Software Development - Building a House - by Junior Mayta - Software Engineer...Christian Paulus
Building software is like building a house in that both require careful planning, expertise across different roles, and a shared vision between stakeholders. Software is often difficult to understand because it is abstract, while a house is tangible. While a basic house can be built quickly, complex houses with multiple floors or earthquake-proofing require more time, money and skills. Similarly, simple web pages can be built quickly but highly scalable software systems require extensive research, expertise and resources. Both software projects and house building are prone to issues if not planned properly from the beginning with the right team roles and qualifications in place.
This document summarizes and compares several prototyping tools, including Adobe Edge Reflow, UX Pin, Flinto, InVision App, Proto.io, Webflow, Macaw, Adobe Muse, Fluid UI, Apple Keynote. For each tool, it lists key highlights and limitations. At the end, it provides recommendations for click-through prototypes (InVision App), responsive design (Webflow), and mobile apps (Proto.io).
Low Code Capabilities of Digital Product Design PlatformsJohnMcGuigan10
This document discusses low-code capabilities of digital product design platforms. It notes that today's software development faces challenges like siloed tools and lack of UX resources for developers. Low-code and no-code tools promise to help by bridging designer-developer divides. These platforms help speed time to market and improve quality by streamlining hand-offs. The document compares vendors and demonstrates a platform's features before recommending platforms to accelerate app development.

Forge - DevCon 2016: Implementing Rich Applications in the BrowserAutodesk
Sebastian Dunkel, Autodesk
Cloud based web applications running in the browser have fundamental advantages over their desktop based siblings: They run on any device and are not tied to a certain operating system. The transition to web applications can solve many of the deployment problems and facilitates effortless real-time collaboration in a connected world.
However, implementing rich browser applications is challenging. Besides general technical limitations, leveraging existing technology is far from trivial. In this presentation we will discuss these and other challenges based on selected browser-based applications developed at Autodesk. Moreover, we will show how Forge technology can help to accelerate application development and improve the development experience.

Prepare the sled in summer and project release at its beginningVadym Fedorov
The document discusses improving collaboration between development and operations teams when delivering new software products. It identifies that a lack of communication and knowledge transfer between dev and ops teams can cause delays. Best practices include having one manager oversee the entire delivery process, sharing common success metrics, and close collaboration between teams. The document also advocates designing infrastructure as code to keep environments consistent and enable automation.
Responsive Design for SavvyMoney Credit ScoreWendy Fischer
The document summarizes the process for implementing a responsive design for the SavvyMoney Credit Score product. It discusses constraints including a small team, outsourced development, and a focus on quick execution over extensive planning. It proposes a strategy of rolling out responsive design features sprint by sprint using breakpoints at 960px, 768px, and 480px. Challenges include the "Frankensite" effect of a partially responsive site and the designer's lack of coding skills and experience with responsive design. Potential responsive design tools are assessed, with Adobe Photoshop and Reflow proposed as a viable option due to integration with existing workflows and assets.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)Julian Hyde
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.

Microservice Teams - How the cloud changes the way we workSven Peters
A lot of technical challenges and complexity come with building a cloud-native and distributed architecture. The way we develop backend software has fundamentally changed in the last ten years. Managing a microservices architecture demands a lot of us to ensure observability and operational resiliency. But did you also change the way you run your development teams?
Sven will talk about Atlassian’s journey from a monolith to a multi-tenanted architecture and how it affected the way the engineering teams work. You will learn how we shifted to service ownership, moved to more autonomous teams (and its challenges), and established platform and enablement teams.
