8. The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project
Each year since 1984, former President Carter
and his wife, Rosalynn, give a week of their time
to help Habitat build homes.
The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project
helps to raise awareness for the critical need for
simple, decent and affordable housing.
The event is held at a different location each
year and attracts volunteers from around the
world.

In 2011, volunteers at the
28th annual Jimmy &
Rosalynn Carter Work Project
— along with corporate
partners, project donors as
well as volunteers from the
Irish nonprofit Haven —
partnered with families to
build 155 permanent houses
in the Santo community in
Léogâne.

Léogâne is 18 miles from Port-au-
Prince and considered to be the
epicenter of the 2010
earthquake.
The project is part of a larger
Habitat shelter program funded
by the Multilateral Investment
Fund of the Inter-American
Development Bank and many
other donors.

Many families have started
small businesses in or outside
their new homes to increase
much needed family income.
Others continue to make
upgrades to their new homes
and landscape their yards.
The pride of homeownership is
omnipresent.

But, so much work remains.
This year, the Carter Work Project
returns to strengthen and support
Habitat’s ongoing work and keep
Haiti in our hearts and minds.
President and Mrs. Carter will join
approximately 600 volunteers Nov. 23
– Dec. 1, 2012, to build the next 100
Habitat homes in the Santo
community.
