2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Week 1: Welcome to the first part of Level 3
Nível 3 - Parte 1
Unit 1 is called The First Week. Do you remember your first week at university?
Generally, what happens in this first week? We meet new people, meet the
professors, discover where our classes are. Ah, we also make new friends!
Let’s divide the week in five days and study one lesson per day.
Remember, every time you finish a unit you should also review what was studied
before. This is the way you consolidate knowledge.
5. Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8
Nível 3 - Parte 1
On the first day, do the six activities in Lesson 1 – Vocabulary. In this lesson you will
learn vocabulary to interview a classmate. Discover your colleagues’ interests and
listen to an interview.
On day 2, Lesson 2 presents five activities teaching how to use the simple present to
exchange personal information. Imagine if you have the opportunity to take a course
abroad. How would you make new friends? Yes, you would have to start by asking
some personal information in order to discover people’s interests.
The five activities for Lesson 3 come on day 3. You already know how to use there is /
there are. Let’s use this knowledge as well as the prepositions of location to describe
school facilities. Then, there are more five activities on day 4, Lesson 4, teaching us
how to discuss schools
On the last day, let’s take the opportunity to study the listening activities in Lesson 6.
You’ll listen to information about schools in other countries. You will also listen to
learn more about school facilities.
Oops, the first week passed so fast!

Week 2: starting...
Nível 3 - Parte 1
Our plan for this week is to finish Unit 1 and start Unit 2. Every time we finish a unit
we also read a book. To make things clear, let’s say that whenever you have to read a
book, divide the reading in three parts. The first part takes one day and this is the day
that you use to prepare the vocabulary. The other three days of the week are used to
read the pages of the book. So, divide them accordingly and you won’t have too much
to read on a day. Everything depends on organization! Then, the last day of the week
is to watch the video, do the quiz and read the complementary text.
This week we are going to read the book Orangutan Language. Orangutans are
animals that are similar to people in may ways. One similarity is their ability to
communicate through language. This ability is being studied at a program in a zoo in
Washington, D.C. What is the purpose of this program? How does it work?
For each day we’ll have one lesson to study. On the first day, study the six activities in
Lesson 5. Learn how to describe a class using quantifiers, understand charts and
discuss transportation options.
7. Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8
Nível 3 - Parte 1
On the second day, study Lesson 7 where you will read about learning English.
On the third day of this week, study not only the four activities of Lesson 8 where
you’ll watch and listen to a video about Alex the parrot, but also take some time to
review what was studied in Unit 1. After this, do the unit end pages.
Use the fourth day to start unit 2. The title of this unit is The Average American. In
Lesson 1, you’ll learn vocabulary to describe typical behavior.
In Lesson 2 we’ll have seven activities to learn how to talk about routines using the
simple present tense both in affirmative and negative statements.
Well, take a time to rest after finishing Lesson 2 and see you next week.

Nível 3 - Parte 1
Sometimes, before going further, it’s useful to look back and see how much has
already been achieved. Let’s do it now. Look at what was studied in Unit 1:
• Talk about interests.
• Exchange personal information.
• Describe school facilities.
• Discuss schools.
• Describe a class using quantifiers.
• Discover information about schools in other countries.
• Discover information about learning English.
Now that you can have a picture of what you have achieved so far, let’s keep going.
The more we study, the better.

First of all, start preparing the vocabulary for the book Bird Girl. The book talks about
a young girl in Florida who watches birds as a hobby. She loves birds so much that she
is even writing a children’s book about the birds. Do you like birds? What animals do
you love?
On this same day study the seven activities in Lesson 3, Unit 2 where you’ll learn how
to describe behavior of an average person. You’ll also use the simple present tense
and interpret graphs.
On the second day start reading the pages of the book Bird Girl and divide the pages
of the book in three days of study. Besides this, study Lesson 4 and learn how to use
adverbs of frequency and time expressions to talk about routines.
Day three is to focus on the six activities of Lesson 5 and take one more opportunity to
use the adverbs of frequency when talking about routines.
10. Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8
Nível 3 - Parte 1
The Listening lesson, that is, Lesson 6, is to be studied on the fourth day. There are
four activities and you’ll listen to a description of a family. Lesson 7 – Reading and
Writing – will also be studied on this same day. Read about the average community
college student.
Well, the last day of this week is dedicated to Lesson 8 where you will listen to and
watch a video about Queens, in N.Y.
Also, on this last day watch the video and take the quiz for the book Bird Girl. Why
does the girl love birds so much? How did she write a book at such a young age? There
is also a text called The Big Bird Count with 348 words.
Before saying goodbye to this week, review the subject and study the unit end pages
and then you deserve to rest.

This is the beginning of a new week and the beginning of a new unit. Unit 3 is called
Spending and Saving. How do you deal with your money? Can you control it well? Do
you spend more or save more? It’s important to save for a rainy day!
Let’s have one lesson per day as it follows.
On the first day of this week let’s study Lesson 1 with five vocabulary activities that
will teach you vocabulary to talk about banks and money.
Day 2 is to learn how to talk about income an expenses and talk about how people
spend their money. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on your money habits.
12. Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7 Week 8
Nível 3 - Parte 1
Day 3 presents six activities in Lesson 3 where you will learn how to ask and answer
and talk about someone’s day using the simple present tense.
Day 4 has eight activities related to money habits in Lesson 4.
Finally, let’s finish the week listening to a conversation about spending habits and
budgeting. This knowledge is in Lesson 6 that presents four activities.
Next week we are going to finish unit 3 and start unit 4! Yes, I’m sure you agree that
time runs!

Ready to go?
During this week we will read the book The Black Diamonds of Provence. Did you
know that in France people make money by selling a special food called truffle?
Truffles can be found in the woods, however they are rare and expensive. How much
would you pay for them?
You already know how to divide the book, don’t you? Well, just in case – one day to
prepare the vocabulary, 3 days to read the pages and one final day to watch the video,
answer the quiz and read the complementary text. This time, this extra reading is
about truffle farming.
So, now let’s divide our duties per day.

Nível 3 - Parte 1
On the first day, study both Lessons 5 and 7. Lesson 5 has six activities on grammar
where you will talk about jobs and money. Lesson 7 has four activities on reading and
writing where you will read tips for saving money and guess the meaning of new
words from the context. This knowledge is really useful, once you might not know all
the words every time you read a text. So, this is the skill that will give you
independence to read any kind of text.
Lesson 8 will be studied on the second day. In this lesson you have the video activities
where you will watch and listen to a video about shopping in Fez, Morocco. Do you
have any idea of how the market in Fes is? I think it’s a little bit different from
everything you have ever seen.
Take the third day to review all the subject studied so far and do the unit end pages.

Although we are not finishing unit 4 this week, I can guarantee we are going well!
We have less than a lesson per day. So you can choose if you want to take one day in
the beginning of the week to review the content and than take one lesson per day or if
you prefer to start on the first day with a lesson each day and then take the last day of
the week to review the content. It’s up to you.
Lesson 3 has six activities teaching you how to describe the geography of a country
from a map. Are you good at maps? If I give you a map, can you find yourself in a new
place?
Lesson 4 has seven activities in which you will ask about geographical features, use
quantifiers and count and non-count nouns.

cities and countries. You’ll learn how to ask and answer questions using how much /
how many. You’ll also describe the geography of Scotland and discuss world problems
using too much / too many / not enough.
In Lesson 6, the activities will give you the opportunity to listen to information about
Florida.
This is the end of one more week!

I’d recommend we divide this week in two parts. Take the two first days to finish Unit
4. The other three days will be used to study the four first lessons in Unit 5.
Besides this, read the book The Missing Snows of Kilimanjaro. Mount Kilimanjaro is
the highest mountain in Africa. It’s in a hot, tropical area, but it’s so high it’s always
covered in ice and snow. But there is something affecting the mountain. What is it? Do
you know?
So, next you will see what each lesson has for us.

The reading and writing in Lesson 7 shows Death Valley National Park. You will learn
how to understand cause and effect in a text.
The video in Lesson 8 shows life under the sea. Do you enjoy diving? Have you ever
tried?
Unit 4 was useful to let us think about our planet. It has been suffering for the last
decades. The new generations and the government of many important countries in
the world have been put much thought on this issue. How concerned are you about
it?
And now it’s time to start our last unit. Unit 5 is called Technology. Are you addicted to
technology? How can it help us in different ways?
So, on day 2 study Lesson 1 that contains five activities teaching you vocabulary to talk
about electronic equipment.

Lesson 2 is for day 3. There are eight activities to help you identify people breaking the
rules. You will also use the present continuous to talk about ongoing activities.
In Lesson 3, we’ll learn how to talk about someone’s online activities. Also, what’s the
difference between something happening now and something that regularly happens?
How can you use the verb tenses correctly to express this?
On our last day we have Lesson 6. You’ll listen to information about a travel site online.
You’ll also listen to and answer questions about a typical day in a travel company.
Would you like to work at a travel company? Is your major related to this?
The last week is coming next!

a video about space walk. Does this topic interest you. Do you know that some people
still do not believe that men stepped on the moon? What’s your opinion?
On the last day, before doing the unit end pages, separate a few minutes to review the
subject.
In Unit 5 we learned how to talk about technology. This is something that is related to
our lives all the time, isn’t it? How do you deal with technology? Are you a slave or do
you use it in your favor?
