Network Rail & Innovate UK Railways SBRI Competition Briefing: Innovation in ...KTN
Network Rail, through Innovate UK, are to invest £2.88 million in two SBRI competitions to improve the safety and efficiency of our railways. The competitions launch on Monday 2nd December and this briefing event is aimed at providing you with more information on the competitions and how to apply. It is also an opportunity to meet others, network and form collaborative partnerships.
Up to £1.08m (+VAT) is available to support the key challenges faced by Network Rail: trespass at platform ends and edges (e.g. fare evasion, shortcuts) and incursion over platform ends and edges to commit crime (e.g. cable theft, vandalism). Network Rail is seeking to demonstrate the capability of physical and/or technological solutions to combat these challenges. The solution must be scalable to suit a variety of station environments and will be tested through trials at multiple live station environments.

5G - Enabled Road and Rail Transport Trials in the West MidlandsKTN
West Midlands 5G (WM5G), in partnership with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), West Midlands Combined Authority and in collaboration with Innovate UK, will invest up to £2.5 million in innovation projects that develop a new service or product. These must improve road and rail operational efficiency, provide better-connected transport or improve the experience for travellers.
Additional information on the 5G - enabled road and rail transport trials in the West Midlands competition call:
Project applications must focus on one of the use cases listed in the specific themes below and be suitable for trial in the West Midlands using the live 5G environment. They must demonstrate how 5G is essential to developing your new service or product and offers a significant enhancement compared to current mobile communications.
- Improvements in the operation of roads to reduce congestion, emissions and improve safety.
- Improvements in train, tram or bus services to enhance the operational efficiency or service offered.
- Better joined-up public transport services (bus, train, tram).
These projects must improve road and rail operational efficiency, provide better-connected transport, more cohesive travel solutions and transport information, or improve traveller experience.

The webinar provided background information on support available for both UK and European organisations in how to apply for funding and search for partners. KTN hosted this event on behalf of Innovate UK and it was delivered by Stafford Lloyd, National Contact Point ICT, Innovate UK, Viola Hay, Knowledge Transfer Manager - European Programmes, KTN, and Natalie Withenshaw, Marketing Manager, KTN. A big thank you to the Speakers and Organisers.
This webinar gave an overview of Horizon 2020 (H2020)* Cascade Funding opportunities, background information and support available for both UK and European organisations in how to apply for this funding and help with search for partners.
Cascade Funding, also known as Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP), is a mechanism of the European Commission to distribute public funds in order to create new companies, increase their scalability, SMEs and / or mid-cap companies, in the adoption or development of digital innovation.
The main objective of this financing method is to simplify administrative procedures with SMEs, thus allowing some projects financed by the EU to issue, in turn, open calls to obtain more funding.

17. The IET has introduced an Opt-In CPD
Monitoring Scheme in preparation for the
Engineering Council’s requirement for
Professional Engineering Institutions to monitor
CPD records by 2017.
http://www.theiet.org/membership/career/cpd/
If you read an article in E&T magazine, watch a
relevant programme on iet.tv or mainstream
television, attend a lecture or seminar or give up
your time to help young engineers develop, you
are undertaking CPD.
We have, therefore,
indicated CPD hours
against our events.
18. Activities of your committee
2014 - 2015
We have successfully organised and delivered a
programme of thirteen events with an average
attendance of 41. Included in this were the
Williams Grand Prix Collection, the presentation
on 4G to 5G by Professor Mathew Baker, a
Professional Registration Workshop and our Local
Network ‘Present Around the World’ competition
as well hosting the SW Area PATW Final.
As part of our intention to provide an events
programme for 2015-2016 aligned to members'
interests we took the initiative in becoming the
first LN to conduct a member survey regarding:
attendance patterns, means of getting event
information and registration details, views on
future topic preferences and to explore possible
future developments. We have been able to
incorporate much of the feedback into this events
programme and thanks must go to those who
participated.
19. We have actively continued with our initiatives
to inspire and engage with the next generation of
engineers through a greater association with local
schools and colleges. The new season ahead is
further aimed at raising the profile of the IET
and the Swindon LN which we will continue
through the STEM programme supported by
both the IET Education Department and Catalyst
Learning and Communication Ltd.
As part of this we are
again exhibiting with
a larger IET
education stand in the
Techno Zone at RAF
Fairford July 2016.
If any of these activities inspire you; please
volunteer and join us, there is always a
welcome for more help on the committee.
