The Urban Public Policy Fellowship (UPPF) program is a leadership development program that exposes historically underrepresented minority undergraduate students at UIC to public policy issues. UPPF fellows attend weekly seminars on policy topics and complete internships at organizations working in public policy, advocacy, and community development. In 2014-2015, 27 students were selected as UPPF fellows and presented their work at a research conference. The program aims to introduce fellows to the theory and practice of public policy-making.

How do we build power for the policies needed to achieve health equity, and to dismantle structural racism and other root causes of health inequities? Who are allies in this struggle for social justice? Who is the opposition and what do they gain from the status quo? Using #OneFairWage and Protect Immigrant Health Now! as examples, answers to these questions will be proposed by a leader of the Collaborative for Health Equity Cook County (www.CHECookCounty.org), part of the National Collaborative for Health Equity. A group dialogue will follow.

With increased funding, organizations are better able to develop and enhance young breast cancer survivor-focused initiatives.

Led by Timothy Kordic, the unit develops policy, provides professional development and curriculum resources to schools. The unit receives CDC funding to conduct youth surveys, implement evidence-based interventions for at-risk groups, and support school efforts like Gay-Straight Alliances to positively impact student health outcomes.

The KidsWalk Coalition in New Orleans worked from 2010 to 2014 to promote walking and bicycling through partnerships between non-profits, the city government, and community organizations. The coalition grew to over 25 partners, published reports on neighborhood walkability, and assisted the city in adopting bikeability and accessibility policies and plans. However, more work is still needed to engage the public, ensure consistent leadership, collect data, and implement improvements to make streets safer for all users.ย

- 2. The Urban Public Policy Fellowship (UPPF) program, is a leadership development program designed to expose historically underrepresented minority undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) to key public policy issues.
- 3. UPPF Fellows were selected through a highly competitive process that considered grade point average, history of engagement, and leadership experience.
- 4. UPPF Fellows attended weekly seminars throughout the spring semester. Seminars included policy issues, project management, research, government issues and education budget information.
- 5. UPPF Fellows presented Public Policy Posters at the IALHEA Research Conference, April 15, 2015.
- 6. UPPF Fellows were also assigned an internship placement designed to expose him or her to the theory and practice of public policy-making, advocacy, community development, and service provision.
