• Talk to your parents about the registration
process
• Ask questions
• Think about your personal goals
• Review the registration guide
• Select 6 elective options
Today, we will be presenting the information you will need to prepare for the upcoming Titan Registration. Before we get started, make sure you have out a piece of paper and a pencil because you’ll probably want jot down notes about courses, & later in the presentation, we’ll be creating YOUR dream schedule for next year.
:18 We know that sometimes registration can be confusing & you want to make the right decisions for your future. If you have questions after this presentation, visit the Counseling webpage. If you can’t find the answers you are looking for there, Mrs. McCall, Mrs. Milam, & Mrs. Taylor are always happy to help.
:24The best resource for registration is the Roanoke County Registration Guide. The guide is available 24 hours a day on the Roanoke County Public Schools webpage. The registration guide gives details about every class offered here at Hidden Valley as well as other important information about your education such as graduation requirements.
The most important aspect of registration is making sure you enroll in the classes you need to receive the diploma of your choice. There are two types of diplomas – Standard and Advanced Studies. Both diploma types require 4 years of English; however, a Standard diploma requires less Math, Science, & Social Science than an Advanced Studies Diploma. Another major difference between the two diploma types is a Standard Diploma does not require World Language; an Advanced Studies Diploma does. Both diplomas require two full credits of Health & PE as well as ONE credit Personal Finance before graduation.
The rising 9th through 11th grade classes have slightly different requirements than the class of 2016. In order to achieve the Standard Diploma, students in these grades must pass an Industry Certification Exam in a Career and Technical course in addition to the sequential elective requirement.
Grades 9 through 11 are required to complete an online course before graduation. If you take the face to face economics and personal finance class, you will satisfy this requirement.
In addition to passing the necessary classes for graduation, all students must acquire Verified Credits. That means students must pass the class as well as the SOL in certain subject areas. For a Advanced Studies Diploma, students must have 9 verified credits prior to graduation – 2 in each subject area & 1 student choice. For a Standard Diploma, 6 verified credits are required – 2 in English, 1 in each subject area, & 1 student choice, Remember: Every course does not have an SOL attached to it, so be certain that you are enrolled in classes which satisfy the verified credits you need.
Roanoke County offers many Virtual courses. All Roanoke County students are able to take two FREE virtual courses. Students will be required to take a study hall per virtual course in order to participate. If you want to take an online course as a supplemental course during the summer or during the school year the cost is $400 for one full credit course.
Rising 9th through 11th grade students will be required to complete 1 virtual course to fulfill graduation requirements for both standard and advanced diplomas.
AP Psychology is a course offering, but will not be available to take as the free course.
If you are interested in taking the free or supplemental virtual course, please tell your counselor at your registration appointment.
Free Virtual courses must be requested during registration. Any late requests will result in the student being charged the supplemental fee.
Now that we’ve reviewed the requirements for graduation, let’s start making your dream schedule.
Be sure to write down all of the core courses you plan to take next year along with 6 additional elective options. Bring this paper with you to your registration appointment so that you are prepared.
First, let’s choose an English course that’s right for you. English offers classes ranging from General to AP in each grade level. Write down the course you hope to take next year.
Now, write down the next level of math that you plan to take. This could be any course from Algebra I to AP Calculus.
There are a wide variety of Science courses – everything from Earth Science to Biology to Chemistry or even an AP science class could be an option here.
Social Science is the last core subject area. Write down the course you plan to take – Juniors, don’t forget you are required to sign up for US/VA History. Seniors – you should be signing up for a Government class to take care of your graduation requirements
Now that you have all of your core classes written down, let’s look at the elective options for next year. Don’t forget everyone MUST have 6 back up electives when they arrive to their registration appointment.
At this point in the presentation, you will hear a short overview of the course electives offered at Hidden Valley High School and throughout Roanoke County Public Schools. The presentation will be available on the website if you need to review it with your parents before meeting with your counselor.
The page numbers on each of the slides directs you the course descriptions in the registration guide. Once again, you can find the registration guide on Roanoke County and Hidden Valley’s web sites.
We are excited to announce that the Air Force JROTC will be a course offering next year. The AFJROTC is a program which promotes citizenship, character, leadership, and fitness while also educating students on aerospace technology. Being enrolled in the JROTC program does not mean you have to enlist in the military; however, completing the Air Force JROTC program holds many benefits to those who plan to enlist in the military after high school or participate in a college-based ROTC program by improving their initial military ranking upon enlistment. Be sure to know that students in this program will be required to wear an official Air Force JROTC uniform once per week as well as provide their own transportation to and from the program.

:13 Students can also sign up for study halls. You don’t get credit for study halls, but you do get an opportunity to get extra help, work on homework, & most importantly keep your grades high!
Some Juniors or Seniors may be eligible for an Early Release – which means the student gets to leave school a block or two early if he or she has consistent transportation. Early release can only be requested by students in a co-op course during the registration period.
Seniors who happen to have a study hall at the beginning or end of their schedule, can apply to Ms. Stegall for early release.
Students must be in good standing with academics, discipline and attendance throughout the school year in order to keep an early release. The administrators can revoke the early release if the criteria are not continuously met.
The ability for a student to have early release depends on the other courses in his or her schedule. Schedules will not be changed to allow for early release.

There are several classes offered in the Technology Education department. Classes range from digital photography to Engineering & Architecture. If you have questions about any of these classes, see Mr. Allen in Room 303.
In addition to regular electives, there are also a number of a specialty programs students can enroll in such as the Burton Center for Arts & Technology, the Regional Governor’s School, & the Virginia Western Regional Academy for Advanced Technology.
Students interested in attending Burton or the Virginia Western Academy should tell their counselor during their registration appointment. All Burton blocks will be during the regular school day & school bus transportation will be provided.
Students interested in attending the Regional Governor’s School should attend the informational meetings to get an application. The dates for meetings are posted on the Counseling webpage.
Burton has many programs that may be of interest to you. If these programs are of interest to you, be sure to let your counselor know. Check the registration guide for descriptions of each of the Burton programs.
While we encourage all students to select electives of interest to them, please be aware of this important message from administration. “At any time, administration reserves the right to drop an elective choice and add in an mandatory remediation period if we believe extra support will benefit your academic success at Hidden Valley High School.”
We understand that you may change your mind about some of your course requests after your initial registration appointment. If you would like to make changes to your course request, you must complete the course request change form, have it signed by your parent or guardian & return it to the Counseling Department by the date indicated on this PowerPoint and the course request change form. Forms are available in the counseling lobby as well as on the counseling webpage.
Next year, schedule changes will be very limited. Schedule changes will only be considered in compliance with the Roanoke County Public Schools Schedule change policy. If you have questions, please read the letter from Dr. Nicely in the front of the registration guide which reviews the policy and discusses the reasoning for limited schedule changes during the upcoming school year.
