Dear Friends & Supporters:
At Swords to Plowshares, preventing and ending veteran homelessness is at the core of what we do. We take pride in working to restore dignity, hope, and self-sufficiency
to all veterans in need. Our model of care is based on the philosophy that the obstacles veterans may face require an integrated network of support, which is why we provide comprehensive wraparound services.
The main point of entry to our critical services is through our Frontline Drop-in Center. Once there, our intake staff and case managers address veterans’ immediate needs and then continue to work with them on a long-term plan that will utilize our programs and services to improve their health, economic and housing stability, and overall well-being.
As the needs of the veterans we serve continues to change, so must our programs and services. Earlier this year, to keep up these needs, our Frontline Drop-in Center launched several client-focused groups and activities, including: a wellness group for LGBTQ veterans, a women veterans group, a support group for homeless veterans, a harm reduction group and 12-step meetings for veterans, a chess club, and dedicated movie times.
Over the years, Swords to Plowshares has helped countless numbers of veterans overcome adversity, and our programs and services continue to evolve to meet the needs of our clients. These new groups and activities at our Drop-in Center were developed thanks to the input of our frontline staff, and have been well-received and attended. However, the critical services these groups and activities provide need your support. In this edition of our newsletter, you will read stories that highlight the impact of our frontline staff and a few of those who have recently benefited from the services our Drop-in Center provides. 7. Good evening! We are proud to present “A Black & White Ball” Celebrating
20 Years of the JDRF Hope Gala. This is an exciting anniversary to celebrate
and we thank you for your support and for sharing this evening with us.
Special thanks to our sponsors, patrons, donors and volunteers who
graciously contribute their time, energy and financial support to make this
such a memorable, high quality and successful event. Because of these
combined efforts, we are able to provide you with an exceptional evening.
Tonight we are pleased to honor Richard Sass. His work in the diabetes field
has been - and still is -groundbreaking. He has definitely made a positive
difference in the lives of those living with type 1 diabetes and their families.
Twenty years ago, this Chapter honored him at our very first fundraising Gala.
Today, he is still dedicating his resources and work to improve the lives of
others. We believe that it is fitting that we recognize him for his ongoing
commitment to the diabetes community.
Since 2001, JDRF has invested over $4.8 million dollars to fund T1D research
being done in Oregon. Your dollars are definitely helping to make a
difference in the many lives of those living with type 1 diabetes.
We encourage you to open your hearts, bid often and give generously to
Fund A Cure.
Sincerely,
Larry & Suzanne

9. Dear JDRF Hope Gala Guests,
I am pleased to be here tonight in support of diabetes research as
conducted by the JDRF. This year marks my 20th year as an entrepreneur
dedicated to providing useful tools for people with diabetes. In January 1995,
I founded a company devoted to bring a continuous glucose monitor (CGM)
product to market. We will finally meet that goal in 2017 following pivotal trials
and submitting that data to the FDA for a pre-market approval.
Like those that deal with diabetes day in and day out, we too have been
engaged in a long-term process of technology development that has seen its
ups and downs.
We brought Bayer Diabetes Care on as an exclusive distribution partner in
2005. They acquired the company and our elegant CGM technology in July
2008 and 3 months later Lehman Bros. collapsed. Following what turned into
a global economic crisis Bayer AG made the corporate decision to divest
themselves of their medical device portfolio, including iSense.
I reacquired the iSense CGM technology from Bayer HealthCare on November
12, 2013 and we have restarted the company. Our intention at iSense CGM
is clear and the intention of people with diabetes is clear: it’s all about tight
management and control of blood sugar. If that goal is achieved, people with
diabetes will live a long and productive life without complications. iSense CGM
is a technology that will enable that outcome.
It is a privilege to be honored alongside all of you in this embrace of people
with diabetes.
Warm regards,
Dick
