The Red Scare
The Sacco and Vanzetti Trial
For whichever topic you choose, you must include all of the following in your
news article:

Please write this article in a news article style. Points will be taken off for

2. Visual Advertisement Choices
Jazz Age Movie Poster: One option is to create a “Jazz Age” inspired movie poster,
and a descriptive paragraph. Include each of the following for a good grade!
1. A title for your imaginary film. The film must be about events that happen in the
1920s! (Prohibition, Jazz, Flappers, Anti-Immigration, Harlem Renaissance…)
2. A drawing/picture of some kind that shows what the film is about—again, it must
be something from the 1920s!
3. A slogan or catchphrase for the film that would make viewers want to watch it.
Think about movie previews and posters today.
4. Include somewhere that the film TALKS! Sound pictures were first shown in 1927.
5. A Descriptive paragraph about your poster design, explaining how your movie plot
and poster relate to the Roaring Twenties.
PLEASE make this colorful and catchy looking—think about what kinds of movie posters
catch your eye as you walk down the street. (Hint—use page 714-715)
1920s Ladies Fashion Advertisement: The second option is to create a fashion
advertisement, with a descriptive paragraph, featuring clothing and women appropriate
for the 1920s. Include the following:
1. Make up a clothing line or company for your advertisement.
2. Create and show a fashion look that would be appropriate for the new woman of
the 1920s.
3. Create a slogan for your new clothing that would be appropriate to the changing
views of women in the 1920s.
4. Include a descriptive paragraph detailing how your advertisement shows how
women were viewed in the 1920s, and why your clothes are appropriate.
Please make this colorful and eye-catching! As well, remember that this is an
advertisement—you want to be able to sell your product. (Hint—use page 714)
Ford Motor Company Advertisement: The third option is to create an
advertisement for the Ford Motor Company, with a descriptive paragraph about your
advertisement. Use pages 709-712 to help you. Include each of the following items:
1. A catchy slogan for your advertisement, advertising either Henry Ford’s Model T,
or Model A automobiles.
2. Create an image appropriate for automobile advertisements in the 1920s.
3. In your advertisement, descriptive paragraph, or both, make sure you include
each of the following terms somewhere, and that it is clear you understand what
they mean: Installment Buying
Scientific Management
Assembly Line
3. Creative Writing Choices
Marcus Garvey Political Speech: Write a political speech about topics that Marcus
Garvey, leader of African Americans during a time of racial unrest, would speak about.
Use page 703 to help you. This speech should be at least one page long. Include
information about each of the following terms in order to receive full credit:
Riots
United Negro Improvement Association
“Back-to-Africa” Movement
Causes of racial unrest (Great Migration, KKK activity, Nativism)
Prohibition Short Story: Write a short (at least one page) story about life during
Prohibition. Tell a story detailing the events that someone might come across when
trying to go to a speakeasy, smuggle alcohol, or even distill their own bootleg liquor. Use
pages 716-717 to help. You must include at least 5 of the following terms in your story:
Eighteenth Amendment
Volstead Act
Bootlegging
Speakeasies
Bathtub Gin
Prohibition
Al “Scarface” Capone
Organized Crime
Harlem Renaissance Poem: Write a poem of at least 12 lines inspired by the art,
poetry, and literature of the Harlem Renaissance. Then write a descriptive paragraph
explaining your poem and why it represents the way African American artists and writers
of the Harlem Renaissance would use art to express their culture. Use page 715 to help
you, as well as the Graphic Novel “Still I Rise” for more detail.
