Priority Population: African American
men who have sex with men (MSM) in
Los Angeles
Health Challenge: Address stigmas,
negative beliefs, increase screening,
and decrease transmission rates.
Impact: African Americans MSM
account for 80% of new cases and have
77% of the population living with HIV/
AIDS (LA Department of Public Health,
2011)
Goal: To decrease transmission
rates of HIV/AIDS among MSM
Main Objectives: Participants will
be able to:
1.  Approach stigmas and
discrimination with ease with
the help of their buddy
2.  Demonstrate an increase of
knowledge about HIV/AIDS
prevention
3.  Identify where and which
clinics they can get tested at
and the resources that are
provided for people with
HIV/AIDS
	
  
Theory: Health Belief Model & the
Social Cognitive Theory
Methods: Increasing knowledge and
changing attitudes
Strategies:	
  The	
  “buddy	
  system”	
  
Activities: Two learning workshops a
week followed by an activity with a
buddy either inside or outside of the
classroom depending on the lesson
plan
Evaluation: Post, concluding surveys
and phone interviews of participants,
staff/buddies, and immediate family
members
Barriers: Competition of other
programs offered at the Health and
Wellness Community Center
Facilitators: Immediate family of
participants
Ethical Considerations: Privacy and
security issues when exposing HIV/AIDS
status
