Broadcast Playout on AWS

DPC 2016 - 53 Minutes or Less - Architecting For Failure
An increasing amount of web and business applications are hosted on the cloud. It’s easy: a few clicks, api calls or a script written with your favourite IaaS provider and your application is launched and available to your consumers.
That’s the problem, it’s deceptively easy to make an application available. It’s much harder to make an application reliably available. The much touted “four nines” - 99.99% availability means your application must be consistently available for all but 53 minutes a year.
Using AWS as an example this talk covers the choices you must make when hosting an application from the network up. Choices around Regions, Availability Zones, Service Discovery, Deployment and Maintenance all have a major impact on up time.
The practice of “Chaos Engineering” made famous by Netflix is demonstrated as a way to validate the choices you’ve made and help prepare you for the worst.

Scaling the cloud for UHD and HEVC

Deep Dive into AWS ECS and Spot Instances at Scale

Media companies need to deliver on that consumer expectation while at the same time optimizing for costs. They need to produce content for the highest quality viewing experience, but have the ability to deliver to a wide variety of quality levels. They need an infrastructure that scales automatically and just works, whether it is a full 4K production workflow, subsequent archive and content management, or a multi-device streaming. ECS in action
ECS in action provides an overview of using Amazon ECS for container deployment and management. Key features of ECS include a good web console, auto recovery of failed containers, and rolling upgrades. With ECS, containers are deployed across a cluster of Amazon EC2 instances with ECS agents that interface with the Docker daemon. The persistence layer is kept outside of containers for easier management. While ECS met their needs, the author notes some requested features like global services and improved logging/monitoring integration.

Scaling the cloud for UHD and HEVC

It launched with over 200 hours of UHD content which required 30x more encoding time compared to 1080p due to the higher resolution and more complex HEVC codec. Future work includes additional optimizations and moving to newer EC2 instances with more cores and memory.
Deep Dive into AWS ECS and Spot Instances at Scale
This document summarizes a presentation about using Amazon ECS and Spot Instances at scale. It discusses the challenges of managing many EC2 instances for microservices and how ECS provides a fully managed container service with auto scaling and cost optimization using Spot Instances. 4K video is fast setting the minimum bar for content capture, be it consumer, prosumer, professional, episodic or theatrical. This in turn is leading to more demanding infrastructure requirements for media production, management and distribution. Consumers now have a variety of viewing devices and expect an optimal viewing experience for all of them, regardless of screen size or bandwidth availability. Media companies need to deliver on that consumer expectation while at the same time optimizing for costs. They need to produce content for the highest quality viewing experience, but have the ability to deliver to a wide variety of quality levels. They need an infrastructure that scales automatically and just works, whether it is a full 4K production workflow, subsequent archive and content management, or a multi-device streaming. In addition to discussing the way in which an agile cloud infrastructure can meet the demands of a 4K workflow, this session will cover cutting edge technologies like remote application visualization and server-less workflow automation that can greatly help today's media companies in the race to serve their gadget savvy consumer.

We delved into their specific needs, examined the specifics in their shopping preferences, and analyzed their preferred methods for accessing information and making purchases within a marketplace.
