The University of Central Missouri
transforms students into lifelong learners,
dedicated to service, with the knowledge,
skills and confidence to succeed and lead.
Future-Focused Academics
The world moves at a faster pace than ever
before. UCM’s innovative programs use
new technologies to keep students up to date
on the latest changes in their fields of study.
Our faculty members are accomplished
in their fields as well. They bring their
experiences in industry and academia to
their classrooms for our on-campus students
in Warrensburg and Lee’s Summit, as well
as to their virtual classrooms through our
online programs.
Hands-on Experience
Learning by doing is a cornerstone of our 150 academic
programs. Through hands-on experiences, students take
their knowledge from the classroom and apply it in real-life
situations.
Whether it’s conducting research with faculty members,
developing a business plan for a local company or battling
it out in a national criminal justice competition, UCM
students graduate well prepared for the future with practical,
applicable experience.
Culture of Service
For more than 140 years, UCM’s motto, “Education for
Service,” has been embodied by students who volunteer
countless hours assisting communities, businesses and non-
profit agencies.
This tradition
continues today
when student
groups clear debris
after a tornado
or build homes
for local families
through Habitat
for Humanity.
Service has always
been a foundation
of the university.
By learning at a
university that
values that service, UCM students continue to make an
impact on their communities long after they graduate.
Global Perspective
UCM values diversity in thought, culture and people.
As a result, the university takes a worldly perspective on
education and prepares students to thrive in a globalized
economy.
UCM’s International Studies major examines global issues
affecting human development, peace and security. The
university’s study abroad programs connect students with
more than 60 countries and 285 universities worldwide.
UCM also has nearly 600 students from 47 different
countries represented on campus. Experiencing these
different ideas, cultures and people gives our students a
unique perspective and prepares them for today’s global
society.President Barack Obama spoke to a crowd of UCM students, faculty and staff,
and Warrensburg residents on July 24, 2013 at the UCM Student Recreation &
Wellness Center.

UCM Success
The University of Central Missouri has a long and
rich history of excellence in athletics, both on the field
of play and in the classroom.
Outstanding teams, combined with some of the
finest facilities in Division II athletics give UCM’s
students, faculty and staff one more aspect of college
life to enjoy with pride.
Always a contender for conference titles,
Central Missouri belongs to the 14-member Mid-
America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, which
is recognized nationwide as one of the strongest
conferences in all of NCAA Division II.
Since 1983, the tenure of Athletic Director
Jerry Hughes, UCM has won or shared 146 MIAA
championships, more than any other league school.
All-time, the Mules have taken home 140 titles, while
the Jennies are at 60.
Central Missouri has won six national
championships since 1980 (men’s and women’s
basketball in 1984--the first school in NCAA history
to win both titles in the same season--baseball in
1994 and 2003, women’s bowling in 2003 and men’s
basketball in 2014), and eight overall.
The Jennies volleyball team has been to the
NCAA Tournament every season for the past 31
years, and the Mules have won 17 MIAA Indoor
Track & Field titles in the last 20 years, and 10 of the
last 14 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field crowns. The
Mules baseball squad has made 20 NCAA Tournament
appearances in the last 21 seasons, including 13
Division II World Series berths in that span.
Seven UCM teams captured MIAA
Championships in 2013-14, the most of any school
in conference history and the second time UCM has
accomplished the feat. Six teams finished in the top
10 in the nation via ranking or place. Mules Basketball
won the NCAA-II National Championship, Mules
Golf was fifth, Jennies Volleyball was sixth as was
Jennies Outdoor Track & Field, Jennies Bowling
finished in seventh as did Jennies Indoor Track &
Field
Individually, UCM had 31 different All-America
seasons and performances. They also took home three
individual national championships. Erin Alewine
captured the pentathlon (indoor) title, while Heavin
Warner captured the hammer throw crown (outdoor)
for track & field and Frank Cagnina won the 149 lb.
national title for Mules Wrestling.
UCM student-athletes once again excelled in the
classroom with a department-wide cumulative GPA
of 3.0. UCM had 220 student-athletes named to the
MIAA Academic Honor Roll, including 17 Academic
Excellence Awards for student-athletes having 4.0
GPAs and 41 Scholar-Athlete Awards with student-
athletes having at least a 3.5 GPA and earning All-
MIAA honors in their respective sports. In addition,
12 UCM student-athletes were named to the Academic
All-Region Teams in their respective sports with seven
earning Academic All-America honors.

	Mule History
Mule #1 - Gizmo, after Wold War II
Take a Mule Refresher and Learn What’s
So Special about Missouri’s State Animal
Often called mankind’s most successful hybrid, mules are the
offspring of crossing a male donkey or jack with a female horse
or mare. Since they can’t reproduce, mules have been bred one
generation at a time for more than 3,000 years.
A strong, resourceful beast of burden, the mule can outwork,
outpull, outlive and outsmart a horse of similar size and type.
In 1995, the mule became Missouri’s official state animal, but
the long-eared creatures have been known as “Missouri Mules”
long before then.
The term, “Missouri Mules,” was used casually until it
became famous at the historic 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. At
that exposition a six-mule hitch belonging to W. A. Elgin of
Platte County swept all competition, and a mule from a Morgan
County farm received the $10,000 Mayor’s Award.
Newspaper accounts of this show-ring prowess brought
worldwide attention to the state’s mule breeders and helped
assure that the largest and finest animals would be known as
“Missouri Mules.”
Many people assume that the relationship of mules and
jennies is the same as that of siblings, but jennies are female
donkeys. So, the relationship of mules and jennies is really the
same as nephew/niece and aunt. Jenny is a common name but
technically a female donkey is a jennet.
Popular with farmers and settlers because of its hardy nature,
Missouri Mules pulled pioneer wagons to the Wild West and
played a crucial role in moving troops, artillery and supplies in
several wars. In fact, many of the mules used in World War I
were shipped by train from Warrensburg.
The mule’s affiliation with Central Missouri dates back to
the early 1920s. When the 1921-22 school year began, school
officials decided “Normals” and “Teachers” were no longer
appropriate nicknames for UCM’s athletic teams. Therefore, the
school’s Athletic Committee established a contest that promised
the winner a three-year postgraduate subscription of the school
newspaper. More than 80 suggestions were received, but the
winning entry was submitted by John Thomason of Chilhowee,
class of 1924, who felt at least one Missouri team should be
known as “Mules.”
Central Missouri’s fifth mascot - Mancow - is the university’s
first real Missouri mule. The line-back brown mule comes
from Paradise Mules in Belle, Mo. It took several months for
farm manager Dave Ewing to find the perfect mule. He was
determined to acquire the right mule trained to remain calm
around big crowds and loud noises - that game cannon gets loud!
Mancow the Mule is the second UCM mule to be tall (14.1
hands), a result of her thoroughbred heritage. The university’s
first three mules were Shetland Pony breeds. She’s the second
mule to be presented to the university as a gift.
Erich “Mancow” Muller, ‘88, made a gift to purchase the new
mascot. Abbedale, her immediate predecessor, was donated to
the university by 1938 alumnus and well-known mule producer,
Sam Smiser from Newhall, Calif. The 10-year-old mare mule
represented the university at home football games and other
events. UCM agriculture students care for her at Prussing Farm,
a few miles east of Warrensburg on Division Road.
Following her first appearance at the 2004 Missouri State
Fair, Mancow saw her first game action, as Central Missouri
hosted MIAA-rival Northwest Missouri State on Sept. 11.
Top 10 Reasons to Admire a Mule
	10. Affectionate and loving as a dog
	9. Can carry heavy loads, up to 300 pounds
	8. Rarely miss when they aim to kick something
	7. Jump amazing heights from a stand-still start (go watch a mule jump at a
		 county fair - it’s amazing!)
	6. Have a laid-back style and won’t be rushed
	5. Valued so highly, once bought sight unseen
	4. Inspire attitudes - cum mula peperit (when a mule foals), similar to once in a
		 blue moon
	3. Knows when to quit (hence its reputation for stubbornness)
	2. Intelligent and not afraid of working
	1. Because it became our mascot in 1922, over the skunk, bobcat and

Mule #4 - Abbedale in the early
1980s
Central Missouri’s Mancow is the only live mascot in the Mid-
America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

Warrensburg, Missouri is a friendly community of 18,000
people near the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Missouri
Route 13. It is located just 40 miles southeast of suburban
Kansas City, with its many cultural offerings, entertainment
options and professional sports franchises.
The county seat of Johnson County, Warrensburg is just four
hours from St. Louis and three hours from Branson, Mo., with
easy access by highway, Amtrak, or Greyhound bus. Other
recreational opportunities include the beautiful Lake of the
Ozarks 90 minutes to the southeast.
Warrensburg is a city that emerged from a frontier gathering
place more than 150 years ago. In 1833, a blacksmith from
Kentucky named Martin Warren chose a well-travelled spot
along an Osage Indian Trail to build a cabin and set up his
blacksmith shop. His shop served as an informal gathering place
for local farmers. Three years after moving to Missouri, Mr.
Warren’s shop was named the county seat of the newly created
County of Johnson. The township was named Warren’s Burg
in honor of the local blacksmith, and in 1855, the township was
incorporated and became the City of Warrensburg. It is that
same strong midwestern work ethic displayed by its founder,
and the same friendly
atmosphere shown by
his neighbors that may
be seen in Warrensburg
today.
In the late 1800s and early
1900s Warrensburg was
considered the Missouri
Mule Capital because of
the Horse and Mule Barn
operated by the Jones
Brothers on Railroad
Street. Mules from the
area won prizes at the
State Fair (located just 30 minutes east in Sedalia, Mo.) and at
even larger expositions like the one in St. Louis in 1904. The
mule barn carried the motto, “Through these portals pass the
meanest mules on earth.”
Warrensburg is home to many
historic sites, including “Blind”
Boone Park, the historic
Johnson County Courthouse,
the Missouri Pacific Train
Depot, and many historical
churches.
It is also the site of the Old
Drum Memorial Statue, in
honor of Old Drum, the hound
shot and killed by his owner’s
neighbor in 1869. Old Drum
was eulogized by George Graham Vest on September 23, 1870:
“The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can
have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts
him and the one that never proves ungrateful or
treacherous is his dog.”
Today the city’s Park Department has eight park areas with
a total of 326
acres, and a
Community Center
which offers
a wide variety
of recreational
activities.
Two public
golf courses are
available in town --
one at the Hidden
Pines Country Club,
and another at Pertle
Springs, operated
by the University of
Central Missouri.
Other attractions
in the area include
Powell Gardens, a
1,250+ botanical
garden just 12 miles
west of Warrensburg
on Missouri
Highway 50 that contains hiking trails, picnic areas, and
seasonal displays; Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster,
Mo., home of the B-2 Bomber; Knob Noster State Park; and the
Missouri State Fair, held each August in Sedalia, Mo.
Of course, visitors to Warrensburg can also take in the exciting
athletic events and various cultural experiences provided at the
University of Central Missouri.

UCM Multipurpose Building -- Home of the Jennies
Considered one of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation, the
Multipurpose Building is in its 39th year of service to the university. The
$5.5 million facility was built at no expense to the State of Missouri, as
financing was accomplished solely through student fees.
The “Multi” truly lives up to its name, as it is one of the busiest places
on campus. In addition to being the home of Mules and Jennies
basketball and indoor track and field, Jennies volleyball, and Mules
wrestling, the facility is used by university students, faculty, and staff,
as well as the general public.
Designed primarily for recreational use, the building features a spacious
main arena with a six-lane track, a swimming pool, two indoor handball/
racquetball courts, areas for free and universal weights, an activities area,
locker rooms, meeting rooms, and offices for UCM’s Intercollegiate
Athletics staff. The main arena can accommodate four basketball or
six volleyball courts at one time or all of the events for an indoor track
meet.
Seating capacity in the Multipurpose Building is 8,500 for basketball
and volleyball, making it the largest such facility in the MIAA. It also
seats 1,640 fans for indoor track meets and 11,000 people for
concerts.
Numerous special events take place in the Multi each year. It has
hosted the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s state
volleyball tournament since 1988, while state high-school playoff
games for basketball are also played annually in the building.
In addition, the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are
contested every other year in the Multipurpose Building. The facility is
also used for Central’s annual commencement ceremonies and for major
concerts.
The Multi underwent a major renovation during the summer of 1998.
An inlaid-wood floor was installed in the main arena, replacing most of
the original Tartan surface and eliminating the need for the portable-
wood floor that had been used for basketball since 1988, while the
running track was resurfaced and new jumping and vaulting pits were
created for track and field.
Previous improvements include the addition of a new scoreboard,
containing a four-color message center manufactured by Daktronics,
in 1986, the purchase of two Sport Courts® for volleyball in 1995 and
1998 and the installation of new bleachers on the north and south sides
in 2008.
The first basketball game was played in the Multi on November 27,
1976, when the Mules defeated Midland Lutheran College 92-75. The
Jennies played their first contest in the building on December 8 of that
season, dropping a 66-44 decision to Tarkio College.
The Jennies posted their first win in the facility on January 7, 1977,
with a 76-42 victory over Grand View College. The Multi was formally
dedicated eight days later as the Mules beat Southwest Missouri State
University 90-62.
In 38 seasons in the building, the Jennies have compiled a 429-
93 record (.822) They have also hosted eight NCAA or AIAW regional
tournaments in the facility.
The Multi was designed by the architectural firm of Mantel and Teeter of
Kansas City, Mo. It is managed by Karen Hibdon.

Coming off the program’s first outright MIAA regular season championship in
23 years, the Jennies basketball team has a tall task of defending their title. The
team is blending in seven newcomers to help replace six players, including two
starters from the 2013-14 squad, as they go for their fourth consecutive NCAA
Tournament bid and fifth in the past six seasons overall.
11th year head coach Dave Slifer welcomes an influx of new players to help
offset the losses of the MIAA Offensive Player of the Year, Keuna Flax and
Second Team All-MIAA selection BreAnna Lewis.
“I’ve been in this game a long time and [Keuna} Flax made a lot of things
happen on the floor that I’ve never had a player do before,” Slifer said. “We will
have to find ways to fill in her scoring. We have some kids that are going to make
some significant contributions in the MIAA. We feel like we have the talent level
that should be able to compete every night.”
One of the returners that will be counted on heavily to shoulder the offensive
load is senior Justina Prairie Chief. Last season, the El Reno, Oklahoma native
played in 31 games,
averaging 3.0 points
and 3.5 rebound-,a
team high among
reserves. Her defense
is what separated her,
leading UCM reserves
with 10 blocked shots
and tallying 23 steals,
good for second among
bench players.
	 “[Prairie Chief] has
been the most pleasant
surprise I’ve had just
from watching film this
summer,” Slifer said.
“She made a lot of
good basketball plays,
playing behind Flax last
season. She is really
running well this year
and is in great shape
with a newfound
maturity. Last season she was a new player in this program but has definitely
become a leader this year.”
As Slifer assesses each position, he views point guard and forward as
strengths in 2014-15. The Jennies return seniors Breonna Embray and Brielle
Wattley and sophomore Andee Wahlert. At forward, 2013-14 All-MIAA Honorable
Mention selection Revonnia Howard will serve as the offense’s low-post threat.
“I think we have a three-headed moster at point guard,” Slifer said. “All three
can play the point and a little off guard as well, so we have some depth there.
Howard almost averaged a double-double last season, but she will have to be
a different player this year. She is going to be a go-to-player for us and we are
excited to see the progress she has made. She is running much better at this
time compared to last season.”
One of the Jennies most dependable starters from a season ago, Shelby
Winkelmann, will return after finishing the Jennies volleyball season later this
fall. Winkelmann’s MIAA Tournament performance last season merited a spot
on the MIAA All-Tournament Team, averaging 14.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and
shooting 70% (7-10) from 3-point range as the Jennies advanced to the MIAA
Tournament championship game for the second straight season.
“She is going to miss some games here early [because of volleyball] but I
think this year will be different for her,” Slifer said. “It will take her a little bit of
time to get back into it, but she is a competition junkie. She is a scorer and her
mobility should be much improved in year number two after her ACL injury.”
The Jennies’ offensive strategy will have a different look this year. Coach Slifer
will employ a lot more cutting and setting screens in order to create open looks
for shooters like Prairie Chief and Winkelmann. Transfer Jasmine Thompson,
who comes over from Texas-Pan American, will be counted on to provide the
Jennies with some offensive punch. During her junior season, she averaged
career highs with 9.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest, while shooting
32.4% (22-68) from behind the three-point line. She also blocked six shots and
set a career-high with 24 steals.
The Jennies will open up with a rematch against Minnesota State for the
second straight season. UCM won a 96-88 matchup last season in Warrensburg.
The game in Mankato will be the start of what Slifer believes to be a strong non-
conference slate.
“We have a good non-conference schedule because we owed some visits to
some coaches and teams and it will prepare us for the MIAA schedule later in
the season.”
Expectations remain high for the Jens, with conference championship
aspirations on their minds. Slifer and his group have their eyes set on an
MIAA championship ring, a trip to the regional tournament and an Elite Eight
appearance.
Coach Slifer will begin the season 21 wins shy of 600 in his 25-year coaching
career, but doesn’t get caught up in records or milestones. He is focused on
preparing his players for what should be an exciting brand of basketball.
“I’m not sure that any coach that is still coaching bothers to worry about the
number of wins [in a career],” Slifer said. “21 [wins] is a big number, but we feel
like we have the talent that we should be able to accomplish our goals.”
With a number of new faces, the Jennies look to defend their first
outright MIAA regular season conference title since 1990-91
2013-14 All-MIAA Honorable Mention forward
Revonnia Howard averaged 9.9 points and pulled down
a team-high 9.4 rebounds last season.

Dave Slifer
Head Coach
Dave Slifer enters his 11th season at the helm of the Jennies, compiling a 195-102 record at UCM.
In the 2013-14 season, Slifer guided Central Missouri to its best record in the last 23 years (26-5) and
the team’s first outright MIAA regular season title since 1990-91. The Jennies went on to win their first NCAA
Tournament game since the 2005-06 season in an 82-69 victory over Northern State in the Central Regional
quarterfinals on March 14, 2014.
He was named the WBCA Central Region Coach of the Year following the 2012-13 season after leading the
Jennies to a 24-6 record and their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the past four seasons.
Slifer picked up his 500th career victory in 2010-11, in a narrow 56-53 win at Missouri Western. He is the
sixth-winningest active coach in NCAA Division II women’s basketball with a 579-201 (.742) overall record.
	 At Central Missouri, Slifer
has coached three WBCA All-Americans, a CoSIDA Academic
All-American, as well as numerous all-region players, an MIAA
Freshman of the Year, and a Presidential Scholar. He has also
coached two academic all-MIAA, four academic all-districts, 22
All-MIAA, and 39 MIAA Academic Honor Roll honorees.
In the 2012-13 season, the Jennies qualified for the NCAA
Tournament for the second consecutive season as the No. 2
seed. The Jens’ 24 wins were the most in a season since 1989-
90. Forward Keuna Flax was honored as a Division II All-American
and was one of three Jennies named to the All-MIAA team.
In the 2011-12 season, the Jennies returned to the NCAA
Tournament, winning 20 games for the first time since 2005-06.
In the 2009-10 season, Slifer led the Jennies to their third
NCAA postseason appearance since his arrival, finishing with a
19-12 overall record and 13-7 MIAA mark. That year the Jens
played in the championship game of the MIAA Tournament and
pushed their way into the NCAA Tournament in Canyon, Texas.
In 2005-06, he led the Jennies to at least 20 wins for the
second consecutive season for the first time since 1995-96 and
1996-97, and consecutive NCAA
Tournament appearances for the first time since 1996-97 and 1997-98. The NCAA berth marked the 10th straight season he had taken a
team to the tournament.
In his first season, Slifer led the Jennies to a 23-8 overall record and a trip
to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000. The Jens also finished
third in the MIAA (13-5) and had a No. 25 final WBCA ranking.
Prior to UCM, Slifer was Missouri Western’s mentor, where he posted
a record of 205-69. The winningest coach in Missouri Western women’s
basketball history, he was named Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics
Association Coach of the Year three times and led Missouri Western to a pair
of MIAA titles, two MIAA Tournament Championships, and eight consecutive
NCAA Tournaments.
Before his stint at Missouri Western, Slifer served six seasons at Mount
Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He won at least 28 games all six
seasons, and led the Mustangs to six straight NAIA Tournaments, including
the Final Four in 1993-94 and 1994-95. Overall, Slifer produced a record of
178-30 (.856) at Mount Mercy.
Slifer received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mount
Mercy in 1982, and a master’s degree in business administration from
Eastern Illinois University in 1985.
He and his wife, Tammy, who is an assistant coach with the Jennies, have
three children: daughters Brittney and Maggie, and son D.J. Brittney played
for the Jennies from 2008-10 and D.J. played for the Mules from 2009-12.
Maggie is a junior at UCM.

Future-Focused Academics The world moves at a faster pace than ever before. UCM’s innovative programs use new technologies to keep students up to date on the latest changes in their fields of study. Our faculty members are accomplished in their fields as well. They bring their experiences in industry and academia to their classrooms for our on-campus students in Warrensburg and Lee’s Summit, as well as to their virtual classrooms through our online programs. Hands-on Experience Learning by doing is a cornerstone of our 150 academic programs. Through hands-on experiences, students take their knowledge from the classroom and apply it in real-life situations. Whether it’s conducting research with faculty members, developing a business plan for a local company or battling it out in a national criminal justice competition, UCM students graduate well prepared for the future with practical, applicable experience. Culture of Service For more than 140 years, UCM’s motto, “Education for Service,” has been embodied by students who volunteer countless hours assisting communities, businesses and non- profit agencies. This tradition continues today when student groups clear debris after a tornado or build homes for local families through Habitat for Humanity. Service has always been a foundation of the university. By learning at a university that values that service, UCM students continue to make an impact on their communities long after they graduate. Global Perspective UCM values diversity in thought, culture and people. As a result, the university takes a worldly perspective on education and prepares students to thrive in a globalized economy. UCM’s International Studies major examines global issues affecting human development, peace and security. The university’s study abroad programs connect students with more than 60 countries and 285 universities worldwide. UCM also has nearly 600 students from 47 different countries represented on campus. Experiencing these different ideas, cultures and people gives our students a unique perspective and prepares them for today’s global society.President Barack Obama spoke to a crowd of UCM students, faculty and staff, and Warrensburg residents on July 24, 2013 at the UCM Student Recreation & Wellness Center.

Since 1983, the tenure of Athletic Director Jerry Hughes, UCM has won or shared 146 MIAA championships, more than any other league school. All-time, the Mules have taken home 140 titles, while the Jennies are at 60. Central Missouri has won six national championships since 1980 (men’s and women’s basketball in 1984--the first school in NCAA history to win both titles in the same season--baseball in 1994 and 2003, women’s bowling in 2003 and men’s basketball in 2014), and eight overall. The Jennies volleyball team has been to the NCAA Tournament every season for the past 31 years, and the Mules have won 17 MIAA Indoor Track & Field titles in the last 20 years, and 10 of the last 14 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field crowns. The Mules baseball squad has made 20 NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 21 seasons, including 13 Division II World Series berths in that span. Seven UCM teams captured MIAA Championships in 2013-14, the most of any school in conference history and the second time UCM has accomplished the feat. Six teams finished in the top 10 in the nation via ranking or place. Mules Basketball won the NCAA-II National Championship, Mules Golf was fifth, Jennies Volleyball was sixth as was Jennies Outdoor Track & Field, Jennies Bowling finished in seventh as did Jennies Indoor Track & Field Individually, UCM had 31 different All-America seasons and performances. • 8. 6 U C M J E N N I E S BA S K E T BA L L UCMathletics.com Mule History Mule #1 - Gizmo, after Wold War II Take a Mule Refresher and Learn What’s So Special about Missouri’s State Animal Often called mankind’s most successful hybrid, mules are the offspring of crossing a male donkey or jack with a female horse or mare. Since they can’t reproduce, mules have been bred one generation at a time for more than 3,000 years. A strong, resourceful beast of burden, the mule can outwork, outpull, outlive and outsmart a horse of similar size and type. In 1995, the mule became Missouri’s official state animal, but the long-eared creatures have been known as “Missouri Mules” long before then. The term, “Missouri Mules,” was used casually until it became famous at the historic 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. At that exposition a six-mule hitch belonging to W. A. Elgin of Platte County swept all competition, and a mule from a Morgan County farm received the $10,000 Mayor’s Award. Newspaper accounts of this show-ring prowess brought worldwide attention to the state’s mule breeders and helped assure that the largest and finest animals would be known as “Missouri Mules.” Many people assume that the relationship of mules and jennies is the same as that of siblings, but jennies are female donkeys. So, the relationship of mules and jennies is really the same as nephew/niece and aunt. Jenny is a common name but technically a female donkey is a jennet. Popular with farmers and settlers because of its hardy nature, Missouri Mules pulled pioneer wagons to the Wild West and played a crucial role in moving troops, artillery and supplies in several wars. In fact, many of the mules used in World War I were shipped by train from Warrensburg. The mule’s affiliation with Central Missouri dates back to the early 1920s. When the 1921-22 school year began, school officials decided “Normals” and “Teachers” were no longer appropriate nicknames for UCM’s athletic teams. Therefore, the school’s Athletic Committee established a contest that promised the winner a three-year postgraduate subscription of the school newspaper. More than 80 suggestions were received, but the winning entry was submitted by John Thomason of Chilhowee, class of 1924, who felt at least one Missouri team should be known as “Mules.” Central Missouri’s fifth mascot - Mancow - is the university’s first real Missouri mule. The line-back brown mule comes from Paradise Mules in Belle, Mo. It took several months for farm manager Dave Ewing to find the perfect mule. He was determined to acquire the right mule trained to remain calm around big crowds and loud noises - that game cannon gets loud! Mancow the Mule is the second UCM mule to be tall (14.1 hands), a result of her thoroughbred heritage. The university’s first three mules were Shetland Pony breeds. She’s the second mule to be presented to the university as a gift. Erich “Mancow” Muller, ‘88, made a gift to purchase the new mascot. Abbedale, her immediate predecessor, was donated to the university by 1938 alumnus and well-known mule producer, Sam Smiser from Newhall, Calif. The 10-year-old mare mule represented the university at home football games and other events. UCM agriculture students care for her at Prussing Farm, a few miles east of Warrensburg on Division Road. Following her first appearance at the 2004 Missouri State Fair, Mancow saw her first game action, as Central Missouri hosted MIAA-rival Northwest Missouri State on Sept. 11. Top 10 Reasons to Admire a Mule 10. Affectionate and loving as a dog 9. Can carry heavy loads, up to 300 pounds 8. Rarely miss when they aim to kick something 7. Jump amazing heights from a stand-still start (go watch a mule jump at a county fair - it’s amazing!) 6. Have a laid-back style and won’t be rushed 5. Valued so highly, once bought sight unseen 4. Inspire attitudes - cum mula peperit (when a mule foals), similar to once in a blue moon 3. Knows when to quit (hence its reputation for stubbornness) 2. Intelligent and not afraid of working 1. Because it became our mascot in 1922, over the skunk, bobcat and hippopotamus! • 9. U C M J E N N I E S BA S K E T BA L L 7@UCMMULES • Facebook.com/UCMathletics Warrensburg, Missouri is a friendly community of 18,000 people near the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Missouri Route 13. It is located just 40 miles southeast of suburban Kansas City, with its many cultural offerings, entertainment options and professional sports franchises. The county seat of Johnson County, Warrensburg is just four hours from St. Louis and three hours from Branson, Mo., with easy access by highway, Amtrak, or Greyhound bus. Other recreational opportunities include the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks 90 minutes to the southeast. Warrensburg is a city that emerged from a frontier gathering place more than 150 years ago. In 1833, a blacksmith from Kentucky named Martin Warren chose a well-travelled spot along an Osage Indian Trail to build a cabin and set up his blacksmith shop. His shop served as an informal gathering place for local farmers. Three years after moving to Missouri, Mr. Warren’s shop was named the county seat of the newly created County of Johnson. The township was named Warren’s Burg in honor of the local blacksmith, and in 1855, the township was incorporated and became the City of Warrensburg. It is that same strong midwestern work ethic displayed by its founder, and the same friendly atmosphere shown by his neighbors that may be seen in Warrensburg today. In the late 1800s and early 1900s Warrensburg was considered the Missouri Mule Capital because of the Horse and Mule Barn operated by the Jones Brothers on Railroad Street. Mules from the area won prizes at the State Fair (located just 30 minutes east in Sedalia, Mo.) and at even larger expositions like the one in St. Louis in 1904. The mule barn carried the motto, “Through these portals pass the meanest mules on earth.” Warrensburg is home to many historic sites, including “Blind” Boone Park, the historic Johnson County Courthouse, the Missouri Pacific Train Depot, and many historical churches. It is also the site of the Old Drum Memorial Statue, in honor of Old Drum, the hound shot and killed by his owner’s neighbor in 1869. Old Drum was eulogized by George Graham Vest on September 23, 1870: “The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.” Today the city’s Park Department has eight park areas with a total of 326 acres, and a Community Center which offers a wide variety of recreational activities. Two public golf courses are available in town -- one at the Hidden Pines Country Club, and another at Pertle Springs, operated by the University of Central Missouri. Other attractions in the area include Powell Gardens, a 1,250+ botanical garden just 12 miles west of Warrensburg on Missouri Highway 50 that contains hiking trails, picnic areas, and seasonal displays; Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, Mo., home of the B-2 Bomber; Knob Noster State Park; and the Missouri State Fair, held each August in Sedalia, Mo. Of course, visitors to Warrensburg can also take in the exciting athletic events and various cultural experiences provided at the University of Central Missouri. • 10. 8 U C M J E N N I E S BA S K E T BA L L UCMathletics.com UCM Multipurpose Building -- Home of the Jennies Considered one of the finest facilities of its kind in the nation, the Multipurpose Building is in its 39th year of service to the university. The $5.5 million facility was built at no expense to the State of Missouri, as financing was accomplished solely through student fees. The “Multi” truly lives up to its name, as it is one of the busiest places on campus. In addition to being the home of Mules and Jennies basketball and indoor track and field, Jennies volleyball, and Mules wrestling, the facility is used by university students, faculty, and staff, as well as the general public. Designed primarily for recreational use, the building features a spacious main arena with a six-lane track, a swimming pool, two indoor handball/ racquetball courts, areas for free and universal weights, an activities area, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and offices for UCM’s Intercollegiate Athletics staff. The main arena can accommodate four basketball or six volleyball courts at one time or all of the events for an indoor track meet. Seating capacity in the Multipurpose Building is 8,500 for basketball and volleyball, making it the largest such facility in the MIAA. It also seats 1,640 fans for indoor track meets and 11,000 people for concerts. Numerous special events take place in the Multi each year. It has hosted the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s state volleyball tournament since 1988, while state high-school playoff games for basketball are also played annually in the building. In addition, the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are contested every other year in the Multipurpose Building. The facility is also used for Central’s annual commencement ceremonies and for major concerts. The Multi underwent a major renovation during the summer of 1998. An inlaid-wood floor was installed in the main arena, replacing most of the original Tartan surface and eliminating the need for the portable- wood floor that had been used for basketball since 1988, while the running track was resurfaced and new jumping and vaulting pits were created for track and field. Previous improvements include the addition of a new scoreboard, containing a four-color message center manufactured by Daktronics, in 1986, the purchase of two Sport Courts® for volleyball in 1995 and 1998 and the installation of new bleachers on the north and south sides in 2008. The first basketball game was played in the Multi on November 27, 1976, when the Mules defeated Midland Lutheran College 92-75. The Jennies played their first contest in the building on December 8 of that season, dropping a 66-44 decision to Tarkio College. The Jennies posted their first win in the facility on January 7, 1977, with a 76-42 victory over Grand View College. The Multi was formally dedicated eight days later as the Mules beat Southwest Missouri State University 90-62. In 38 seasons in the building, the Jennies have compiled a 429- 93 record (.822) They have also hosted eight NCAA or AIAW regional tournaments in the facility. The Multi was designed by the architectural firm of Mantel and Teeter of Kansas City, Mo. • 14. 12 U C M J E N N I E S BA S K E T BA L L UCMathletics.com Coming off the program’s first outright MIAA regular season championship in 23 years, the Jennies basketball team has a tall task of defending their title. The team is blending in seven newcomers to help replace six players, including two starters from the 2013-14 squad, as they go for their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid and fifth in the past six seasons overall. 11th year head coach Dave Slifer welcomes an influx of new players to help offset the losses of the MIAA Offensive Player of the Year, Keuna Flax and Second Team All-MIAA selection BreAnna Lewis. “I’ve been in this game a long time and [Keuna} Flax made a lot of things happen on the floor that I’ve never had a player do before,” Slifer said. “We will have to find ways to fill in her scoring. We have some kids that are going to make some significant contributions in the MIAA. We feel like we have the talent level that should be able to compete every night.” One of the returners that will be counted on heavily to shoulder the offensive load is senior Justina Prairie Chief. Last season, the El Reno, Oklahoma native played in 31 games, averaging 3.0 points and 3.5 rebound-,a team high among reserves. Her defense is what separated her, leading UCM reserves with 10 blocked shots and tallying 23 steals, good for second among bench players. “[Prairie Chief] has been the most pleasant surprise I’ve had just from watching film this summer,” Slifer said. “She made a lot of good basketball plays, playing behind Flax last season. She is really running well this year and is in great shape with a newfound maturity. Last season she was a new player in this program but has definitely become a leader this year.” As Slifer assesses each position, he views point guard and forward as strengths in 2014-15. The Jennies return seniors Breonna Embray and Brielle Wattley and sophomore Andee Wahlert. At forward, 2013-14 All-MIAA Honorable Mention selection Revonnia Howard will serve as the offense’s low-post threat. “I think we have a three-headed moster at point guard,” Slifer said. “All three can play the point and a little off guard as well, so we have some depth there. Howard almost averaged a double-double last season, but she will have to be a different player this year. She is going to be a go-to-player for us and we are excited to see the progress she has made. She is running much better at this time compared to last season.” One of the Jennies most dependable starters from a season ago, Shelby Winkelmann, will return after finishing the Jennies volleyball season later this fall. Winkelmann’s MIAA Tournament performance last season merited a spot on the MIAA All-Tournament Team, averaging 14.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and shooting 70% (7-10) from 3-point range as the Jennies advanced to the MIAA Tournament championship game for the second straight season. “She is going to miss some games here early [because of volleyball] but I think this year will be different for her,” Slifer said. “It will take her a little bit of time to get back into it, but she is a competition junkie. She is a scorer and her mobility should be much improved in year number two after her ACL injury.” The Jennies’ offensive strategy will have a different look this year. Coach Slifer will employ a lot more cutting and setting screens in order to create open looks for shooters like Prairie Chief and Winkelmann. Transfer Jasmine Thompson, who comes over from Texas-Pan American, will be counted on to provide the Jennies with some offensive punch. During her junior season, she averaged career highs with 9.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest, while shooting 32.4% (22-68) from behind the three-point line. She also blocked six shots and set a career-high with 24 steals. The Jennies will open up with a rematch against Minnesota State for the second straight season. UCM won a 96-88 matchup last season in Warrensburg. The game in Mankato will be the start of what Slifer believes to be a strong non- conference slate. “We have a good non-conference schedule because we owed some visits to some coaches and teams and it will prepare us for the MIAA schedule later in the season.” Expectations remain high for the Jens, with conference championship aspirations on their minds. Slifer and his group have their eyes set on an MIAA championship ring, a trip to the regional tournament and an Elite Eight appearance. Coach Slifer will begin the season 21 wins shy of 600 in his 25-year coaching career, but doesn’t get caught up in records or milestones. He is focused on preparing his players for what should be an exciting brand of basketball. “I’m not sure that any coach that is still coaching bothers to worry about the number of wins [in a career],” Slifer said. “21 [wins] is a big number, but we feel like we have the talent that we should be able to accomplish our goals.” With a number of new faces, the Jennies look to defend their first outright MIAA regular season conference title since 1990-91 2013-14 All-MIAA Honorable Mention forward Revonnia Howard averaged 9.9 points and pulled down a team-high 9.4 rebounds last season. In the 2013-14 season, Slifer guided Central Missouri to its best record in the last 23 years (26-5) and the team’s first outright MIAA regular season title since 1990-91. The Jennies went on to win their first NCAA Tournament game since the 2005-06 season in an 82-69 victory over Northern State in the Central Regional quarterfinals on March 14, 2014. He was named the WBCA Central Region Coach of the Year following the 2012-13 season after leading the Jennies to a 24-6 record and their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the past four seasons. Slifer picked up his 500th career victory in 2010-11, in a narrow 56-53 win at Missouri Western. He is the sixth-winningest active coach in NCAA Division II women’s basketball with a 579-201 (.742) overall record. At Central Missouri, Slifer has coached three WBCA All-Americans, a CoSIDA Academic All-American, as well as numerous all-region players, an MIAA Freshman of the Year, and a Presidential Scholar. He has also coached two academic all-MIAA, four academic all-districts, 22 All-MIAA, and 39 MIAA Academic Honor Roll honorees. In the 2012-13 season, the Jennies qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season as the No. 2 seed. The Jens’ 24 wins were the most in a season since 1989- 90. Forward Keuna Flax was honored as a Division II All-American and was one of three Jennies named to the All-MIAA team. In the 2011-12 season, the Jennies returned to the NCAA Tournament, winning 20 games for the first time since 2005-06. In the 2009-10 season, Slifer led the Jennies to their third NCAA postseason appearance since his arrival, finishing with a 19-12 overall record and 13-7 MIAA mark. That year the Jens played in the championship game of the MIAA Tournament and pushed their way into the NCAA Tournament in Canyon, Texas. In 2005-06, he led the Jennies to at least 20 wins for the second consecutive season for the first time since 1995-96 and 1996-97, and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since 1996-97 and 1997-98. The NCAA berth marked the 10th straight season he had taken a team to the tournament. In his first season, Slifer led the Jennies to a 23-8 overall record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000. The Jens also finished third in the MIAA (13-5) and had a No. 25 final WBCA ranking. Prior to UCM, Slifer was Missouri Western’s mentor, where he posted a record of 205-69. The winningest coach in Missouri Western women’s basketball history, he was named Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Coach of the Year three times and led Missouri Western to a pair of MIAA titles, two MIAA Tournament Championships, and eight consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Before his stint at Missouri Western, Slifer served six seasons at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He won at least 28 games all six seasons, and led the Mustangs to six straight NAIA Tournaments, including the Final Four in 1993-94 and 1994-95. Overall, Slifer produced a record of 178-30 (.856) at Mount Mercy. Slifer received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mount Mercy in 1982, and a master’s degree in business administration from Eastern Illinois University in 1985. He and his wife, Tammy, who is an assistant coach with the Jennies, have three children: daughters Brittney and Maggie, and son D.J. Brittney played for the Jennies from 2008-10 and D.J. played for the Mules from 2009-12. Maggie is a junior at UCM. Dave Slifer
