2. Effective leadership and management requires knowledge, skill
and competency in carrying out management functions and
applying leadership principles.
Nurses and other health workers must be prepared in leadership
and management skills to be successful in their work place
The management process uses both interpersonal and technical
skills to achieve organizational objectives by utilizing human and
material resources and technology.
This discussion therefore focuses on the concepts of leadership
and management.

3. •At the end of this presentation, students should be able
to acquire and apply knowledge regarding the nature
and concepts of leadership and management.

5. Definition of terms in leadership and management
Leadership; This is a process by which a person influences
others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in
a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent.
Management; This is a process of influencing others, but with
the specific intention of getting them to perform effectively and
contribute to meeting the organizational goals (Drucker, 1967)

6. Nursing management process;
•This is the process of working through nursing staff
members to provide care, cure and comfort to patients?
Leadership;
•Leadership is the process of influencing others
(Tannenbaum, Weschler & Massarik, 1974).

7. Organization;
•This refers to responsibilities by means of which the
activities of the enterprise are dispersed among the
(managerial, supervisory and specialist) personnel
employed in its service.

8. Observation; Observation refers to objective examination of
present practices, analysing, breaking them down to study them.
Classification; means comparing them with basic principles and
the resultant hypothesis will be an improved new method or
practice.
This is an important area especially in relation to motivation and
coordination. It can also be applied to the manager himself, in
developing a scientific attitude of mind towards his problems and
the making of his decisions

9. Definitions relating to leadership styles
Coercive; This is a situation where leaders demand
immediate compliance.
Authoritative; This is a state when leaders mobilize
people toward a vision
Affiliative; This is where leaders create emotional
bonds and harmony

10. Democratic leadership; This is where leaders build
consensus through participation.
Pacesetting; This is where leaders expect excellence
and self direction.
Coaching ; Leaders develop people for the future.
Bureaucratic leadership; This is a type of leadership
whose leaders focus on following every rule.

11. Charismatic Leadership; This is one in which leaders
inspire enthusiasm in their teams and are energetic in
motivating others to move forward.
Servant leadership; This is a type of leadership where
leaders focus on meeting the needs of the team.
Transactional leadership; this is one in which leaders
inspire by expecting the best from everyone and

and its elements.
• Management is a process of influencing others, but with the

15. •Organization: This is a social unit of people that is
designed and managed to meet a need or achieve
collective goals. The purpose of organization is to create
an arrangement of positions and responsibilities through
and by means of which an enterprise can carry out its

16. •Planning: Is a systematic approach to attaining explicit
objectives for the future through efficient and
appropriate use of resources available now and in the
future.
•Directing: means giving instructions, guiding and
counseling, motivating and leading the staff in an
organization in doing work to achieve Organizational
goals.

17. •Staffing: This is a process of acquiring, developing,
employing, appraising, remunerating and retaining
people so that the right type of people are available in
right positions and at the right time in the organization.
•Controlling: This is a process of determining what is
being accomplished - that is, evaluating performance
and, if necessary, applying corrective measures so that
performance takes place according to plans.

18. Effective leadership and management in complex health
care systems requires knowledge and skills concerning
how best to work with other people. This also involves
networking with the multidisciplinary team in aiming at
achieving common goals, thereby creating an optimal
working environment.
