1. Discuss the community policing philosophy.
Community policing is a philosophy that promotes
organizational strategies that support the systematic use of
partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively
address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety
issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime.
Community policing evolved as a philosophy for the delivery of
police services in the early 1990s. It involves the police as one
resource of many in dealing with community and neighborhood
problems. Community policing is not only meant to deal with
criminal activity but the overall quality of life in communities
and neighborhoods. The resources involved in community
policing in partnership with the police involve the community
residents, social service organizations, and other government
organizations. One of the most important goals of community
policing is to shape the public’s perception of the police by
providing problem solving to the communities they serve, both
in and out of the criminal justice system.
2. Search your local or regional news web page and locate a
current event involving law enforcement officers, summarize
the article or post, and discuss your perception of the police
officers' actions. What contributed to your perception? Please
consider the media's role in the event, the leadership of the
department's role, and the community's role.
After searching our local area news the current event that I
chose to discuss for class that involved law enforcement officer
was a domestic violence call that led to a police officer shooting
and an injuring a suspect who was reportedly strangling a
woman inside a car on the 4th of August 2019.
The Juneau Police were called to the Safeway parking lot
Saturday morning around 9:10 a.m. after reports of a physical
dispute. An ambulance was also called to the scene.
When officers arrived, they found the 29-year-old suspect inside
the vehicle. An investigation revealed the man was preventing
the woman from leaving the vehicle. Police say the suspect had
the woman in a "choke hold." The suspect didn't comply with
verbal commands, and resisted when officers attempted to take
him out of the vehicle. A struggle ensued and the man armed
himself with a knife, according to police. That's when on officer
shot the man twice.
The man was taken by ambulance to the Bartlett Regional
Hospital and later flown to Seattle via medevac. The woman
was also taken to the hospital for medical attention.
According to the Juneau Police Department, the responding
officers have been placed on administrative leave, per policy.
My perception of the police officers actions during this incident
is that they both did the job that swore to, the day they
graduated from the academy. They kept the women safe and
prevented anyone else from getting hurt. Domestic violence is
always an unpredictable situation. Both of the officers involved
are very well respected and did what they were trained to do in
a situation like the one they were in. We sometimes forget how
hard of a job law enforcement officers have and I think in this
event they both made the right choices to protect the victim and
to control the situation by apprehend the criminal, as best they
could.
As for the media's role in this situation, they were quick to
report the incident and gathered the facts that did not portray
the officers in a negative light. Juneau is a small community
compared to larger capital cities where word of mouth can
travel quickly which ensures the media will have to report the
events accurately considering any possible details missed will
surface via word of mouth.
