstanding Player. (Right) Wendy Hatlestad accepts
the Big East MVP award in 2003.
TEAMWORK—Pitt volleyball has stressed working together to
achieve its goals of winning a Big East Championship and mak-
ing the NCAA Tournament. Last year, the Panthers earned their
first ever at-large berth into the tournament after their fourth
20-win season this decade.

2005 SEASON OUTLOOK
First team All-Big East and Honorable
Mention All-American outside hitter
Gini Ullery led the Panthers with 549
kills in 2004.
Diana Andreyko earned Big East
and AVCA Northeast Region
Rookie of the Year honors.
U
nder head coach Chris
Beerman’s direction, the Pan-
thers rewrote a new chapter
in their storied and proud volleyball his-
tory in 2004. Pitt earned its first ever
at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament
and it turned out to be a special ac-
complishment for Beerman.
“Since we’ve received an at-large bid,
I consider ourselves an NCAA team,”
Beerman said. “We’ve got to play that
way and take care of business when it
counts. That’s what the good teams
do.”
Beerman’s goals for the 2005 sea-
son have changed but only for the bet-
ter. He now wants the Panthers to be
counted on to make the NCAA Tour-
nament each year, whether it be by
winning the conference or getting back
by another at-large berth.
“Our goals now as a program are to
make the NCAA Tournament every
year,” Beerman said. “I think early on
it was to win the Big East Champion-
ship but getting an at-large bid changes
things. We need to build on the respect
we earned last year and the success
we’ve had over the last two seasons.”
OUTSIDE HITTERS
The Panthers return four outside hit-
ters, two of which earned postseason
honors on a conference and regional
level. Three will vie for playing time on
the outside as well in 2005. That com-
bination of returning experience and
fresh faces make the position one of
strength for the 2005 Panthers, ac-
cording to Beerman.
“I think if you’re a coach you feel pretty
solid on the outside,” Beerman said. “I
think we’re going to be comfortable but
you can’t just be an outside dominant
team.”
Gini Ullery, an All-Big East First
Team selection, returns for a fifth and
final year at Pitt. Last season she aver-
aged 4.9 kills and 2.51 digs per game
after coming back from a torn ACL in
2003. Another knee surgery following
the 2004 season put Ullery on the shelf
for the spring season, but Beerman ex-
pects her back at full strength for the
fall.
“I would hope she would follow the ex-
ample of Megan Miller in 2004, Sarah
Rollman in 2003, and Wendy Hatlestad
in 2003 who had their best year in their
senior year,” Beerman said. “That’s
really critical to Gini. She’s been consis-
tent but I think she has more in her.”
Senior Ashley White returns for her
second season with the Panthers.
White, a native of St. Charles Ill., played
two seasons at Indiana University be-
fore transferring to Pitt.
“White played a little outside and a little
middle,” Beerman said. “Her offense is
very good but will need to continue to
develop her blocking.”
Joining Ullery and White on the out-
side is the reigning Big East and AVCA
Northeast Region Rookie of the Year,
Diana Andreyko. Andreyko looks to
build on a successful rookie year in
2005.
“For D[iana] it’s trying to avoid a
sophomore jinx and knowing that people
will be gunning for her,” Beerman said.
“She’s going to have to pick up her game
but the great thing about D is that she
will want to do that. She’ll make every
effort to be better this year than she
was in 2004.”
Kim Norris looks to bounce back in
2005. After suffering a season ending
ACL injury in just the 10th match last
season, Norris looks to regain the form
of 2003 in which she played in 25
matches.
“She’s fine and I think she’s ready to
go,” Beerman said. “She’s a great team
player. She will accept any role that I
give her. I know she’s looking forward
to a great senior year.”
Joining the Panthers for 2005 is 6-1
freshman Monica Macellari. Macellari
might find herself in the starting lineup if
she develops like Beerman hopes she
will.
“She’s got all the potential in the
world,” Beerman said. “Her timeline is
based on how quickly I can coach her
up. She’s also extremely intelligent and
her potential is outstanding.”
Stephanie Ross also joins the Pan-
thers and is expected to contribute at
right side hitter. Ross has shown
Beerman in club ball that she could be
ready to play right away in 2005.
“She’s very well trained and plays like
a veteran already,” Beerman said.
“She’s one of the most intelligent volley-
ball players we’ve had since I’ve been
here as far as the freshmen go. She’s
a savvy player and someone I think the
fans are going to love watching her.”
6. 2005 Pitt Volleyball6
2005 SEASON OUTLOOK
Ashley White was used on the outside
and in the middle in her first year with
the Panthers.
In her first season as a starter,
Azadeh Boroumand was among
the Big East’s top setters.
Joining Macellari and Ross as new-
comers is Pittsburgh’s very own Mel-
issa Stadelman. Stadelman joins the
team as a walk-on from nearby Carrick
High School.
“We’re fortunate to have Melissa,”
Beerman said. “She’s kind of a diamond
in the rough. She’s a very strong kid,
with a very good work ethic and a very
dedicated player. I think she’s really go-
ing to develop.”
MIDDLE HITTERS
Pittsburgh must replace two depart-
ing middle hitters from last year’s NCAA
squad. The Panthers lost AVCA Hon-
orable Mention All-American and Big
East Most Outstanding Player Megan
Miller, who averaged 4.51 kills per
game and accumulated 78 blocks. Pitt
will also be without departed senior Jes-
sica McDonald, who tallied 80 blocks
in her final season.
“I think Miller had such a huge impact
that you kind of think youth when you
think of this year’s team,” Beerman
said. “We have a couple players coming
back, which gives us a core, and then
we’ll see what the freshmen can bring.”
Returning to the middle for the Pan-
thers is 6-3 sophomore Ashley
Creighton. Creighton took advantage
of the spring workouts, a fact that did
not go unnoticed by her coach.
“Ashley really had a great spring,”
Beerman said. “She worked on her con-
ditioning. I’m looking forward to a
breakout season for her this year.
Ashley could really surprise some
people.”
White showed versatility last season
by putting time at both outside hitter and
middle hitter. She played middle after
Miller went down with an injury towards
the end of the year.
“Last year she (White) had to play
middle when Miller went down,” Beerman
said. “She did a nice job in the middle. I
expect to work her some there and
hopefully improve her blocking.”
Two other middles join the Panthers
this season as newcomers. Allie
Cherven and Jessica Moses may only
be freshmen this year, but Beerman is
not worrying.
“Allie’s a very hard worker, a very ex-
perienced and very savvy player,”
Beerman said. “She’s a very experi-
enced, long time club player and is to-
tally ready to play as a freshman.”
“Jessica is a very strong, hard hitting
middle,” Beerman said. “She’s very ag-
gressive and competitive. Her upside is
awesome. She could easily be a domi-
nant middle now and in the future.”
SETTERS
The Panthers return junior setter
Azadeh Boroumand who led the Big
East in assists per game last season in
her first year as a starter. Last sea-
son she moved into seventh place in
career assists with over 1,400 set
helpers.
“She has a year of starting under her
belt,” Beerman said. “She had a great
spring figuring the game out a little bit
more. I’m really looking forward to
Azadeh’s junior year. I think she’s go-
ing to take even another step up.”
Backing up Boroumand is freshman
Nicole Taurence. Taurence, a Tren-
ton Michigan native, will look to provide
depth setter for the Panthers in 2005.
“Nicole’s probably one of the most un-
heralded, best kept secrets in the set-
ter class in 2005,” Beerman said.
“She’s got all the potential in the world.
She could be one of the best setters in
the conference very quickly.”
LIBERO/DEFENSIVE
SPECIALIST
The Panthers return arguably one of
the best liberos in the country. Megan
McGrane returns for her final season
at Pitt as the Panthers’ all-time digs
leader and ranked sixth nationally with
6.25 digs per game last season.
“I think McGrane’s the best return-
ing libero in the country,” Beerman said.
“She constantly improves. I think you’ll
see an even better McGrane this year.
I think she’s going to peak out as a se-
nior and is really fired up to play in her
senior year.”
Pittsburgh native Melissa Ferguson
returns as the backup at defensive spe-
cialist as a sophomore in 2005.
“Melissa’s a great team player and
really contributed more than I thought
she would in 2004,” Beerman said. “I
can see her coming in and making an
impact as a server and a defensive spe-
cialist this year. She’s very competitive
and confident.”
7. 2005 Pitt Volleyball 7
2005 SEASON OUTLOOK
Megan McGrane needs just 197 digs to become
the 12th NCAA Division I player to record 2,000
digs in a career.
THE SCHEDULE
Beerman knows that after earning the program’s first ever
NCAA Tournament at-large bid, things should not get easier.
The schedule certainly does not as seven teams on the sched-
ule appeared in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
“When you get an at-large bid you don’t go backwards
from there,” Beerman said. “I think the first time you get an
at-large bid you have to earn it. Now as you head into the
2005 schedule I think you have to continue to play teams
that are NCAA teams. Our schedule this year is very ambi-
tious.”
The Panthers open up the season on the road competing
in the Delaware Invitational Aug. 26-27. They square off
against San Francisco, New Hampshire and the host Dela-
ware Fightin’ Blue Hens.
“I do love the new August start,” Beerman said of the
NCAA deciding to push back the start one week. “I was a big
proponent of that change and I think that’s going to be great
for us playing at Delaware that first weekend.”
After competing in the Florida State Invitational, the Pan-
thers return to Pittsburgh to take on cross town rival
Duquesne Sept. 6. Pitt opens up its home schedule with the
20th annual Pittsburgh Invitational Sept. 9-10. The Panthers
are set to take on the Terrapins of Maryland, American Uni-
versity and the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks. That begins a stretch
in which Pitt plays three of its next five matches against NCAA
participants.
“Our home tournament is great because Maryland was an
NCAA team, American was an NCAA team and Miami of
Ohio will probably be an NCAA team very soon,” Beerman
said.
Pitt travels to Columbus Ohio the following weekend (Sept.
16-17) to take part in the Ohio State Buckeye Classic. There
they go up against the host Buckeyes of the Big Ten, the
ACC’s Duke Blue Devils and Mountain West’s Brigham Young
Cougars.
The Panthers open up their 2005 Big East Conference
schedule at home against the Wildcats of Villanova Sept. 24.
Pitt’s remaining conference home schedule includes visits by
Rutgers (Sept. 25), Syracuse (Oct 8), conference newcomer
Marquette (Oct. 9), West Virginia (Oct. 14), Seton Hall (Oct.
28), conference newcomer DePaul (Nov. 5) and defending
conference champion Notre Dame (Nov. 6). Pitt’s confer-
ence road opponents include newcomer South Florida (Sept.
30), Georgetown (Oct. 2), new conference powerhouse Lou-
isville (Oct. 22), Cincinnati (Oct. 23) Connecticut (Nov. 11)
and St. John’s (Nov. 12).
“Louisville and Cincinnati are programs are programs I re-
spect a great deal.” Beerman said. “Marquette is definitely a
team on the rise. DePaul was just in the NCAA Tournament
five years ago. South Florida was a perennial NCAA team
and on their way up also. All five are great new additions.”
This year’s Big East Championships will be held in Louisville
from Nov. 18-20. The top eight teams will compete in the
three-day, single-elimination tournament for the Big East’s
automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
After the Big East Championships, the Panthers travel to
sunny California for two matches over the Thanksgiving Holi-
day weekend. Pitt meets perennial NCAA participant Long
Beach State on Nov. 25 and then travels to Irvine to take on
the Anteaters of UC Irvine.
“We’ve added a top 15 team into the league,” Beerman
said. “We’ve added three teams that have been in the NCAA
Tournament the last five years. Suddenly the stakes are
higher.”

CHRIS BEERMAN
HEAD COACH
BALL STATE, 1991
T
here is no second guessing which direction that Pitt volleyball
head coach Chris Beerman has the program heading in. Five
years and 100 wins after he was hired prior to the 2000
season, the Panthers have made back-to-back NCAA Tournament
appearances, won a Big East title and have won numerous confer-
ence and regional honors. It all adds up to a resurgence in a pro-
gram that is rich in volleyball history. Watch Beerman at work and
it’s easy to be overcome with an unmistakable optimism.
Point Pitt - Beerman jumps to his feet from a chair on the
Panthers’ bench, shouting words of approval. Point opponent -
Beerman is up again but this time his words are instructional and
encouraging, trying to will his team to regain the serve. It may be
hard to tell by just looking at Beerman whether his team is winning
or losing during the match but it’s easy to understand how pas-
sionate he is about the game of volleyball and how eager he is to
coach the sport.
Beerman completed a turnaround he set out to complete when
he was hired two days before Christmas in 1999 in just five sea-
sons.
A runner-up finish at last year’s Big East Championships and a
total of 21 victories earned the Panthers their first ever at-large
berth into the NCAA Tournament - the ultimate sign of respect for
an NCAA volleyball team.
The Panthers won the 2003 Big East Championship with a 3-0
victory over defending champion Notre Dame at the Joyce Center
in South Bend. It was the first time a Big East team had defeated
the Fighting Irish on their home court — ever. Beerman’s team
then advanced to its first NCAA Tournament since 1994 and
defeated the Penn Quakers, 3-1, before falling to host Penn State
in four games in the second round.
Pittsburgh won a total of 26 games last season and enjoyed its
best winning percentage (.813) since finishing 32-6 in 1990, which
was also the only other time the Panthers advanced to the second
round of the NCAA Tournament.
For his efforts, Beerman was named the Big East Co-Coach of
the Year and the Tachikara/AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the
Year by his peers.
“I consider this team an NCAA team now,” Beerman said. “Once
you get that first at-large berth, you have to think that way. You
have to schedule your matches that way, and we have to play that
way.”
The revival of the program, though, began a year earlier. After
injuries depleted the 2001 Panthers, the program suffered through
its first losing season. Beerman led the 2002 team to a 20-9
overall record and a 9-4 mark in Big East play, tying for fourth in
the conference. If not for an early-season loss to Connecticut, the
Panthers would have been playing in the Big East postseason tour-
nament against two teams it defeated in the regular season.
In his first year as head coach in 2000, Beerman helped Pitts-
burgh to its best season in six years as the Panthers posted a 22-
10 overall mark. In 2001, Pittsburgh finished just out of the
postseason tournament with a 7-5 mark in conference play and a
fifth-place standing.
That’s a total of four 20-win seasons and a total of 100 wins in
his five years at Pitt. Ten players have earned a total of 15 All-Big
East honors from 2000-04.
Not only was Beerman’s impact evident in the final standings,
but the effect he has on the players as a whole is unmistakable.
The Pittsburgh record books have been shattered with perfor-
mance after performance. Megan Miller, Wendy Hatlestad, Sarah
Rollman, Carrie Norris, Stacy Renick and Marcia Thiesen all thrived
under Beerman, while current players Megan McGrane and Gini
Ullery have already etched their names all over the Pitt record
books.
In 2004, Miller was named the Big East’s Most Valuable Player
while Diana Andreyko was the conference and region Rookie of the
Year. In 2003, Hatlestad was the Big East MVP, Miller earned
Most Outstanding Player honors in the Big East Championships,
and McGrane was named the inaugural Libero of the Year.
HEAD COACH CHRIS BEERMAN

now. Once you get that first at-large
berth, you have to think that way,

play that way.”

Beerman, who is just the sixth coach in Pitt volleyball history,
boasts a successful track record as both a player and coach. His
background, coupled with an unbridled enthusiasm and energy, made
him the perfect choice to lead the Panthers back into the national
spotlight.
“I approached this from the very beginning as a building process,”
Beerman said. “We had to rebuild as a volleyball program when I
got here in 2000 and we’ve been able to get positive results from
that process.
“It’s a totally different situation than it was here five years ago.
We’re entering into a reloading year. Even though we lost signifi-
cant contributors to our run the past two years, we have the
talent to continue making the NCAA Tournament and advancing
further.”
Beerman joined Pittsburgh after serving four seasons (1996-
99) as head coach at James Madison University, where he led the
Dukes to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and four
straight winning seasons.
He guided the Dukes to a 90-36 overall record and a 35-7 mark
in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), which included an impres-
sive 22-0 home record against conference foes. He led his teams
to three 20-win seasons at JMU, including 1999’s best-ever record
of 26-7, which featured a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
In his first year at the helm of the Dukes in 1996, Beerman
orchestrated the biggest turnaround of any NCAA team that sea-
son when he guided his squad to a 25-9 record after finishing 9-18
in the prior year.
At JMU, Beerman garnered two conference coach of the year
awards (1998 and 1999), produced one CAA Player of the Year
(1999) in Lindsay Collingwood, a pair of CAA Rookie of the Year
honorees, nine first-team and five second-team selections, as well
as five first-team all-state awards. Additionally, his teams captured
two regular season CAA championships (1998 and 1999) and the
1999 tournament championship.
Prior to JMU, Beerman has had stints as an assistant coach at
two of the universities joining the Big East Conference in 2005. He
served one season (1995) as an assistant at the University of
Louisville where he helped the team to the second round of the
NCAA Tournament and the Conference USA title.
Beerman also served three years as the assistant coach at the
University of South Florida from 1991-94. While there, the Bulls
were the 1993 Metro Conference champions and earned a berth in
the NCAA tournament.
A standout player at Ball State from 1986-90, Beerman served
as an assistant at his alma mater from 1990-91. As a collegiate
player, he helped the Cardinals to three NCAA Final Four appear-
ances and three Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association
