The garments of the high priest, as described in Exodus 28:2-43, were elaborate and made of costly materials to signify the holiness of God and purity required of the high priest. The high priest wore a breastplate, ephod, robe, woven tunic, linen turban, and sash. Precious stones were set in the breastplate representing the 12 tribes of Israel. A golden plate with the words "Holiness to the Lord" was worn on the turban. These special garments reinforced that everything about the high priest's role and appearance was to inspire reverence for God.
