RAGIN’ CAJUNS SOCCER/TRACK FACILITY
	 Located adjacent to M.L. “Tigue”
Moore Field in the Louisiana Ragin’
Cajuns Athletics complex is the Ragin’
Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility, one of the
most picturesque and modern facilities
in the south.
	 Bordered by beautiful southern
longleaf pines on two sides, the Ragin’
Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility seats
approximately 5,000 and contains new
amenities that benefit both the soccer
program and its fans.
The facility has been the permanent
homeforRagin’Cajunssoccersince2005
when the infield was reconstructed
to provide a regulation soccer field
complete with Hybrid Bermuda grass.
The field is surrounded by an eight-
lane, 400-meter track.
Prior to the new facility, the Cajuns
played the program’s first two seasons
at Carencro’s Moore Park (2000-01)
then spent three seasons at Cajun
Field (2002-04). Since moving to
their permanent home, the Ragin’
Cajuns have posted a 40-40-17 record,
highlighted by a school-record eight
victories in the 2010 season.
	 The Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track
facility was officially dedicated on
Aug. 28, 2005 prior to the soccer
team’s match with Tulsa, with the first
victory coming in a 1-0 decision over
Northwestern State on Sept. 2, 2005.
The venue has also played host to
both the 2006 Sun Belt Conference
Soccer Tournament and the Louisiana
HighSchoolSoccerCoachesAssociation
All-Star Game from 2009-11.
Beginning in the fall of 2015, fans
attending events at the Ragin’ Cajuns
Soccer/Track facility will quickly notice
new changes that were part of Tier 1
of the school’s $115 million Athletic
Facilities Master Plan.
	 The newly renovated facility will
feature office space, a team meeting
room, a new locker room and team
lounge, athletic training room and
air-conditioned press box. Fans will
benefit from the new facility with the
addition of a new team store, along
with a renovated concession stand and
restrooms.

LOUISIANA SOCCER 2015 2015 Season Preview
5 RAGINCAJUNS.COM
2015 LOUISIANA RAGIN’ CAJUNS SEASON PREVIEW
	 The Louisiana Ragin’Cajuns soccer
program is coming off one of its most
successful seasons under 11th-year head
coach Scot Wieland after matching the
second-most wins in program history (9)
and establishing new offensive records in
several categories in 2014.
	 Entering the 2015 campaign, Louisi-
ana returns a number of key contributors
at several positions on the pitch. The
offense, which set a new program mark
with 121 points scored and 47 goals a
season ago, is headlined by junior for-
ward Yazmin Montoya, who helped pace
the Cajuns’offense with seven goals,
tied for the team lead en route to being
named All-Louisiana Honorable Mention
by the Louisiana Sports Writers Associa-
tion.
The squad also welcomes back junior
midfielder Kimberly Grasso, a second
team All-Sun Belt Conference selec-
tion who scored five goals in 2014, and
seniors Caroline Trahan (midfielder) and
Elizabeth Manuel (forward).
	 Wieland carries much optimism with
the talent he has returning and the expe-
rience that the group brings.
“I’m hoping to continue that offen-
sive trend [from last season].”he said.“We
are returning a good, experienced group.
Leadership and chemistry should play a
big role in our offensive potential as well.”

Goalkeepers
	 Louisiana will have some strong
competition for the starting goalkeeper
job. Senior Lindsey Stocks, who started
nine matches last season, will be among
the candidates for the starting role.
Incoming freshmen Kristen Eddy and
Cosette Morche will be in the mix as well.
“We have two freshmen coming in,
and I think it will be extremely competi-
tive for the starting job,”Wieland said.
“Even though the freshmen are new, I
think they all have a good level of play-
ing experience. I’m excited to see the
competition between the three of them.”
Defenders
Wieland has a tall task of replacing
a first team-all conference selection in
Grace Howell-Harries. The team will have
plenty of new faces vying for starting
spots and Wieland is optimistic about the
skill set this group will bring to backline.
“Our backline will be a relatively new
group, but I think the girls we have do
have good experience and we will be
faster than in past years,”Wieland said.“It
will be interesting and exciting to see the
competition in those spots.”
Midfielders
	 The Cajuns’midfield positions looks
to be a strength with returning players
and other skilled players changing posi-
tions to raise the competition.

	 Louisiana will welcome back Grasso
and junior Natalie Newman, who has
started in 19 matches over the past two
seasons. Juniors MacKenzie Higgins and
Lindsay Brammer are making the transi-
tion from forward.
Senior Claire Ruehle and junior Mary
Walters are both going to see time at
midfield, while sophomore Jorgie Smith
started 13 matches during her freshman
season, scoring two goals.
Forwards
This group is headlined by the junior,
Yazmin Montoya, who continues to climb
some impressive offensive categories
in UL history. Manuel, who scored three
goals in a reserve role last season also
returns as well as junior Annika Schmidt
who finished tied for second on the team
with five goals in 2014.
“We have experience here too [with
Manuel, Schmidt and Montoya] In terms
of experience offensively so I am excited
to see that as well,”Wieland said.
Wieland is also looking forward to
seeing the continued growth of one of
his most potent offensive players in Mon-
toya.
“Montoya brings more to our team
this year because her role has changed in
a very positive way,”Wieland noted.“She
has taken on a leadership role this season
as a junior captain. She also spends a lot
of time in the weightroom and works on
getting better each day.”
Schedule
The opening portion of the Cajuns
schedule features challenging competi-
tion both in-state and from some of the
strongest conferences in the country.
Last season, the Cajuns finished 2-1
against non-conference opponents that
will be on tap for the 2015 campaign.
The season will open at home against
Sam Houston State on August 21.
“It will be competitive and I think it
will be a good test that will prepare us for
conference play,”Wieland said.“South-
eastern [Louisiana] will be a good pre-
season game for us to see where we are
[as a team]. Sam Houston and Nicholls
State are both good challenges, McNeese
State is an in-state rival. We have fared
well with Ole Miss the last few years. I
think this group is the strongest in terms
of experience and depth since I’ve been
here.”
As the Cajuns embark on a brand
new season with renewed expectations,
they have their goals right in front of
them. With the talent returning and the
new incoming freshman class coming in,
espectations remain high.
“As a group, our goal is to do bet-
ter than the season before,”Wieland
said.“Our goal is to finish higher in our
conference, to reach the final game of
the conference tournament, to win the
conference and to continue to progress
as a program. Ultimately, we want to be
the best team in the Sun Belt.”
Ragin’Cajuns junior forward Yazmin
Montoya enters 2015 ranked 2nd in
UL history in goals (20), 3rd in points
(47) and tied for 7th in assists (7).

LOUISIANA SOCCER 2015 The Scot Wieland Coaching Profile
RAGINCAJUNS.COM20
Scot Wieland is entering his 11th season
as the head coach of the Louisiana Ragin’
Cajuns soccer program, one that has seen
their success grow over recent years, not only
on the pitch, but in the classroom as well.
In his first 10 years, Wieland has led
the Cajuns to their first double-digit winning
season in school history, and helped 66
student-athletes receive degrees from the
University of Louisiana. His teams have posted
a cumulative GPA of over 3.0 in 19-of-20
semesters since Wieland came to Louisiana,
and 12 semesters with a team GPA higher than
3.25.
	 During the 2014 campaign, Wieland
guided the Ragin’ Cajuns to one of their most
successful season in program history, finishing
9-8-2 and 4-4-1 in conference action. The
nine wins were tied for second-most in Ragin’
Cajuns history, seven of them coming at the
Cajuns Soccer Complex, one shy of matching a
program record. UL’s offense established new
program records with 47 goals and 121 points,
while matching a single-game record with 10
goals against Alcorn State on September 21.
	 The Cajuns entered the postseason
as the No. 7 seed in the Sun Belt Conference
Tournament before falling in a tight 1-0 first
round battle against Troy in Mobile, Ala.
Louisiana had two players garner All-
Sun Belt Conference honors in defender Grace
Howell-Harries (first-team) and midfielder
Kimberly Grasso (second team). The duo also
earned NSCAA All-South Region Team, the
second for Howell-Harries and the first for
Grasso.
	 Howell-Harries (first team) Grasso
(first team) and Yazmin Montoya (honorable
mention) were showered with All-Louisiana
honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers
Association.
The 2013 season was a year to remember
for Louisiana with its best finish in program
history by posting an 8-7-3 record and a 5-2-1
mark in Sun Belt play. The Ragin’ Cajuns tied
for second in league play and entered the
conference championships as the No. 3 seed,
the highest in program history.
	 Louisiana saw a program-best three
Ragin’ Cajuns earn all-Sun Belt Conference
honors in 2013 with Yazmin Montoya (First
Team), Grace Howell-Harries (First Team,
Defensive Player of the Year) and Annika
Schmidt (Second Team) getting nods. The trio
also earned All-Louisiana accolades from the
Louisiana Sports Writers Association, while
Howell-Harries (second team) and Schmidt
(third team) added NSCAA All-South Region
awards.
	 Records fell forWieland’s Ragin’Cajuns in
2013 as the freshman duo of Yazmin Montoya
and Annika Schmidt quickly announced their
presence on the collegiate stage. Montoya set
single-season program records for goals (13),
points (31), shots (86) and shots on goal (38)
that propelled her into the top 10 for a career
in those categories. Schmidt’s season included
becoming the first player in Louisiana history
to record multiple hat tricks, and the fastest
to reach 20 points in a season, doing so in just
ten matches.
Wieland took over the reigns as head
coach in July 2005, replacing program-founder
Dave Poggi, and becoming the second head
coach in school history.
In his first season, Wieland ushered in a
new era with the opening of the Ragin’Cajuns
Soccer/Track Facility, marking the first on-
campus facility dedicated to soccer.
He earned his first win as head coach
of the Cajuns in just his third match. Wieland
led UL to a 1-0 home victory over in-state rival
Northwestern State on Sept. 2, 2005.
Under Wieland in 2005, Louisiana took
in-state foe LSU into overtime for the first time
in school history, allowing just one goal - the
least amount of goals scored by the Tigers
against the Cajuns in school history.

a 5-4-2 conference mark. Eight wins in a
season marked an all-time best for the
Cajuns, while five conference wins was the
most SBC victories in a season. The .500
record was the first time in Cajuns’ history
that the soccer team finished the year with
a non-losing record.
In 2007, Wieland directed the Ragin’
Cajuns soccer team to a 9-8-4 season,
capturing the most wins and first winning
season in program history.
During the 2006 and 2007 seasons
combined, Wieland led the Cajuns to 17
total wins, which included 10 wins in Sun
Belt Conference play. Seventeen wins over

For the 2008 season, the Cajuns
posted an overall record of 5-12-2 and had
two players earn All-Louisiana accolades
as Taunya Geelhoed and Callie Oliver
were named to the 2008 Louisiana Sports
Writers Association All-Louisiana Women’s
Soccer Collegiate Team.
	 Injuries and setbacks plagued the
squad in the 2009 season as the Cajuns
limped to a 2-16-1 record after losing four
starters early in the season.
He followed up the rough 2009
season with the best season in Louisiana’s
young history, going 10-11-0 in 2010, and
advancing to the Sun Belt Conference
Tournament for the first time since 2007.
The eight-win turnaround was the best in
school history, and led the conference.
	 The departures of several seniors
left Wieland with a young roster in 2011,
causing them to miss the postseason
yet again and finish with a 6-12-2 record.
Despite missing the postseason, the Cajuns
saw Grace Howell-Harries become the fifth
Cajun and first since 2007 to be named to
an All-Sun Belt team.
	 Wieland’s Cajuns finished 8-10-
2 in 2012, one spot out of the Sun Belt
Conference Tournament. In the classroom,
the squad boasted two 4.0 student-
athletes and five more with a 3.5 or higher
GPA, continuing a trend of exemplary
marks in the classroom.
	 The program was nationally
recognized by the NCAA APR Award,
given annually to teams earning multiyear
Academic Progress Rates in the top 10
percent of all teams per sport. The squad
posted a perfect 1,000 APR score during
the 2010-11 season, and compiled a multi-
year rate of 997, with all athletes remaining
eligible in the 2010-11 season.
Members of the soccer team have
also been active in the student-athlete
community, with three going on to be
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
president, Melissa Minton in 2012-13,
CarleighMartinfrom2009-11andBridgette
Adorno in the 2007-08 school year. Minton
was also the Sun Belt Conference SAAC
president and the Community Service
Liaison for the NCAA D-I SAAC.
Before Louisiana
Prior to arriving in Lafayette, Wieland
spent six years as the head coach at
Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C.,
compiling an 86-38-3 overall record from
1999-2004. His teams posted double-
digit wins in every season, including a
58-4-2 conference record and two NCAA
Tournament berths (1999 and 2001).
A powerhouse in NCAA Division II’s
Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference
(now Conference Carolinas), Wieland
led the Crusaders to three undefeated
conference schedules (1999, 2003 & 2004),
and left Belmont Abbey with a 26-game
CVAC winning streak.
He was named CVAC Coach of the
Year twice, in 1999 and 2003 after winning
both the regular season and tournament
conference crowns in both years.
	 Wieland coached two CVAC
Freshman of the Year recipients, four CVAC
Players of theYear and three All-Americans.
Prior to coaching at Belmont Abbey,
Wieland spent one season as the assistant
coach at Middle Tennessee (1998), when
they were members of the Ohio Valley
Conference.
His coaching career started in 1993,
when he took over the helm at Bishop
Verot High School in Fort Myers, Fla. In
five years, he led BVHS to a 64-15-5 record,
through 1997.
	 In addition to his collegiate
experience, Wieland headed the North
Carolina U-19 girl’s ODP program from
1999-2001 and the North Carolina U-16
girl’s ODP program from 2000-2003. In
2003, he led the North Carolina ODP U-15
team to the National Final Four.
Personal
	 Wieland played collegiately for
Bethany College (W.V.) from 1987-1991,
and served double duty, spending time as
the Bethany football team’s place kicker.

from Bethany College in 1991.

Nick Whiting begins his first season as
an assistant coach for the Louisiana Ragin’
Cajuns women’s soccer team after spending
the previous five years at Lees-McRae College,
including the last three as head coach.
During his three seasons as head coach,
the Bobcats claimed back-to-back Conference
Carolinas regular-season championships in
2012 and 2013, while serving as an assistant
on the Bobcats’ 2011 team that claimed the
conferencetitleandreachedtheNCAADivision
II Southeast Regional.
In his three year career at LMC, Whiting guided the Bobcats to a 29-
23-4 record and an impressive 23-7-1 record in league matches.
During the 2013 season, the Bobcats were ranked No. 10 nationally
among Division II programs in the NCAA and NSCAA/Continental Tire
NCAA Division II Southeast Region polls.
During the 2013 campaign, Whiting’s defense was one of the
toughest in the nation while producing a shutout streak that lasted
837:41 minutes. Junior Meagan Thornton was tabbed to the Conference
Carolinas All-Conference First Team, NCCSIA all-State team, Daktronics
All-Southeast Region team, NSCAA all-Southeast Region team and was a
NSCAAA Scholar under Whiting’s direction.
On the academic side, the Bobcats earned their sixth straight NSCAA
Team Academic Award in 2013.
	 In 2012, LMC put together a 12-5-2 overall, including a 10-1 mark
in league play. Eight players earned all-conference honors that season,
including senior Mary Dorn, who was named the Conference Carolinas
Defensive Player of the Year as well as the league’s Scholar Athlete of the
Year.
Four players earned all-region honors, as Dorn garnered academic
all-region recognition, as well as a spot on the NSCAA all-Southeast Region
First team. The Bobcats also continued their academic excellence as a
team, earning the program’s fifth straight NSCAA Team Academic Award,
while leading the conference with a team grade point average of 3.33.
Whiting served as the Bobcats’ assistant coach for two seasons,
helping Lees-McRae compile a 27-11-3 overall record over that span,
including a 13-5-3 mark in 2011. A native of Panama City, Fla., Whiting
played a pivotal role in the Bobcats’ success that season, helping Lees-
McRae post a program-record 11-1 mark in conference play en route to
the school’s first-ever outright league title and the program’s first-ever
berth in the NCAA Tournament.
He has mentored 20 all-conference players over the last three
seasons, including 2011 Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year
Meagan Thornton and 2012 Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the
Year Mary Dorn. He has also been an integral component in the Bobcats’
recruiting efforts since his arrival in 2010, welcoming 29 new student-
athletes into the women’s soccer program during his tenure.
Prior to his appointment as the Bobcats’ assistant, Whiting spent
the 2009 season at Catawba College, where he helped the Indians to a
13-5-2 record, a sixth-place ranking in the NSCAA Southeast Regional poll
and a trip to the South Atlantic Conference semifinals. Whiting’s primary
responsibility at Catawba was recruiting, a role in which he helped the
Indians sign seven players on National Signing Day. He also served as the
goalkeepers coach, guiding the Indian net minders to nine shutouts and a
0.86 goals against average.
Whiting also served as a graduate assistant coach at Western
Carolina University during their Southern Conference championship
season in 2008. During that campaign, Western Carolina advanced to the
NCAA Tournament where they met North Carolina in the opening round,
while registering a pivotal victory over No. 20-ranked South Carolina.
Prior to his time at WCU, Whiting spent a year at Jacksonville
University as a media relations assistant for both the men and women’s
soccer teams, as well as several other sports. Whiting is a 2007 graduate of
the University of West Florida, having earned his Bachelor of Arts degree
in communications with a specialization in public relations.

  • 5. LOUISIANA SOCCER 2015 2015 Season Preview 5 RAGINCAJUNS.COM 2015 LOUISIANA RAGIN’ CAJUNS SEASON PREVIEW The Louisiana Ragin’Cajuns soccer program is coming off one of its most successful seasons under 11th-year head coach Scot Wieland after matching the second-most wins in program history (9) and establishing new offensive records in several categories in 2014. Entering the 2015 campaign, Louisi- ana returns a number of key contributors at several positions on the pitch. The offense, which set a new program mark with 121 points scored and 47 goals a season ago, is headlined by junior for- ward Yazmin Montoya, who helped pace the Cajuns’offense with seven goals, tied for the team lead en route to being named All-Louisiana Honorable Mention by the Louisiana Sports Writers Associa- tion. The squad also welcomes back junior midfielder Kimberly Grasso, a second team All-Sun Belt Conference selec- tion who scored five goals in 2014, and seniors Caroline Trahan (midfielder) and Elizabeth Manuel (forward). Wieland carries much optimism with the talent he has returning and the expe- rience that the group brings. “I’m hoping to continue that offen- sive trend [from last season].”he said.“We are returning a good, experienced group. Leadership and chemistry should play a big role in our offensive potential as well.” Goalkeepers Louisiana will have some strong competition for the starting goalkeeper job. Senior Lindsey Stocks, who started nine matches last season, will be among the candidates for the starting role. Incoming freshmen Kristen Eddy and Cosette Morche will be in the mix as well. “We have two freshmen coming in, and I think it will be extremely competi- tive for the starting job,”Wieland said. “Even though the freshmen are new, I think they all have a good level of play- ing experience. I’m excited to see the competition between the three of them.” Defenders Wieland has a tall task of replacing a first team-all conference selection in Grace Howell-Harries. The team will have plenty of new faces vying for starting spots and Wieland is optimistic about the skill set this group will bring to backline. “Our backline will be a relatively new group, but I think the girls we have do have good experience and we will be faster than in past years,”Wieland said.“It will be interesting and exciting to see the competition in those spots.” Midfielders The Cajuns’midfield positions looks to be a strength with returning players and other skilled players changing posi- tions to raise the competition. Louisiana will welcome back Grasso and junior Natalie Newman, who has started in 19 matches over the past two seasons. Juniors MacKenzie Higgins and Lindsay Brammer are making the transi- tion from forward. Senior Claire Ruehle and junior Mary Walters are both going to see time at midfield, while sophomore Jorgie Smith started 13 matches during her freshman season, scoring two goals. Forwards This group is headlined by the junior, Yazmin Montoya, who continues to climb some impressive offensive categories in UL history. Manuel, who scored three goals in a reserve role last season also returns as well as junior Annika Schmidt who finished tied for second on the team with five goals in 2014. “We have experience here too [with Manuel, Schmidt and Montoya] In terms of experience offensively so I am excited to see that as well,”Wieland said. Wieland is also looking forward to seeing the continued growth of one of his most potent offensive players in Mon- toya. “Montoya brings more to our team this year because her role has changed in a very positive way,”Wieland noted.“She has taken on a leadership role this season as a junior captain. She also spends a lot of time in the weightroom and works on getting better each day.” Schedule The opening portion of the Cajuns schedule features challenging competi- tion both in-state and from some of the strongest conferences in the country. Last season, the Cajuns finished 2-1 against non-conference opponents that will be on tap for the 2015 campaign. The season will open at home against Sam Houston State on August 21. “It will be competitive and I think it will be a good test that will prepare us for conference play,”Wieland said.“South- eastern [Louisiana] will be a good pre- season game for us to see where we are [as a team]. Sam Houston and Nicholls State are both good challenges, McNeese State is an in-state rival. We have fared well with Ole Miss the last few years. I think this group is the strongest in terms of experience and depth since I’ve been here.” As the Cajuns embark on a brand new season with renewed expectations, they have their goals right in front of them. With the talent returning and the new incoming freshman class coming in, espectations remain high. “As a group, our goal is to do bet- ter than the season before,”Wieland said.“Our goal is to finish higher in our conference, to reach the final game of the conference tournament, to win the conference and to continue to progress as a program. Ultimately, we want to be the best team in the Sun Belt.” Ragin’Cajuns junior forward Yazmin Montoya enters 2015 ranked 2nd in UL history in goals (20), 3rd in points (47) and tied for 7th in assists (7).

  • 21. LOUISIANA SOCCER 2015 The Scot Wieland Coaching Profile RAGINCAJUNS.COM20 Scot Wieland is entering his 11th season as the head coach of the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns soccer program, one that has seen their success grow over recent years, not only on the pitch, but in the classroom as well. In his first 10 years, Wieland has led the Cajuns to their first double-digit winning season in school history, and helped 66 student-athletes receive degrees from the University of Louisiana. His teams have posted a cumulative GPA of over 3.0 in 19-of-20 semesters since Wieland came to Louisiana, and 12 semesters with a team GPA higher than 3.25. During the 2014 campaign, Wieland guided the Ragin’ Cajuns to one of their most successful season in program history, finishing 9-8-2 and 4-4-1 in conference action. The nine wins were tied for second-most in Ragin’ Cajuns history, seven of them coming at the Cajuns Soccer Complex, one shy of matching a program record. UL’s offense established new program records with 47 goals and 121 points, while matching a single-game record with 10 goals against Alcorn State on September 21. The Cajuns entered the postseason as the No. 7 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament before falling in a tight 1-0 first round battle against Troy in Mobile, Ala. Louisiana had two players garner All- Sun Belt Conference honors in defender Grace Howell-Harries (first-team) and midfielder Kimberly Grasso (second team). The duo also earned NSCAA All-South Region Team, the second for Howell-Harries and the first for Grasso. Howell-Harries (first team) Grasso (first team) and Yazmin Montoya (honorable mention) were showered with All-Louisiana honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. The 2013 season was a year to remember for Louisiana with its best finish in program history by posting an 8-7-3 record and a 5-2-1 mark in Sun Belt play. The Ragin’ Cajuns tied for second in league play and entered the conference championships as the No. 3 seed, the highest in program history. Louisiana saw a program-best three Ragin’ Cajuns earn all-Sun Belt Conference honors in 2013 with Yazmin Montoya (First Team), Grace Howell-Harries (First Team, Defensive Player of the Year) and Annika Schmidt (Second Team) getting nods. The trio also earned All-Louisiana accolades from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, while Howell-Harries (second team) and Schmidt (third team) added NSCAA All-South Region awards. Records fell forWieland’s Ragin’Cajuns in 2013 as the freshman duo of Yazmin Montoya and Annika Schmidt quickly announced their presence on the collegiate stage. Montoya set single-season program records for goals (13), points (31), shots (86) and shots on goal (38) that propelled her into the top 10 for a career in those categories. Schmidt’s season included becoming the first player in Louisiana history to record multiple hat tricks, and the fastest to reach 20 points in a season, doing so in just ten matches. Wieland took over the reigns as head coach in July 2005, replacing program-founder Dave Poggi, and becoming the second head coach in school history. In his first season, Wieland ushered in a new era with the opening of the Ragin’Cajuns Soccer/Track Facility, marking the first on- campus facility dedicated to soccer. He earned his first win as head coach of the Cajuns in just his third match. Wieland led UL to a 1-0 home victory over in-state rival Northwestern State on Sept. 2, 2005. Under Wieland in 2005, Louisiana took in-state foe LSU into overtime for the first time in school history, allowing just one goal - the least amount of goals scored by the Tigers against the Cajuns in school history. Eight wins in a season marked an all-time best for the Cajuns, while five conference wins was the most SBC victories in a season. The .500 record was the first time in Cajuns’ history that the soccer team finished the year with a non-losing record. In 2007, Wieland directed the Ragin’ Cajuns soccer team to a 9-8-4 season, capturing the most wins and first winning season in program history. During the 2006 and 2007 seasons combined, Wieland led the Cajuns to 17 total wins, which included 10 wins in Sun Belt Conference play. Seventeen wins over thetwoyearsremainsthemostvictoriesfor the Cajuns in a two-year span in program history. For the 2008 season, the Cajuns posted an overall record of 5-12-2 and had two players earn All-Louisiana accolades as Taunya Geelhoed and Callie Oliver were named to the 2008 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Women’s Soccer Collegiate Team. Injuries and setbacks plagued the squad in the 2009 season as the Cajuns limped to a 2-16-1 record after losing four starters early in the season. He followed up the rough 2009 season with the best season in Louisiana’s young history, going 10-11-0 in 2010, and advancing to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the first time since 2007. The eight-win turnaround was the best in school history, and led the conference. The departures of several seniors left Wieland with a young roster in 2011, causing them to miss the postseason yet again and finish with a 6-12-2 record. Despite missing the postseason, the Cajuns saw Grace Howell-Harries become the fifth Cajun and first since 2007 to be named to an All-Sun Belt team. Wieland’s Cajuns finished 8-10- 2 in 2012, one spot out of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. In the classroom, the squad boasted two 4.0 student- athletes and five more with a 3.5 or higher GPA, continuing a trend of exemplary marks in the classroom. The program was nationally recognized by the NCAA APR Award, given annually to teams earning multiyear Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of all teams per sport. The squad posted a perfect 1,000 APR score during the 2010-11 season, and compiled a multi- year rate of 997, with all athletes remaining eligible in the 2010-11 season. Members of the soccer team have also been active in the student-athlete community, with three going on to be Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president, Melissa Minton in 2012-13, CarleighMartinfrom2009-11andBridgette Adorno in the 2007-08 school year. Minton was also the Sun Belt Conference SAAC president and the Community Service Liaison for the NCAA D-I SAAC. Before Louisiana Prior to arriving in Lafayette, Wieland spent six years as the head coach at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C., compiling an 86-38-3 overall record from 1999-2004. His teams posted double- digit wins in every season, including a 58-4-2 conference record and two NCAA Tournament berths (1999 and 2001). A powerhouse in NCAA Division II’s Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (now Conference Carolinas), Wieland led the Crusaders to three undefeated conference schedules (1999, 2003 & 2004), and left Belmont Abbey with a 26-game CVAC winning streak. He was named CVAC Coach of the Year twice, in 1999 and 2003 after winning both the regular season and tournament conference crowns in both years. Wieland coached two CVAC Freshman of the Year recipients, four CVAC Players of theYear and three All-Americans. Prior to coaching at Belmont Abbey, Wieland spent one season as the assistant coach at Middle Tennessee (1998), when they were members of the Ohio Valley Conference. His coaching career started in 1993, when he took over the helm at Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers, Fla. In five years, he led BVHS to a 64-15-5 record, through 1997. In addition to his collegiate experience, Wieland headed the North Carolina U-19 girl’s ODP program from 1999-2001 and the North Carolina U-16 girl’s ODP program from 2000-2003. In 2003, he led the North Carolina ODP U-15 team to the National Final Four. Personal Wieland played collegiately for Bethany College (W.V.) from 1987-1991, and served double duty, spending time as the Bethany football team’s place kicker.
