ABSTRACT
It's far from finished, but the Developer Preview edition of Windows 10 is already
packed with important additions, from the colorful Metro interface, to a revamped Explorer,
appealing desktop applets, useful system repair options, and more. In places, though,
Windows 10 is also very different to what's gone before. So if you've installed the new
Windows 8build, perhaps on a virtual machine but found yourself a little lost, don't worry -
read our Windows 10 tips and tricks and you'll soon be back on track, and taking a close-up
view at some of the best features Windows 10 has to offer.

1. INTRODUCTION
Windows 10 is a personal computer operating system released by Microsoft as part of
the Windows NT family of operating systems. It was officially unveiled in September 2014
following a brief demo at Build 2014. The first version of the operating system entered a
public beta testing process in October 2014, leading up to its consumer release on July 29,
2015, and its release to volume licensing on August 1, 2015. To encourage the adoption of
Windows 10, Microsoft announced that during its first year of availability, the operating
system would be made available free of charge to users of genuine copies of eligible editions
of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
Windows 10 introduces what Microsoft described as a "universal" application
architecture; expanding on Metro-style apps, these apps can be designed to run across
multiple Microsoft product families with nearly identical code including PCs, tablets,
smartphones, embedded systems, Xbox One, Surface Hub and HoloLens. The Windows user
interface was revised to handle transitions between a mouse-oriented interface and a
touchscreen-optimized interface based on available input devices particularly on 2-in-1 PCs;
both interfaces include an updated Start menu that blends elements of Windows 7's traditional
Start menu with the tiles of Windows 8. The first release of Windows 10 also introduces a
virtual desktop system, a window and desktop management feature called Task View, the
Microsoft Edge web browser, support for fingerprint and face recognition login, new security
features for enterprise environments, and DirectX 12 and WDDM 2.0 to improve the
operating system's graphics capabilities for games.
Microsoft described Windows 10 as an 'operating system as a service' that would
receive ongoing updates to its features and functionality, augmented with the ability for
enterprise environments to receive non-critical updates at a slower pace, or use long-term
support milestones that will only receive critical updates, such as security patches, over their
five-year lifespan of mainstream support. Terry Myerson, executive vice president of
Microsoft's Windows and Devices Group, argued that the goal of this model was to reduce
fragmentation across the Windows platform, as Microsoft aimed to have Windows 10
installed on at least one billion devices in the two to three years following its release.

2. HISTORY
v 1975–1981: Microsoft boots up
v In 1975, Gates and Allen form a partnership called Microsoft.
v In June 1980, Gates and Allen hire Gates’ former Harvard classmate Steve Ballmer to
help run the company.
v Microsoft focuses on a new operating system—the software that manages, or runs, the
computer hardware and also serves to bridge the gap between the computer hardware
and programs, such as a word processor.
v It’s the foundation on which computer programs can run. They name their new
operating system "MS-DOS.“
v Later it developed WINDOWS- XP, 7, 8,8.1 Versions of operating systems.
v Windows 10 will keep personal and corporate data separate.
Announcement
Threshold was officially unveiled during a media event on September 30, 2014, under
the name Windows 10; Myerson said that Windows 10 would be Microsoft's "most
comprehensive platform ever", providing a single, unified platform for desktop computers,
laptops, tablets, smartphones, and all-in-one devices. He emphasized that Windows 10 would
take steps towards restoring user interface mechanics from Windows 7 to improve the
experience for users on non-touch devices, noting criticism of Windows 8's touch-oriented
interface by keyboard and mouse users.Despite these concessions, Myerson noted that the
touch-oriented interface would evolve as well on 10. In describing the changes, Joe Belfiore
likened the two operating systems to electric cars, comparing Windows 7 to a first-generation
Toyota Prius hybrid, and Windows 10 to an all-electric Tesla—considering the latter to be an
extension of the technology first introduced in the former.
3
Microsoft has not clarified the reasoning for naming the new operating system
Windows 10 instead of Windows 9; however, Terry Myerson has stated that "based on the
product that's coming, and just how different our approach will be overall, it wouldn't be right
to call it Windows 9." He also joked that they could not call it "Windows One" (alluding to
several recent Microsoft products with a similar brand, such as OneNote, Xbox One and
OneDrive) because they had already made a Windows 1.
Further details surrounding Windows 10's consumer-oriented features were presented
during another media event held on January 21, 2015, entitled "Windows 10: The Next
Chapter". The keynote featured the unveiling of Cortana integration within the operating
system, new Xbox-oriented features, Windows 10 for phones and small tablets, an updated
Office Mobile suite, Surface Hub—a large-screened Windows 10 device for enterprise
collaboration based upon Perceptive Pixel technology,[23] along with HoloLens‑augmented
reality eyewear and an associated platform for building apps that can render holograms
through HoloLens.
Release
On June 1, 2015, Microsoft first announced that Windows 10 would be released on
July 29, 2015. Microsoft began an advertising campaign centring around Windows 10,
"Upgrade Your World", on July 20, 2015 with the premiere of television commercials in
Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The
commercials focused on the tagline "A more human way to do", emphasizing new features
and technologies supported by Windows 10 that sought to provide a more "personal"
experience to users. The campaign culminated with launch events in thirteen cities on July 29,
which celebrated "the unprecedented role our biggest fans played in the development of
Windows 10".

3. FEATURES
Fig 1.windows 10
Beyond the business-related features Microsoft touted in its Windows 10 naming
announcement session in San Francisco (read about those HERE), there are some distinct
new ways Windows 10 functions. The new features are not necessarily new features, but
instead expanded or enhanced versions of things that have been available before.
Once the Preview site goes live tomorrow, you'll be able to sign up to participate and
test these enhanced features. If you're willing to install software that is, admittedly, half-
baked, here's what you can expect to see…
Start Menu
Yep…it's back. But, this time it allows you to store and organize apps with Live Tiles.
Fig 2.start menu slide

Windowed Everything
Who cares what it is – Metro (Windows Store) or legacy apps – you can run it in a
fully customizable, resizable window.
Fig 3.windowed everything
Snap Improvements
This always seemed very limiting to me. Based on the screen size and resolution, you
were limited to how many apps you could split across the screen. I mean, c'mon, it's called
"Windows" after all. In Windows 10 you can now snap four apps at the same time.
Fig 4.snap improvements

Task View Button
Ctrl-Tab gets its own app! Anyone who's used Windows for any length of time knows
about the Ctrl-Tab key sequence that allows you to quickly switch between running
applications. Windows 10 introduces a new Task View button to make that function available
to mouse and touch. Additionally, if you use the Windows 10 Multiple Desktops feature
(mentioned next), running desktops will also be included in the task list.
Fig 5.task view button
Multiple (or virtual) Desktops
This new feature allows you to create separate "Desktops" that run side-by-side. This
feature gives you the ability to organize tasks and apps by project or function. This feature
was actually available as a SysInternals utility and has now been enhanced and integrated into
Windows 10.

Fig 6.multiple desktops
A Better File Explorer
File Explorer has definitely seen improvements over time. Those that chose to skip
Windows 8 really missed some great updates. However, Windows 10 adds a couple new
features that should improve it even more. To start, in the technical preview, Windows 10
will add a recent files and frequently visited folders list to make accessing them quicker and
easier. Truth told, this will be a very valuable feature and shouldn't be understated. Thinking
about my computing experience, there are only a few folders that I access regularly.
Pin Your Favorite Apps :
∑ Pin apps, programs and folders to the Start menu for fast access to the things you use
the most. Apps with Live Tiles will show updates for the people and things that
matter.
∑ Click Start, select All Apps, right-click the app you want to pin, and then select Pin to
Start.
∑ Once pinned, your app will show up as a tile on the right. Right-click the tile to
change its size. Drag and drop to move it around. Don’t worry about running out of
space — the Start menu will automatically resizFull.
8
Full Start Screen:
∑ If you prefer the larger Start screen from Windows 8, you have the option to replace
thStart menu in Tech Preview
∑ Before you start, be sure to save your work. You’ll need to sign out of Windows to
complete this change.
∑ Click Start, type navigation properties, and then select it from the search results.
∑ Click the Start menu tab, clear the Use the Start menu instead of the Start screen
check box, and then click OK.
∑ In the prompt, click Sign out and change settings.
∑ Your device will restart. Sign in again, and then click Start to open the full Start
screen.
Cortana Can get it done:
Cortana, your personal assistant, is right on your desktop. Ask her to set up a meeting
or send an email to a friend. She can even find your files for you and tell you jokes. Select the
search box and type what you want Cortana to do, or just select the microphone to talk with
her instead.
9
4. WHAT’S NEW IN WINDOWS 10?
Start Menu Returns
Fig 7. Start Menu Returns
It’s what Windows 8 detractors have been clamoring for, and Microsoft has finally
brought back the Start Menu. Now, when you click on the Start button at the bottom left of
the screen, you get two panels side by side, with the left column showing pinned, recently
and most-used apps. You also get a power button at the top for options such as Hibernate,
Standby and Shutdown, and an all apps option a la Windows 8. The right column features a
selection of live tiles that you can customize, resize and reorganize. Not only that, but the
search field at the bottom will look up related Internet results in addition to programs and
files (as it did on Windows 7). Even better, you can have the Start Menu expand to full
screen whenever you want, eliminating the need for a Modern UI Start Screen.
One Windows for all devices
Fig 8. One Windows for all devices
10
Microsoft is using Windows 10 to attempt to unify its various software platforms
across different devices under one Windows brand and software. Microsoft has talked a lot
about Windows being more than simply desktop computer software. Windows 10 is meant to
unify desktop PCs, Windows tablets and Windows Phone smartphones with one interface,
one way of operating and one account. Apple has taken a similar route with its iCloud
accounts and the upcomingContinuity feature between iPads, iPhones and Mac computers –
although its iOS software on the iPhone and OS X on the desktop have been kept separate.
Cortana
Fig 9 Cortana
Being lazy just got a lot easier. Windows 10 will bring Microsoft’s voice-controlled
digital assistant Cortana, to make it easier for you to interact with your device without lifting
a finger. We will be able to search your hard drive for specific files, pull up photos from
specific dates, or launch PowerPoint presentations just by telling your PC to do so. You can
even get Cortana to send an email while you’re working on a spreadsheet, making multi-
tasking much easier.
11
Xbox App
Fig 10. Xbox App
You will soon be able to play any Xbox One game on your PC or tablet, with
the Xbox app for Windows 10. The new operating system will support Xbox game streaming
(through your home network), with improved speed and graphics performance thanks to
DirectX 12 support. The app also lets you record, edit and share your fragging victories with
the Game DVR feature, which lets you grab the previous 30 seconds of your game so you
don’t miss unexpected wins. You’ll also be able to join your friends in games across
Windows 10 or the Xbox platforms, and see your friends’ activity via Xbox Live.
Project Spartan Browser
Fig 11 Project Spartan Browser
12
Forget Internet Explorer. The long-derided browser will be replaced by the newly
announced Project Spartan. New features include PDF support, a reading mode that improves
the layout of long articles, and a new note taking feature. The latter lets you scribble on any
page and share your comments with your friends through social networks via a slide-in menu
so you won’t have to leave the browser. Better yet, Project Spartan will feature Cortana
support within the browser, so she can pull contextual information from the sites you’re on to
do things like navigate to a restaurant you’re looking up or pull up an upcoming flight time
without having to go into your email.
Improved Multitasking
Fig 12 Improved Multitasking
A new Multiple Desktops feature lets you run another set of windows as if on another
screen, but without the physical monitor. This is similar to Apple’s Spaces feature on OS X,
and helps you manage your multitude of open windows and apps. Instead of having multiple
windows open on top of each other on one desktop, you can set up a whole other virtual
desktop for those programs to reside in. Set up one specifically for home and leave your apps
such as Netflix and Amazon open, and create another desktop for work on which you keep
Word, Excel and Internet Explorer open.
13
With the new desktops comes a new way to keep track of your open apps on
Windows 10. On the new operating system, you can either hit the new Task View button on
the task bar or swipe in from the left edge of the screen to pull up a one-page view of all your
open apps and files. It’s not much different from using the Alt-Tab combination shortcut on
your keyboard, but this presents a convenient way for touch-oriented users to get an overview
of what’s running.
Snap assist
Fig 13 Snap assist
The window Snap feature has been enhanced to size windows for better multi-window
productivity. The snapping feature, which automatically resizes windows on the desktop to
fill part or all of the screen, has been enhanced, allowing tiling of windows, snapping side-by-
side and an array of new layouts to including virtual multi-desktop modes to try to help
computer and tablet users be more productive with both universal apps and traditional
desktop Windows apps.
Microsoft also updated its Snap View multitasking feature to let you dock windows to
the four corners of your screen. While you could split your display between apps before, the
number of programs you could have side-by-side was limited by your device’s screen
resolution. The system will even suggest what other open apps you can use to fill up available
space, a feature called Snap Assist.
14
Universal apps can be windowed
Fig 14 Universal apps can be windowed
New Windows Store apps, which previously only operated in full-screen mode, can
now be used in traditional windows on the desktop. Bringing back the start menu has given
the traditional Windows desktop more prominence again. To help merge the Windows 8-style
“modern” apps from the Windows Store with the traditional desktop, Windows 10 can now
run the newly renamed “universal apps” in windows on the desktop, as though they
Action Center
Fig 15 Action Center
Windows 10 will provide a new way to look at all your notifications in one place. The
Action Center appears to replace the Charms menu that slides in from the right on Windows 8
devices. It collects alerts from your device from all your apps, similar to the notifications
drawers in iOS and Android. Depending on the app, you can also respond or react from this
15
panel itself, with each notification expanding to show more actions. The Action Center also
offers a quick way to toggle connectivity options and other settings such as display brightness
and contrast.
Continuum
Fig 16 Continuum
With the rise of hybrid laptop-tablet devices, Microsoft wants to make it easier to
switch between either mode. The system will detect if you’ve plugged in a keyboard or
mouse and switch modes for more convenient interaction. If you remove the
keyboard/mouse, a notification will pop up from the task bar at the bottom, asking if you
want to activate Tablet mode. When you do, you are greeted with the more touch-friendly
profile. Dock your tablet into the keyboard again, and you’ll receive the same prompt, this
time asking if you want to exit Tablet mode.
16
5. DEVELOPMENT
At the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in 2011, Andrew Lees, the chief of
Microsoft's mobile technologies, stated that the company intended to have a single ecosystem
for PCs, phones, tablets, and other devices. "We won’t have an ecosystem for PCs, and one
for phones, and one for tablets—they’ll all come together.".
In December 2013, technology writer Mary Jo Foley reported that Microsoft was
working on an update to Windows 8 codenamed Threshold, after a planet in Microsoft's Halo
video game franchise.Similarly to "Blue" (which became Windows 8.1), Foley called
Threshold a "wave of operating systems" across multiple Microsoft platforms and services,
scheduled for the second quarter of 2015. Foley reported that among the goals for Threshold
was to create a unified application platform and development toolkit for Windows, Windows
Phone and Xbox One (which all use a similar Windows NT kernel).
In April 2014, at the Build Conference, Microsoft's Terry Myerson unveiled an
updated version of Windows 8.1 that added the ability to run Windows Store apps inside
desktop windows and a more traditional Start menu in place of the Start screen seen in
Windows 8. The new Start menu takes after Windows 7's design by using only a portion of
the screen and including a Windows 7-style application listing in the first column. The
second column displays Windows 8-style app tiles. Myerson stated that these changes would
occur in a future update, but did not elaborate.Microsoft also unveiled the concept of a
"universal Windows app", allowing Windows Store apps created for Windows 8.1 to be
ported to Windows Phone 8.1 and Xbox One while sharing a common codebase, with an
interface designed for different device form factors, and allowing user data and licenses for
an app to be shared between multiple platforms. Windows Phone 8.1 would share nearly 90%
of the common Windows Runtime APIs with Windows 8.1 on PCs.
Screenshots of a Windows build which purported to be Threshold were leaked in July
2014, showing the previously presented Start menu and windowed Windows Store apps
followed by a further screenshot in September 2014 of a build identifying itself as "Windows
Technical Preview", numbered 9834, showing a new virtual desktop system, a notification
center, and a new File Explorer icon.

v Microsoft Edge – Web Browser
v Movies &Tv – To play videos.
v Phone Companion - The Phone Companion app walks you through configuring your
smartphone ortablet —Windows,Android, iPhone, or iPad — to work with Windows
10. It’s really designed to encourage you to install Microsoft’s various apps so the
services you may be using on your PC will also be available on your phone. For
example, telling the app you have an Android phone or iPhone suggests you install
One Drive, Skype, OneNote, Outlook, and the Microsoft Office for Android
applications.
18

10. CONCLUSION
∑ Two step process for performing a clean install and activation compliance check and
32 to 64 bit migrations.
∑ Recovery Drive can only perform clean installs, no repair upgrades (work around
download ISO).
∑ Task View does not support different wallpaper and customization options for
Windows 10.
∑ Action Center limited options for notifications – i.e. can’t respond to a tweet on the
fly.
∑ Mandatory Automatic Updates gives users less control over managing updates they
might not want or can cause potential damage.
∑ Microsoft Edge lacking Thumbnail Previews when multiple tabs are open, no jump
list support, no direct support for importing Bookmarks from popular third party
browsers such as Chrome, Firefox.
∑ No extension model in Edge, some sites will still need to depend on Internet Explorer.
∑ Some functions have been moved around that will require familiarization i.e. – show
desktop icons, change screen saver.
∑ Number of Control Panel items have not been modernized, I guess this will be an on-
going thing.
∑ Network Flyout does not support setting connection as a Metered Connection.
∑ No means of taking advantage of built hardware such as my fingerprint reader even
though it is installed and working in Device Manager.
∑ Newer technologies such as Windows Hello will require new hardware.
∑ Older 64 bit CPUs that are still powerful are left behind if they do not support certain
processor extensions.

  • 4. ABSTRACT It's far from finished, but the Developer Preview edition of Windows 10 is already packed with important additions, from the colorful Metro interface, to a revamped Explorer, appealing desktop applets, useful system repair options, and more. In places, though, Windows 10 is also very different to what's gone before. So if you've installed the new Windows 8build, perhaps on a virtual machine but found yourself a little lost, don't worry - read our Windows 10 tips and tricks and you'll soon be back on track, and taking a close-up view at some of the best features Windows 10 has to offer.
  • 5. 1 1. INTRODUCTION Windows 10 is a personal computer operating system released by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It was officially unveiled in September 2014 following a brief demo at Build 2014. The first version of the operating system entered a public beta testing process in October 2014, leading up to its consumer release on July 29, 2015, and its release to volume licensing on August 1, 2015. To encourage the adoption of Windows 10, Microsoft announced that during its first year of availability, the operating system would be made available free of charge to users of genuine copies of eligible editions of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Windows 10 introduces what Microsoft described as a "universal" application architecture; expanding on Metro-style apps, these apps can be designed to run across multiple Microsoft product families with nearly identical code including PCs, tablets, smartphones, embedded systems, Xbox One, Surface Hub and HoloLens. The Windows user interface was revised to handle transitions between a mouse-oriented interface and a touchscreen-optimized interface based on available input devices particularly on 2-in-1 PCs; both interfaces include an updated Start menu that blends elements of Windows 7's traditional Start menu with the tiles of Windows 8. The first release of Windows 10 also introduces a virtual desktop system, a window and desktop management feature called Task View, the Microsoft Edge web browser, support for fingerprint and face recognition login, new security features for enterprise environments, and DirectX 12 and WDDM 2.0 to improve the operating system's graphics capabilities for games. Microsoft described Windows 10 as an 'operating system as a service' that would receive ongoing updates to its features and functionality, augmented with the ability for enterprise environments to receive non-critical updates at a slower pace, or use long-term support milestones that will only receive critical updates, such as security patches, over their five-year lifespan of mainstream support. Terry Myerson, executive vice president of Microsoft's Windows and Devices Group, argued that the goal of this model was to reduce fragmentation across the Windows platform, as Microsoft aimed to have Windows 10 installed on at least one billion devices in the two to three years following its release.
  • 6. 2 2. HISTORY v 1975–1981: Microsoft boots up v In 1975, Gates and Allen form a partnership called Microsoft. v In June 1980, Gates and Allen hire Gates’ former Harvard classmate Steve Ballmer to help run the company. v Microsoft focuses on a new operating system—the software that manages, or runs, the computer hardware and also serves to bridge the gap between the computer hardware and programs, such as a word processor. v It’s the foundation on which computer programs can run. They name their new operating system "MS-DOS.“ v Later it developed WINDOWS- XP, 7, 8,8.1 Versions of operating systems. v Windows 10 will keep personal and corporate data separate. Announcement Threshold was officially unveiled during a media event on September 30, 2014, under the name Windows 10; Myerson said that Windows 10 would be Microsoft's "most comprehensive platform ever", providing a single, unified platform for desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and all-in-one devices. He emphasized that Windows 10 would take steps towards restoring user interface mechanics from Windows 7 to improve the experience for users on non-touch devices, noting criticism of Windows 8's touch-oriented interface by keyboard and mouse users.Despite these concessions, Myerson noted that the touch-oriented interface would evolve as well on 10. In describing the changes, Joe Belfiore likened the two operating systems to electric cars, comparing Windows 7 to a first-generation Toyota Prius hybrid, and Windows 10 to an all-electric Tesla—considering the latter to be an extension of the technology first introduced in the former.
  • 7. 3 Microsoft has not clarified the reasoning for naming the new operating system Windows 10 instead of Windows 9; however, Terry Myerson has stated that "based on the product that's coming, and just how different our approach will be overall, it wouldn't be right to call it Windows 9." He also joked that they could not call it "Windows One" (alluding to several recent Microsoft products with a similar brand, such as OneNote, Xbox One and OneDrive) because they had already made a Windows 1. Further details surrounding Windows 10's consumer-oriented features were presented during another media event held on January 21, 2015, entitled "Windows 10: The Next Chapter". The keynote featured the unveiling of Cortana integration within the operating system, new Xbox-oriented features, Windows 10 for phones and small tablets, an updated Office Mobile suite, Surface Hub—a large-screened Windows 10 device for enterprise collaboration based upon Perceptive Pixel technology,[23] along with HoloLens‑augmented reality eyewear and an associated platform for building apps that can render holograms through HoloLens. Release On June 1, 2015, Microsoft first announced that Windows 10 would be released on July 29, 2015. Microsoft began an advertising campaign centring around Windows 10, "Upgrade Your World", on July 20, 2015 with the premiere of television commercials in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The commercials focused on the tagline "A more human way to do", emphasizing new features and technologies supported by Windows 10 that sought to provide a more "personal" experience to users. The campaign culminated with launch events in thirteen cities on July 29, which celebrated "the unprecedented role our biggest fans played in the development of Windows 10".
  • 8. 4 3. FEATURES Fig 1.windows 10 Beyond the business-related features Microsoft touted in its Windows 10 naming announcement session in San Francisco (read about those HERE), there are some distinct new ways Windows 10 functions. The new features are not necessarily new features, but instead expanded or enhanced versions of things that have been available before. Once the Preview site goes live tomorrow, you'll be able to sign up to participate and test these enhanced features. If you're willing to install software that is, admittedly, half- baked, here's what you can expect to see… Start Menu Yep…it's back. But, this time it allows you to store and organize apps with Live Tiles. Fig 2.start menu slide
  • 9. 5 Windowed Everything Who cares what it is – Metro (Windows Store) or legacy apps – you can run it in a fully customizable, resizable window. Fig 3.windowed everything Snap Improvements This always seemed very limiting to me. Based on the screen size and resolution, you were limited to how many apps you could split across the screen. I mean, c'mon, it's called "Windows" after all. In Windows 10 you can now snap four apps at the same time. Fig 4.snap improvements
  • 10. 6 Task View Button Ctrl-Tab gets its own app! Anyone who's used Windows for any length of time knows about the Ctrl-Tab key sequence that allows you to quickly switch between running applications. Windows 10 introduces a new Task View button to make that function available to mouse and touch. Additionally, if you use the Windows 10 Multiple Desktops feature (mentioned next), running desktops will also be included in the task list. Fig 5.task view button Multiple (or virtual) Desktops This new feature allows you to create separate "Desktops" that run side-by-side. This feature gives you the ability to organize tasks and apps by project or function. This feature was actually available as a SysInternals utility and has now been enhanced and integrated into Windows 10.
  • 11. 7 Fig 6.multiple desktops A Better File Explorer File Explorer has definitely seen improvements over time. Those that chose to skip Windows 8 really missed some great updates. However, Windows 10 adds a couple new features that should improve it even more. To start, in the technical preview, Windows 10 will add a recent files and frequently visited folders list to make accessing them quicker and easier. Truth told, this will be a very valuable feature and shouldn't be understated. Thinking about my computing experience, there are only a few folders that I access regularly. Pin Your Favorite Apps : ∑ Pin apps, programs and folders to the Start menu for fast access to the things you use the most. Apps with Live Tiles will show updates for the people and things that matter. ∑ Click Start, select All Apps, right-click the app you want to pin, and then select Pin to Start. ∑ Once pinned, your app will show up as a tile on the right. Right-click the tile to change its size. Drag and drop to move it around. Don’t worry about running out of space — the Start menu will automatically resizFull.
  • 12. 8 Full Start Screen: ∑ If you prefer the larger Start screen from Windows 8, you have the option to replace thStart menu in Tech Preview ∑ Before you start, be sure to save your work. You’ll need to sign out of Windows to complete this change. ∑ Click Start, type navigation properties, and then select it from the search results. ∑ Click the Start menu tab, clear the Use the Start menu instead of the Start screen check box, and then click OK. ∑ In the prompt, click Sign out and change settings. ∑ Your device will restart. Sign in again, and then click Start to open the full Start screen. Cortana Can get it done: Cortana, your personal assistant, is right on your desktop. Ask her to set up a meeting or send an email to a friend. She can even find your files for you and tell you jokes. Select the search box and type what you want Cortana to do, or just select the microphone to talk with her instead.
  • 13. 9 4. WHAT’S NEW IN WINDOWS 10? Start Menu Returns Fig 7. Start Menu Returns It’s what Windows 8 detractors have been clamoring for, and Microsoft has finally brought back the Start Menu. Now, when you click on the Start button at the bottom left of the screen, you get two panels side by side, with the left column showing pinned, recently and most-used apps. You also get a power button at the top for options such as Hibernate, Standby and Shutdown, and an all apps option a la Windows 8. The right column features a selection of live tiles that you can customize, resize and reorganize. Not only that, but the search field at the bottom will look up related Internet results in addition to programs and files (as it did on Windows 7). Even better, you can have the Start Menu expand to full screen whenever you want, eliminating the need for a Modern UI Start Screen. One Windows for all devices Fig 8. One Windows for all devices
  • 14. 10 Microsoft is using Windows 10 to attempt to unify its various software platforms across different devices under one Windows brand and software. Microsoft has talked a lot about Windows being more than simply desktop computer software. Windows 10 is meant to unify desktop PCs, Windows tablets and Windows Phone smartphones with one interface, one way of operating and one account. Apple has taken a similar route with its iCloud accounts and the upcomingContinuity feature between iPads, iPhones and Mac computers – although its iOS software on the iPhone and OS X on the desktop have been kept separate. Cortana Fig 9 Cortana Being lazy just got a lot easier. Windows 10 will bring Microsoft’s voice-controlled digital assistant Cortana, to make it easier for you to interact with your device without lifting a finger. We will be able to search your hard drive for specific files, pull up photos from specific dates, or launch PowerPoint presentations just by telling your PC to do so. You can even get Cortana to send an email while you’re working on a spreadsheet, making multi- tasking much easier.
  • 15. 11 Xbox App Fig 10. Xbox App You will soon be able to play any Xbox One game on your PC or tablet, with the Xbox app for Windows 10. The new operating system will support Xbox game streaming (through your home network), with improved speed and graphics performance thanks to DirectX 12 support. The app also lets you record, edit and share your fragging victories with the Game DVR feature, which lets you grab the previous 30 seconds of your game so you don’t miss unexpected wins. You’ll also be able to join your friends in games across Windows 10 or the Xbox platforms, and see your friends’ activity via Xbox Live. Project Spartan Browser Fig 11 Project Spartan Browser
  • 16. 12 Forget Internet Explorer. The long-derided browser will be replaced by the newly announced Project Spartan. New features include PDF support, a reading mode that improves the layout of long articles, and a new note taking feature. The latter lets you scribble on any page and share your comments with your friends through social networks via a slide-in menu so you won’t have to leave the browser. Better yet, Project Spartan will feature Cortana support within the browser, so she can pull contextual information from the sites you’re on to do things like navigate to a restaurant you’re looking up or pull up an upcoming flight time without having to go into your email. Improved Multitasking Fig 12 Improved Multitasking A new Multiple Desktops feature lets you run another set of windows as if on another screen, but without the physical monitor. This is similar to Apple’s Spaces feature on OS X, and helps you manage your multitude of open windows and apps. Instead of having multiple windows open on top of each other on one desktop, you can set up a whole other virtual desktop for those programs to reside in. Set up one specifically for home and leave your apps such as Netflix and Amazon open, and create another desktop for work on which you keep Word, Excel and Internet Explorer open.
  • 17. 13 With the new desktops comes a new way to keep track of your open apps on Windows 10. On the new operating system, you can either hit the new Task View button on the task bar or swipe in from the left edge of the screen to pull up a one-page view of all your open apps and files. It’s not much different from using the Alt-Tab combination shortcut on your keyboard, but this presents a convenient way for touch-oriented users to get an overview of what’s running. Snap assist Fig 13 Snap assist The window Snap feature has been enhanced to size windows for better multi-window productivity. The snapping feature, which automatically resizes windows on the desktop to fill part or all of the screen, has been enhanced, allowing tiling of windows, snapping side-by- side and an array of new layouts to including virtual multi-desktop modes to try to help computer and tablet users be more productive with both universal apps and traditional desktop Windows apps. Microsoft also updated its Snap View multitasking feature to let you dock windows to the four corners of your screen. While you could split your display between apps before, the number of programs you could have side-by-side was limited by your device’s screen resolution. The system will even suggest what other open apps you can use to fill up available space, a feature called Snap Assist.
  • 18. 14 Universal apps can be windowed Fig 14 Universal apps can be windowed New Windows Store apps, which previously only operated in full-screen mode, can now be used in traditional windows on the desktop. Bringing back the start menu has given the traditional Windows desktop more prominence again. To help merge the Windows 8-style “modern” apps from the Windows Store with the traditional desktop, Windows 10 can now run the newly renamed “universal apps” in windows on the desktop, as though they Action Center Fig 15 Action Center Windows 10 will provide a new way to look at all your notifications in one place. The Action Center appears to replace the Charms menu that slides in from the right on Windows 8 devices. It collects alerts from your device from all your apps, similar to the notifications drawers in iOS and Android. Depending on the app, you can also respond or react from this
  • 19. 15 panel itself, with each notification expanding to show more actions. The Action Center also offers a quick way to toggle connectivity options and other settings such as display brightness and contrast. Continuum Fig 16 Continuum With the rise of hybrid laptop-tablet devices, Microsoft wants to make it easier to switch between either mode. The system will detect if you’ve plugged in a keyboard or mouse and switch modes for more convenient interaction. If you remove the keyboard/mouse, a notification will pop up from the task bar at the bottom, asking if you want to activate Tablet mode. When you do, you are greeted with the more touch-friendly profile. Dock your tablet into the keyboard again, and you’ll receive the same prompt, this time asking if you want to exit Tablet mode.
  • 20. 16 5. DEVELOPMENT At the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in 2011, Andrew Lees, the chief of Microsoft's mobile technologies, stated that the company intended to have a single ecosystem for PCs, phones, tablets, and other devices. "We won’t have an ecosystem for PCs, and one for phones, and one for tablets—they’ll all come together.". In December 2013, technology writer Mary Jo Foley reported that Microsoft was working on an update to Windows 8 codenamed Threshold, after a planet in Microsoft's Halo video game franchise.Similarly to "Blue" (which became Windows 8.1), Foley called Threshold a "wave of operating systems" across multiple Microsoft platforms and services, scheduled for the second quarter of 2015. Foley reported that among the goals for Threshold was to create a unified application platform and development toolkit for Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One (which all use a similar Windows NT kernel). In April 2014, at the Build Conference, Microsoft's Terry Myerson unveiled an updated version of Windows 8.1 that added the ability to run Windows Store apps inside desktop windows and a more traditional Start menu in place of the Start screen seen in Windows 8. The new Start menu takes after Windows 7's design by using only a portion of the screen and including a Windows 7-style application listing in the first column. The second column displays Windows 8-style app tiles. Myerson stated that these changes would occur in a future update, but did not elaborate.Microsoft also unveiled the concept of a "universal Windows app", allowing Windows Store apps created for Windows 8.1 to be ported to Windows Phone 8.1 and Xbox One while sharing a common codebase, with an interface designed for different device form factors, and allowing user data and licenses for an app to be shared between multiple platforms. Windows Phone 8.1 would share nearly 90% of the common Windows Runtime APIs with Windows 8.1 on PCs. Screenshots of a Windows build which purported to be Threshold were leaked in July 2014, showing the previously presented Start menu and windowed Windows Store apps followed by a further screenshot in September 2014 of a build identifying itself as "Windows Technical Preview", numbered 9834, showing a new virtual desktop system, a notification center, and a new File Explorer icon.

  • 25. 21 10. CONCLUSION ∑ Two step process for performing a clean install and activation compliance check and 32 to 64 bit migrations. ∑ Recovery Drive can only perform clean installs, no repair upgrades (work around download ISO). ∑ Task View does not support different wallpaper and customization options for Windows 10. ∑ Action Center limited options for notifications – i.e. can’t respond to a tweet on the fly. ∑ Mandatory Automatic Updates gives users less control over managing updates they might not want or can cause potential damage. ∑ Microsoft Edge lacking Thumbnail Previews when multiple tabs are open, no jump list support, no direct support for importing Bookmarks from popular third party browsers such as Chrome, Firefox. ∑ No extension model in Edge, some sites will still need to depend on Internet Explorer. ∑ Some functions have been moved around that will require familiarization i.e. – show desktop icons, change screen saver. ∑ Number of Control Panel items have not been modernized, I guess this will be an on- going thing. ∑ Network Flyout does not support setting connection as a Metered Connection. ∑ No means of taking advantage of built hardware such as my fingerprint reader even though it is installed and working in Device Manager. ∑ Newer technologies such as Windows Hello will require new hardware. ∑ Older 64 bit CPUs that are still powerful are left behind if they do not support certain processor extensions.
