Editor's Notes
I ’m going to talk very briefly about how our partnership with sharc has improved access to treatment for families at Regen then Heather will tell you more about the ARC program and the work sharc does to support families affected by AOD use of a family member.
Family work has been evolving at ReGen since back in 2001 when our then CEO Janet Farrow undertook a Churchhill Fellowship overseas to assess treatment and support programs for individuals and their families where substance abuse, family violence or mental health disorders are present. In 2008 we joined the Bouverie Lighting Beacons Project, committed to working with families in our strategic plan and provided the facilities for sharc to run its ’ ARC program at our site in Jessie St.
Other things and people have helped progress our thinking and action in relation to family work including Collaboration with US psychiatrists Ken Minkoff & Christine Kline who championed the important of welcoming and our rebranding in 2012 which provided an opportunity to hear what our clients wanted from us and for us to think about how we wanted to portray ourselves.
Through our partnership with sharc we are now able to offer families a range of interventions depending on their need and readiness. A positive spin off to our staff being involved in the ARC sessions has been hearing directly from the families who participate in ARC about their struggles and distress. It has helped us to understand how important it is that families, as well as supporting the person with the AOD issue, have significant needs in their own right and deserve treatment and support.
