Ethnography and a wider perspective on library user experienceAndy Priestner
The document discusses how focusing too narrowly on library use and statistics provides an incomplete picture of the student experience. It advocates using ethnographic research methods like interviews and observation to understand students' entire learning landscape and where the library does or does not fit in. As an example, it describes a project called Spacefinder that was developed through ethnographic research to match students with study spaces based on their diverse preferences, leading to a useful tool beyond just the library. It concludes that understanding the wider student experience, not just library metrics, is necessary to develop services that truly meet student needs.
The document promotes the value and importance of libraries in today's digital world. It notes that more information is being created than ever before, so libraries are needed to help people navigate information overload. Libraries can help people access and use information from the internet as well as provide educational and job resources. The key message is that now, more than ever, libraries and librarians are vital to help people effectively use and understand information.
The document discusses how Ranganathan's five laws of library science remain relevant in the digital age. While books have evolved into digital formats and libraries now offer more services beyond their physical spaces, the principles of making resources accessible to users, connecting users with useful information, and adapting to meet users' needs are as important today. The document provides examples of how libraries now use technologies like social media, mobile services, and improved online catalogs to fulfill Ranganathan's laws in new ways.
This presentation discusses:
- Online Learning communities
- A particular learning community that we built
- How that learning community was used
A lot of the principles, problems and lessons apply to any learning community, whether you create it in your VLE, on facebook, on Ning or just on a blog or a wiki. Whatever technology you use, there are principles here that you should be able to apply.
Probably, most importantly, this is about building a learning community that works. Because, in many cases, they don't.

This document discusses the evolution of information literacy beyond the concept of Library 2.0. It argues that Library 2.0 was an overhyped idea that confused trends in web tools with the core concept. While social media tools saw early adoption among students, academics and researchers were slower to engage. The document notes that information literacy is now focused on skills like evaluating large amounts of information from search results and mobile access is increasingly important. It suggests information literacy must adapt to these changes by guiding students on skills like reflection and contemplation to process online information and that libraries are well positioned to help with this evolution.
The saveMLAK project began in 2011 after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami that killed over 18,000 people. The project aimed to rebuild museum, library, archive, and community center (MLAK) facilities damaged in the disaster area. They did this by [1] gathering information on damaged MLAK facilities using a wiki and [2] coordinating rebuilding activities like temporary library buildings and donating books to replace lost collections. Recovery and reconstruction efforts are still ongoing over 2 years later as facilities have not been fully rebuilt.

Michael Sauers, a technology innovation librarian, presented ideas on how libraries can better serve users and embrace new technologies. He suggests that libraries should go where users are, such as using text messaging and social media, instead of expecting users to use outdated communication methods. He also advocates that libraries should break down barriers to access, join online conversations, and focus on interacting with people rather than just machines. The presentation provides examples of innovative libraries and concludes by encouraging libraries to build on new ideas to better communicate and interact with users.
