16MnCr5 is a case hardening steel grade that is commonly used for gears, shafts, and other mechanical components. It has good hardenability and forgeability, allowing it to be carburized or carbonitrided to achieve a hard surface with a tough core. The steel has excellent weldability but care must be taken to prevent cracking. Machinability is approximately 80% of mild steel. Typical applications include gears, pins, camshafts and clutch plates.
